As far as I know gesture drawing is for getting the flow for things right? To make dynamic poses, to not make stiff drawings. Pic related.

I never understood gesture either. I always thought it was some artsy fartsy bs. The essence/flow/energy of a pose sounds like some hippie crap to me.

I knew I was serious about improving though, so I gave everything a shot despite how much I didn't like it upon first glance.

I went to a 3 hour life drawing session that were only 2-5 minute poses and spent those 3 hours making crappy gestures. I hated every second of it. I couldn't stand making terrible drawings, and I was making them at breakneck speeds.

It's important to note that I was studying anatomy at this point too. What gesture does is internalize the anatomy and proportions past an intellectual understanding into an intuitive understanding. When you're confronted with the human figure, there are a bunch of observational problems to solve. You have 2-5 minutes to make marks that best represent the figure. Find and lay down the landmarks, the perspective, the muscle rhythms. When you do this over and over again, your drawings will improve simply because you automate a lot of those processes and you can dedicate your brain power to other areas (whatever you need to improve on, or challenges you).

I go to life drawing every week now for the 2-5 minute gestures. If it's not for you then it's not for you, but I urge you skeptical anons to at least give it an honest shot before dispensing with it.

I guess it doesn't really matter to me since this place is kind of a shithole and I never post. But after coming here so regularly, this place became a little sentimental to me. So I hope all you crabs make it.

You do that, but that doesn't mean gesture doesn't help.

Generally you do the gesture and then you construct on top of it. Constructing without gesture is usually stiff and sometimes poorly placed. A decent knowledge of gesture just means you set a good lay-in, it doesn't need to be 'I want to draw a perfect figure in 2 minutes'.

Don't fall for the standard /ic/ stupidity of "it's useless don't bother" vs "do 8 hours of gestures a day every day and attain enlightenment", they're both retarded, do some quick gestures, improve on the good ones with construction and proper anatomy. /ic/ has a disgusting lack of nuance and always seems to aim for stupid extremes.

Obviously you should know structure beforehand, but most artists combine gesture and structure. Not sure why idiots like you always start by making a stupid claim like "gesture is useless" and then when they are being called out for their stupidity, they retract it to something like "If you just started out drawing for the first time ever in your life, then gesture is useless!"

It's fucking asinine to always assume that every discussion about art should focus only on the most inexperienced beginners like yourself. Gesture is a very important tool for intermediate artists to make their figures more expressive, dynamic and less stiff.

I would just like to say that human beings are not like the Spock dude from Star Trek and still feel things like emotions so while we use logic as our main tool it is ok sometimes to simply tap into our primitive thinking and just feel our way through a drawing. Drawing is an art form, an expression of oneself. It should not always be treated as a procedural mechanical process. The beauty of art is that unlike a surgeon your mistakes could create a better result and also it is fair game to romanticize art as again it’s all about expression. So please take the surgical knife away from the paper every now and then and just draw.

>So please take the surgical knife away from the paper every now and then and just draw

The problem is that "feel the pose" in an abstract concept.

Yes, it's ok to just draw and have fun, but knowledge helps you understand what that "feel" could mean for you, and how you can translate it to a drawing.

The torsos with 1 above them are the one where I tried to copy the model and the one with 2 are a bit more exaggerated/stylised. So once again, if I did some mistake, please tell me what's wrong.
