Do you think ten years from now, Tumblr will still be a viable platform for artists to get exposure or will it go the route of DeviantART?

I already see many people ditching Tumblr for Twitter or Instagram (Even though those are worse options for artists).

>Have to use a third-party program to post from your computer, otherwise it's limited to mobile uploads
>If you use third-party program, you cannot do photosets or upload gifs (You have to convert the latter to a quicktime to upload it)
>Severe size restrictions, sometimes shrinking images poorly or forcing you to awkwardly crop images to make them fit
>No way to organize your gallery
>Cannot edit uploads, have to delete and re-upload
>No way to re-arrange uploaded photos

i dunno i kinda got used to the restrictions.
I dont think instagram is meant to be an online portfolio. It was more meant to be a way to interact with your followers. Ive gained more followers there than on any platform. Its great for making your own IP. But if you want to get noticed by some grand art director go post on artstation. There you can edit your porftolio as you want.

Tumblr was meant to be a viable resource for artists from the start, though. It got political very fast for some reason, more than any other form of social media. I remember vegans were the first to "claim" it, but now it's kinda common for tumblr users to make fun of vegans...

The fact that hurts tumblr the most is a bunch of actually quite shitty things, starting with the site's coding being shit for both desktop and mobile (it's a data hog on mobile), how the tags are handled, and the fact that you have to wait around two weeks to start appearing on tag searches. I'm sure there are more problems.

Tumblr has integration with Instagram, so I guess you don't really have to actively post there... Pixiv might be the only artist-oriented social media worth a damn and it's slowly but surely opening up to westerners.

i agree tumblr is just shit with the way it work. I cant even upload a simple video. And out of my 20 posts only one blew up and got 2000+ notes but got only a few followers from that.
isnt pixiv all in chink chong letters? i dont see it going to appeal westerners anytime soon.

Social media changes a lot and 10 years is a ridiculously long time to expect anything to stay the same, just adjust to the changes and you'll be fine. If you develop an actual following it isn't hard to move them from site to site anyway.

We just need Artstation with porn. Or Deviantart without really bad porn.

>Instagram
Fuck this broken, clunky, shady, restrictive, invasive piece of trash. I unironically wish for all its staff and creators to die horribly.

>it's slowly but surely opening up to westerners
It's still barely translated, uses chinchong tags and constantly tries to sell you PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP you give zero fucks about.

Tumblr is a blog and it started as a casual version of myspace which was the "social media" site that actually supported media, and therefore was useful for artists and musicians.

Tumblr went from self-harm school to pro-ana/mia haven to SJW cult gathering grounds in months. There was never any meaningful ammount of time where tumblr wasn't indoctrination grounds for feeble teenagers.

And it's always been shit for art.

>> No.3430747

but what do you guys think would make for a better art site? Like, I think we all agree that everyone whose on tumblr isn't using it as their first choice. It wasn't an 'Art' site to begin with, it's just meant to meld to the needs of the users and artists got neeeeeds.

I personally go to it because every other site is a pain to upload to. FA, HF, DA, and to a lesser extent pixiv all make you fill out these long tiring forms and tell them your whole life story before you can just get an image hosted.

I feel like pretty much ALL art sites online right now are ten years behind where they need to be to be viable, but I don't know what would fix that.

Honestly, I use it because it strokes my ego

I dunno it feels good to pull up my computer the day after drawing something and see a bunch of people sharing it. Vain as it is, it strokes my ep

Also, it has the network effect. I can post shit to my website all day but that doesn't come with a system to ping people's phones with my latest update and give them the tools to share it with even more people.

Yeah tumblr isn't an 'art' site, but it's a social site and I don't want to draw in a void

I doubt Twitter and Instagram will ever be able to replace DA, Artstation or Tumblr. Way too many bots and fake followers. The truly popular artists understand this. There's a reason why Sakimichan and Ilya still update their DA very regularly. 10 followers on DA or Artstation are worth at least 100 followers on Instagram or Twitter. Tumblr is kind of an inbetween thing between those extremes. It got some bots and fake followers, but not nearly as many as twitter and IG.

Its had an english option for years, and I'm slowly seeing more dirty howaito piggus using it.

They just opened up the translated tags this year, give it some time bud.
I barely notice the premium BS, you can do all the things you need for an art account (upload your art, organize your art, bookmark other artists, message other artists, etc) without paying them a cent.

This, I've got comissions from dA and facebook where my best drawings have like 20 faves/likes. I've never got a comission out of tumblr or instagram despite having thousands of views and reactions.

Just like DeviantArt eternally became that place for weird fetish art, Tumblr will be known as that place for weird SJW art (for lack of a better term)

I get that Instagram is better for photography, but why would twitter be worse?
Just curious.
Twitter has a higher Alexa rank, and seems to be better from my experience in suggesting followers.

Ah, I plan on using Tumblr as an archive, but Twitter more as a news feed for my fans.
I've noticed Reddit is the best for advertising your stuff to a target audience.
Different sites have different purposes.
