Okay, I don't really know where else to ask this (Q&A seems to be more for technical questions), but how the heck am I supposed to be drawing something that doesn't take place in a generic daytime setting?

More specifically I'm trying to figure out how to paint something that takes place at sunset but couldn't figure out what kind of color scheme I'm supposed to use for lighting/shadows. It's straightforward with regular sunlight (warm lighting, cool shadows), but I just don't understand how to apply that to other scenarios. What exactly am I missing here?

I keep searching for examples but it just looks like they took a regular lighting situation and slapped on a multiply filter (pic related). Is it really that simple? Am I overthinking this?

at sunset there's two light sources, the blue sky in one direction and the warm sun in the other. they call it the golden/magic hour in photography.

unfortunately it's a bit annoying finding a good example in google image search because everyone takes a picture of the sky, which means you see the light not the lighting and photos tend to kill the blue part which is much more vividly blue to the naked eye. i recommend actually going outside during sunset and having a look. or as an alternative the film heaven's gate (1980) is basically all filmed during magic hour.

For the life of me I can't figure out why this face is so unappealing to me. Specifically the thumbnail of it; the drawing seems fine up close but looks terrible zoomed out in my opinion. Is it the lack of value on the face? Is the nose too bright for the rest of the face? I tried adjusting both to no success in making it better.

meant 'the lips arent the same value' as a general rule. upper lip is generally darker, but because a main issue in her face is the giant contrast between individual features, i suggest making the bottom one lighter as opposed to darkening the top

thanks, I think the head shrunk when I was messing with the liquefy. Oversaturation being the issue makes sense, I was trying to study someone's style and felt like I had to throw in the shiny nose. Definitely went and polished too much, I like the previous version of the face better.

I think you need to work on your surroundings - figure out how to do scenery better, and accessories to that scenery. the line formed at the parting of the hair should describe the form of the head
lower lips dont usually bulge into two different sections
far eyebrow seems a bit high
you could also try to work on your edges since it looks a bit smudgy (especially the eyes and their reflections/highlights. im sure fixing that would bring a lot of life to the drawing)

Painted a foam sphere sitting on foam core. I know I keyed it too dark and blew-out the reflected light so it looks more like polished clay than foam.

I find I have to scrub paint with no medium in super thin or it's uncontrollable and turns into a smudgy mess. At this rate I'm gonna go through a brush and tube of paint every three paintings.

I'm a beginner and I'm currently practicing gestures and keep fucking up my proportions. I think the hands, head and feet are too small but at the same time i feel like the whole body is just stretching. Also quick note that i use structures to sketch the body before i start outlining it.

use references more, especially for the hands. Flip your canvas both horizontally and vertically while you work. Also, see how you cut off the arm? Dont do that while you're still working on it. You can frame it later but it's gonna be a HELL of a lot easier for you if you draw as much of the body as you can now. So I'm back at it again trying to design a planet with aliens with... I suppose novelty for novelty's sake with set limitations for the planet/biomes they live in. Anthow, I always struggle with intelligent life, because what I'm realizing is that it seems like intelligent life inevitably ends up converging on a sort of generic look. Like humans look pretty plain compared to other animals, but are great for customizing, but the other option would be to create a race that has an interesting design, but not so great to customize. Learn what edge control in painting is.
Having everything equally smoothed out makes your art look like a 10yr old deviantart artist's.
Also shading with white makes your skin look unrealistic. You should go from more yellowish and desaturated color to the opposite. Just check your reference with color picker to see how the color changes.

It's hard to tell for me if there are any weird mistakes with the anatomy because idk who you drew. It looks like the imitation of someone's head and that's fine. As for the background, it looks fine. I'd personally smudge the lines so it didn't look grainy. But that's just me, and it looks fine regardless.

is fine, has inconsistent level of detail though, makes it look a bit funny. because it's an artifact you kinda want to run your eye over it and look at all the little details, as if it were something interesting you have in your hands irl, so when you get to a blurry bit it kinda spoils the illusion.

The character is holding a scepter (you know, like typical regal scepter in the original tarot card, and i tried to "cutify" it there).
For the next arcana i looked at some tulle reference to give more volume to the skirt part.

Then after making this card, I looked at some Doré illustrations, and realised that i should vary line weight in cross-hatching, not only in the outlines.

do you start drawing the faces from the top to the bottom? The top halves of your faces often seem to eat up the bottom. I kind ofhave a similar problem myself, I think starting to draw the face details starting from the chin can help on this particular issue. Other than that there isn't anything i can say

How does one learns to render? No, seriously, all tutorials I find on the net are basically "then draw the rest of the fucking owl". I try to analyze other's works but I am constantly have a feeling that I am doing everything in a wrong way.

You should be concerned with fundamentals rather than rendering at this point, it's not even me trying to be mean I'm just saying rendering will not save a flat drawing but if you have some sense of how to handle light/color, value and shape then automatically you will also render better because a big part of rendering is about knowing how to handle color light and shape

I'm not sure what's beg or not since there is a lot of samey stuff in both.

But as critique...there are a few issues with the light. if it comes from behind then why is the leg not in shadow? if it's from the left then your table needs to have the light less on the right and more in the center
the chain also is lighted strangely and the left arm catches ligtht but i don't know from where.
your leg muscle is whay to strongly pronounced.

your left foot is also bizzare and needs to be longer.

and the perspective of your tiles and you're rocket don't match up.

You also tend to light everything in the same value...but some area should get have a dimmer value structure.

There is surely things i missed..but that's what pops out at the moment.
