've been trying to work on it again, recently
too bad it takes me like x4 time to make the lines alright instead of just painting it, or doing a "pencil" sketch.

The drawing is a shitty drawing, but the comments on inking are correct.

I'm pretty good at lineart but absolute shit at coloring/rendering so I tend to either colorless or use solid base colors

funny because linework is technically much harder than rendering

The inking on the left is more charming, it also becomes painfully obvious that the artist doesn't know how hair works when they try to detail it on the right.

Fucking shit digitally.
I'm okay traditionally but all my digital lines just look like ass.

It's trash because I'm trash at drawing. I don't know how mangaka can casually let anyone ink their pages.

What are some books on the subject?

Mines alright, it just falls to shit when I color and render details underneath it. It just doesn't blend well.

Anyone know a good workflow to coloring your lineart overtop rendered details?
Do you use a particular blending layer? Or simply lock opacity and paint over it?

>>3417800
What do you mean by "casually let anyone ink their pages"? Just like with comic books, there are artists who specialize in inking and those are the ones who do that sort of job. Most of the time though mangaka do their own inking and just let assistants do the backgrounds and special effects etc.

Do you zoom out to see the whole picture when you draw your lines?
Or do you zoom in really close and try to exactly trace lines from your sketch?
If you're doing the latter, you can try zooming in to sections, torso, breast, head, eye, hair, etc. and do them individually, or just ink at a zoom level where you can see the whole picture at once. You can also use a program with stabilizers or download plugins for them if your lines are wobbly.
You can also try to make thick lines and go back and erase parts of them. This only looks good with softer linework usually.

>>3417943
If you're rendering something really well, you almost won't need lineart on top. You can always erase it or paint on top of it with a new layer, or blend it into the shadows like the pic related. Any sort of hard edge you can define with a line, but softer ones you can afford to erase your lineart. As for coloring it, you can grab some of the dark values from your shadows and darken them more before coloring them. Since you're saying lock opacity, I'm assuming you're using SAI or the like, and you might want to use a clipping mask/layer instead so you can make adjustments more easily. You don't have to make all the lines dark though, you can have some be a defined highlight.

Thinner / lesser lineart = more rendering
Thicker / more detailed lineart = solid color / cell shaded / less rendering

I'm just now starting to vary my line weight and thickness (I mostly paint, very rarely ink anything)
Does anyone have any other tutorials/tips/images like the one in OP?

Like seemingly a lot of other anons in this thread, I'm shite at digital inking but relatively okay at traditional.

I have this problem where I make all the lines too thick and I hate it because it makes everything I do look childish to me. I do it simply because if I make my brush small enough to make the type of lines I'd like then I can barely see what I'm doing and the lines become pixelated/scratchy/less smooth. I try upping the resolution of my canvas and it doesn't really seem to help the fact that I still can't fucking see the nib of it, I zoom in and then I can't see what I'm doing properly either then because I can't see the whole picture. Am I retarded? Any advice? I use Krita mainly if it's of any importance.

I got better at linework after moving to csp if that helps.
