Hey traditional fags, let's talk about our paper. Do you have a brand preference? What kinds of paper do you like for sketching, water coloring, inking etc.?

>> No.3422332

copy paper for sketching. I care more about the pencils then the paper.

I am a poorfag.

>> No.3422594

I draw comics, so I mainly use bristol board. My preferred brand is the Strathmore 500 Sequential Series semi-smooth board that has a bit of grit to it. Love the off-white colour of the paper, much better than blinding white

Strathmore sketchbooks. It's the only paper that doesn't tear apart when I erase something 5 times.

I prefer to use strathmore sketchbooks, cardstock paper, and strathmore Bristol paper.

I got a lot of Cason Edition since it's the cheapest 100% cotton paper I can find locally. Pretty good for pencil and ink, decent for watercolor as well even though it's not very thick.

I just go to the nearest shop that has sketchbooks and buy one.

Does it matter? Educate me on paper.

Literally just printer paper unless you want to keep old sketchbooks around. I use strathmore 400 sketchbooks because I like the feel of the paper. And if you have anything other than a michaels around you they’re pretty cheap ($6.00 for 80 pages). But don’t plan on keeping anything worthwhile on printer paper it smudges like fuckin crazy and forget about inking on it. Don’t waste your money though on nicer paper unless you’re gonna sell your art. I’ve wasted too much money on finer papers, except arches watercolor paper that shits fuckin worth every cent in labor and time saving.

I really like, and was surprised, at how well the canson universal sketchbook takes pencil, ink, marker, and watercolor despite how thin and plain the paper is.

Otherwise, I also just buy reams of copy paper, and $5 canson watercolor pads at walmart.

Good paper is less stressed by pencils and erasers, meaning you can modify the same drawing more.

Texture is subjective. On smooth paper erasing is easier, and you have less smudging, but flat tones without a blender are harder to do.

I like to use >>3424013 too.

Not as shit as printer paper, not as expensive as proper sketchbooks.

+1 for basically anything Strathmore.
You can get packs of 200 for relatively cheap, nice enough thickness and texture for dry media work

Anyone got any recommendations for cheaper watercolor paper? I'm a poorfag trying to learn more traditional stuff and if I constantly buy those watercolor sketchbooks at michaels/hobby lobby/wherever the fuck, for watercolor practice it ends up costing me a lot even with coupons

I like moleskines honestly. The tooth is pretty nice and they can take some heavy work and mediums in them.
any paper that can take the medium you use is good enough unless you need archival paper, and poorfags that champion copier paper are the most annoying fucks out there.

I loved doing finished pieces in them when I had one (or four)

The good stuff, not for sketching
It doesn't bleed
It doesn't breaks
It can't be bargained with.
It can't be reasoned with.
It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear! And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!

>artist's loft sketchbook
I just brought a $5 artist loft sketchbook just to use for gesture drawings. Tired of copy paper getting "everywhere".

I'm also using the artist loft 140lb watercolor paper and it's not that bad for the price!
While I'm talking about Artist Loft paper I should mention their canvas paper is pretty nice too. After using a 50% coupon I was able to get 10 pages of 16x20 canvas paper for just $10.

>> No.3428961

I just use the big red sketchbooks that you can buy at micheals and a mechanical pencil. I'm thinking of buying better shit soon though. Cause I'm starting to see the limits of my materials.

With watercolors paper is a huge factor, between cheap paper and cotton paper there are huge differences, and imo using cheap watercolors on cheap paper is a waste of money and time.

Use acrylic or gouache and use cheap mixed paper, like Canson.

I like Hammermill Cardstock most of all. Graphite erases from it like dry-erase markers off a whiteboard, ink dries in no time and goes down super smooth, good with markers and colored pencils too. It's thick and can take as much erasing as you want to put it through. And it is very white and smooth, some might find it too smooth even but the smoother the better in my book.

Wouldn't be great for water colors or other paints though, but for anything else I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't want to use it.

disagree, cheap watercolors are perfectly fine for washy stuff, you only need more expensive paints for more complex pictures

I use Saunders Waterford 300gsm block (cold press) for watercolor. I also have some Full Imperial 300gsm Fabriano artistico cold press paper but stretching it is always a hassle.

For sketches I like copy paper, newsprint or Hanhemüle sketchbook (if it has any texture I abandon traditional pencil for mechanical pencil instantly. I hate graphite + texture).
