Yo, about the risk map, I lost a little faith in the idea of it being completely automatic and uncontrollable. I think you need to be able to control at least what direction you want to expand in for it to have any meaning at all.

I've written the functionality to expand east/west/north/south, I just need some way to get the input. The easiest way is if you select it on dad either when you submit or as a setting on your profile, but then it becomes integrated to the site. I had hoped it could manage without requiring site changes, since those who don't give a shit about it don't need to be hassled by it and just continue using the site without even knowing it exists.
I could also take commands from the thread, but that's a lot of manual labor for me to do, and will eventually kill the project when I get tired of punching commands.
Any other options you guys can think of?

Banana, do you have any thoughts on it? Site integration would just be a select box with which direction you want to go, either on your profile and then return the direction the user currently has selected in the submission json resource, or selected per submission.

Yeah, "short axis of ellipse aligns with the center-line of cylinder" is actually just a simplification.

Real-world cylinders' ellipse alignment deviates the further it is from the Center of Vision. "Perspective for Comic Book Artists" covers this topic if you want to know the details.

That's a pretty slick solution, I didn't think about having descriptions on submissions. Downside is people have to manually type some codeword every submission, but I think that's fine, like EXPAND:N or similar.

Currently I'm thinking:
- If you post you get to expand into 1 territory bordering your own.

- If you say you want to expand in a direction, N/S/E/W, whichever territory you border that is the best match is where you will go.

- If you say you want to attack someone, you will expand into one of their territories if they are bordering you. If you don't border next to them, you'll move in their direction as best you can. You can't choose exactly which territory you take if you're bordering to that person over several territories though.

- If you don't say anything you'll just be expanding to a random bordering territory.

Well all the cylinders towards the center of the screen seem to have the minor axis match the correct 90 degree angle against the vp lines, except a few like the middle one of the top left, but I think you've simply missed a bit on the most round ones.

The only ones I see that couldn't match up to make the minor axis a 90degree rotation of the vp line is the one at the edges like the far right one. But that might simply be because 3d programs uses a flattened perspective, and also keep in mind that the minor axis doesnt have to cross through the actual centre of the circle, for example if the cylinder is in extreme perspective, one side of the two halves of the circle will get squashed but the minor axis doesn't move together with the centre point, see pic related. The only rules that I know to be always true with the minor axis is it will always be 90 degrees off the vanishing line of the cylinder, and that it will go between the "highest" and "lowest" points of the circle, or aka the longest distance through the circle you could get.

Though I haven't done DAB or read through his stuff, this is simply my understanding of it through what I've learned from my teacher and how I understood your question.

I joined when original LAS was about to die. There were about 60 daily submissions that dropped to 30 when I left. Then the site died. The highest number of users participating in a challenge at the time was 20. Users that joined the site when the original admin was around say it used to be even larger than that, that's why 40 users in a challenge is a huge number from my point of view, but is probably normal to those that used the site two years ago.

Using a grid to check proportions / angles is not that different from using plumb lines or checking proportions with a pencil, just be careful not to be brainlessly copying things square by square because it won't be teaching you very much about your subject, just about copying lines.

It's a useful way to see what aligns to what / what is proportional to what, anyone who measures with a pencil / plumb line / ruler is doing the same thing.

Most people who use Facebook embody a life philosophy that generally runs completely contrary to the ethos of DAD and the culture it is sourced on: one that is focused on anonymity, constructive criticism and self-examination.

I have used Facebook in my high school and college years. While an effective means of getting in contact with my friends, it is also host to some of the most vapid, hamfisted attempts at buying a minute of your time and admiration without even the slightest bit of genuine self-reflection. Most offensive are the amateur artists, who work on a piece, post it to their wall, say something either manipulatively self-deprecating or humble bragging. They never advance, because who the hell would break their happy little echo chamber with some constructive criticism? I know some friends who do this. It's honestly kind of vomit-inducing and amounts to the easiest way of buying cheap, futile affirmation.

LAS has always been about keeping your head down and putting in work, building confidence through habit, and eventually giving people the strength to express themselves artistically and with greater technical eloquence. It's not about obtuse displays of skill or cries for attention, ranging from subtle to obscene that miss the point entirely: that it's not about the destination but the journey. We're not here to show off where we are, but the fact that we're going there. There's a reason why we don't have social media integration, likes, or view counters.

Sorry for the rant. I just fucking hate Facebook, and most of social media in general.

As a side note, some of the more quality interactions within the community are only possible when it remains small. While I would never turn away new users who simply want to get better, it's hard to build a sense of belonging and community the larger it gets.
