Are there any exercises that can help me sketch faster while maintaining quality?

Just draw a lot. If you want a shortcut that takes less time and effort. There is non. Now get back to drawing OP

That second example you gave is pretty important. I see a lot of artists draw that way. You can get to that level by practising silhouette. It's mentioned in Keys to Drawing as well. Try drawing the silhouette first thing, and try to think of the 'space' an object takes in the picture plane. That is in essence proportion. Training to see silhouette is an exercise that brings a lot of drawing fundamentals together, awareness of angles, shapes, space and position. Try to do it alot. At some point images will pop into your head. You can visualize them too. And then you just draw. I feel like it engages the spatial as opposed to the symbolic part of the brain. It's pretty key to drawing from imagination. Plus design.
A retard on another thread said this is what beginners do, instead you should draw through the figure, and with forms. Fucking crabs. Construction, if you need it, should follow this. (You might want to have some kind of foundation in classical drawing as well btw. The measurements, plumblines, angles etc.)

>> No.3432660

>>3432533

I don't really think that helps as much as you think it does. I've met people at art school who draw beautiful gestures but can't make finished work.

Oh and practice blind contour and just contour drawing in general. Drawing with a single line throughout, silhouette first, then move in. General -> Specific.

It helps to speed you up especially if you focus in on a specific thing you want to hone. Like gesture, or silhouette.

>> No.3432697

>>3432196
to get faster you just practice being accurate, anyone can draw faster, like you can scribble all over a page in seconds, the issue is accuracy, and so that's what you practice, speed comes on it's own.

do gesture drawings, a lot, of your subject, from various angles various poses, until it becomes second nature

Heres the best advice I got.
Draw forms as shortcuts. Like a head as a upside egg, body as a long pear, etc.
Not too long ago I was thinking of a way to sketch faster and I learned to draw the head, body and limbs as forms before tracing them to produce a body.
Now when I just wanna sketch a quick character I imagine the pose in my head and use forms to simulate it, then go from that.

So pretty much just paint the image in your mind and come up with a shortcut like forms to draw on paper. Then turn it into a human body or whatever.

Drawing silhouette and contour lines does nothing to help you draw from imagination. And in pic that OP provided you can clearly see, that's not a silhouette.

It's not like you learn to draw from imagination by mindlessly drawing random shapes lol.
You observe and mimic. And through the repetition of this you improve your visual library. Then at one point you can basically draw anything by combining all the information that you collected through the years without the need to use reference.
That's what means to draw from imagination.

>Will suddenly everything I said either gain or lose relevance based on how skilled I am?
Yeah, pretty much.
If your art is shit, then it's a proof that you don't know how to draw from imagination.
If your art is good, then it's a good idea to rethink your advice, even if it contradicts what I've been told by other experts (like Scott Robertson who advocates construction rather than some contour drawing).

Anyone can make claims that sound really reasonable. But only people who git gud can prove that their claims are true.

Forgot to answer your claims. Construction drawing and contour drawing are both legit learning tools. Why do you people have to deal in extremes every single time?
Best approach to learning is to experiment with multiple approaches.

Because it looks like in this post: >>3432659 you called people who use construction retards and crabs:

It looked like your idea about how to git gud is opposite of using construction. But now that you elaborated a bit on that (>>3436940) I see that wasn't your point.

The problem is that construction isn't a way to learn drawing so much as it is a tool with requires drawing skills. It enables you to put your drawings in perspective from imagination. But so many people here trip up over it thinking it will make them draw when it won't.

Loomis mentions in Successful Drawing that construction is a twin to contour. You can't have construction without thinking about contour alongside. And that makes sense. Drawing is measuring and using your eye. Construction doesn't do that. So if you're constructing a head in 3/4th. It's going to look crap unless you're observing the angles and shapes that the face will make at that view. Once you've done that enough, you can do it from imagination. But construction alone is only a tool to put your drawings into perspective and have a better sense of form. It actually requires drawing skills to pull off.

Who would you rather believe:
a beggar saying that he knows how to get rich
or a rich businessman saying that he knows how to get rich

Yes, you're right: beggar could know a thing or two about becoming rich. But only someone insane would listen to financial advice from a beggar.
