I'm a female to clarify, and I enjoy otaku culture but not to sickly neet-husbando degree. I enjoy exchanging little stories both in writing and through illustrations. I do so with friends, but I'd really like to find a partner to share the same interests, but on a deeper scale. Two artists don't work. Trust me, I've tried. We're too flaky. The best date for an artist is a non-artist, but one who understands the struggle, like a writer, or musician, or actress.
The women I've gotten along with best were either aspiring writers, or accountant types, who were interested in running my office for me. Dating other artists were just complete failures with a shit ton of competition where nothing got done because we were both drilled down into our work.

otakr nowadays is used in japan as a term to refer to any passionate hobbyist, though. so you could also be a baseball otaku or a motorsports otaku. (i think the closest term would be nerd/ geek. otaku can, much like nerd, still be used in an offensive manner, but it lost its harshness as an insult)

in the west, however, otaku is commonly used to describe fans of japanese media and culture. it was popuralized by anime and manga enthusiasts and is rarely used outside of the respective context. since a lot of anime fans refer to themself as otakus; it's fair to say that the term itself is used as a way of presenting ones identity as a fan, and thus connect with other people that share your interests.
