oh it's back, great.

How do you recognize a displaced inbetween from a keyframe? I want to start practicing animation by trying to recreate other people's works but I get confused when trying to identify these two things.
And any advice on what I could do with this gif before I commit to animating it in 1's would be great. I want to keep it relatively simple so only certain parts are moving. I've posted around on other places and so far the only advice I got was

>don't ask me, I don't know how to animate.

thanks.

youre doing the opposite of a simple animation. when animating you dont jump to inbetweening. get your keys down first. also animating in parts is not ideal.

>>3427765
Okay, don't animate in parts, i guess that would look wonky. But sometimes I just wanna see what something looks like when it moves, so I just go ahead and try to do it. Like with my cat girl image, it started out as a illustration but then I decided that I actually wanted it to move a bit. So I tried to make my own version of this attached gif. I thought it would be relatively easier because she stays in one position.

I didn't have another illustration drawn out, of a different angle, so it's not like I could of used that as a keyframe and figured out how to add volume with displaced inbetweens.
I actually have a monkey on my back that wants to see what this would look like in at least 2's or 3's. And I also wanted to try cellshading the animation. I figured the only loss I could take is whatever time I spend experimenting, so there's no reason not to do it, imo.

Really? I got Richard Williams "The Animator's Survival Kit" from one of these animation threads. And you've never heard of a displaced inbetween? When talking about the difference of inbetweening forms rather than lines, he talks about how lazy inbvetweeners will just do the lines. Its in ASK04.
Wait a minute...Where is the download link in this thread?

The head circle is bound to the colour white so it would just pan into the head. The body could be rigged to have parts that go 360 degrees up and down with redraw (usually you just don't do this as that's a very rare occurrence). But You would move the body part up as its doing the backfrlip and moving the legs over body and making them large and redrawing to account for angle (with everything pivoting around the head circel).

Anon's trick works fine, and it's the one I've used for full scenes and complex stuff, however I was shown a technique recently by a friend that's faster, doesn't use symbols, and works pretty well for simple rough animations and things of the sort.
Use the "edit multiple frames" option where the onion skin tools are, drag it across the entire animation's length, CTRL-A and then you could move/scale it anywhere you want with the free transform tool. Turn off edit multiple frames if you wanna check the sizing.
Anon's trick works good but it takes a little longer to do.

I'd recommend you to try and have the character subtly rotate in 3D space to show the motion's momentum, rather than have it mechanically come to a stop. It'll make the motion have more weight and create more of an impact on the angle change
also, dont have to animate on 1's and 2's all the time, anon. you could go onto 4s if you need to. it could give you more anticipation into the motion.

Your line work is extremely shaky to the point of distraction.

You might wanna practice more with simpler character designs to master the basics a bit more before trying to animate something this complex.

The reason I say this is not to put you down or discourage you, but honestly just because it's easier to overcome issues like shakiness and inconsistency when you have something simpler to work with. Once you've figured out how to get past it, it will be easier to tackle more complex animations like this.

Yep, that got it. Also, did this real quick to experiment with how to trick the eye into thinking your animating more than you are. It’s crazy how much life a little squash and stretch can give an animation. Bounce two poses together and they seem to go right into one another without the need for an inbetween at times.

i use adobe animate cc 2017, just cuz its something i know a lot of earlier web toon creators used and theres plenty of adobe flash tutorials out there. but imo the program you use isn't important as long as your not a complete dumbass. learning any software take less than a month, and i mean a consecutive month to learn all the programs tricks and shortcuts it has to offer. if you really want to learn animation don't spend(waste) all your time learning the programs and learn to draw with a conscious effort of keeping time and position.

It's a 56 week course, and you get one course a week (4 a month at $20).

So to get all 56 tutorials you need to pay $280, and you have to wait a whole year before the course gets to the stuff you want ie you cant skip forward to what you want to see. That's kinda real shit.

Also read about the kickstarter they did which turned out to not deliver after years and no refunds. All he's done since is still try to make brickenwood thing popular over and over and stick to that character (and the game hes advertising with 2 v 2 brikcenwood looks like total shit with floaty unity physics).

maybe apply inverse kinematics with custom curves to resolve the choppiness from in-betweens. don't know much about plugins that show you the motion graph similar to the histograms in photoshop, but if you manage to implement that and work with it, please don't fall onto the twixtor interpolation kind of motion. fewer frames and smears convey more, not 60 fps ultra sharp animation.

I also made this beforehand. Idk how you guys feel about chickenscratchey drawing like this, I always heard it should be avoided artistically, that it is better to go for cleaner lines. I feel like it is slightly easier and faster to draw however, which is important for animation, and I feel like some of the roughness is mitigated by it being in motion? I'm probably just being lazy though haha

Context matters a lot.
Look at ballmasters.
Most comedy shows get pretty lazy with the animation.
That being said it matters more on a project to project basis.

Plan ahead and think where and why is going to move everything you will move.
An example of your mistakes is what the other anon pointed out, as the tits are dragged up by the torso, should start moving up as soon as the torso moves down.

Yea i'll have the light position properly when I place it another test project (this was kinda thrown together right after I figured out how to do this effect). You are welcome.

On seriouse note, my guess is the top left is for camera and the a7,b7 is for the looping animation pattern
the 10 could also just be the number of the chapter from ping pong or something.

Ping Pong the animation was, or just looks rotoscoped, so it's not really good example of japanese animation in my opinion.

What takes longer, 2d animation, or 3d? I used to think it was 2d animation - really detailed 2d renders take time, of course - but looking at it, it almost seems like the other way around. Even if we don't consider the time it takes to make the models, which, since they're reusable, I'm not counting, you really have to fiddle with a lot of stuff very precisely to get the desired results (not counting rerenders and simulations), while in 2d, if you can draw a character, and if you're good at it, you can get a drawing out really fast. I guess environments are what would take longer.

So what do you guys think? Am I looking at things right? I mean, a lot of studios only do 3d now-a-days, but it's easier to find 3d animators than good 2d ones, I'd imagine, so maybe that's a factor? Am I looking at things right? Anyone with a bit more experience can fill me in on this?

You're clearly already good enough to be doing commissions but that's besides the point.

It's your work. You should be doing what YOU want with a character from an intellectual property that's currently in the public consciousness. No one gives a shit about Velma right now, think about characters people do. Maybe do a grown up version of Vanellope from the new Wreck It Ralph movie or a character from the new How to Train Your Dragon or "Mrs. Incredible" from the new Incredibles movie or some shit if you're looking to promote yourself. It's just good business sense dude.

Why not look at what video games are coming out soon? Peach, Rosalina and Daisy may have been done to death but they have pretty cute outfits in the new Mario Tennis game, don't they? I don't know man, do your research and make your own decisions. Doing all this work for this cunt will do nothing for you except get a (You) or (Two) when you could potentially get much (More).
