IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You're wrong.

Copying comes before drawing, and doing the copying exercises from learn-to-draw books will let you work on fundamentals one step at a time. Copying photographs or real life or other art makes you learn everything at once while, at the same time, not even telling you what you're learning.

Go do some copying from Loomis.

First copy, then try your own.

When your copies look good, move on to drawing from imagination like he does in the exercise. When your drawings from imagination look good, move on to the next exercise.

Note that "good" is relative. You're a beginner so everything you draw will look like (and is) shit, but you will be able to see after just a few days of fairly minimal grinding (2 hours a day) visible improvement that will tell you when it's time to move on.

So I'm currently working on figure drawing and I wanna ask what would be ideal starting points for creating and drawing characters? I know this is mainly for drawing real life people which I need in the long run, but any books/videos/courses for drawing characters from scratch would be greatly appreciated.

>> No.3412372

so i have been heearing two conflicting advice given around a lot which is; don't copy other artists and instead draw from life and develop your own style; find one artist and copy, copy, copy, until you are just as good as them and if you want to not look like an imitation, find another different artist and do the same and you will fall somewhere in the middle and have your own seemingly unique style. If you do this enough to different artists the more you will stand out as not looking like one particular artist or another.

Also, it is interesting to note that I hear more of the former come from teachers, professors, students and places like this, while I hear the latter more from actual successful/professional artists who recall constantly copying x artist when they were younger.

So which path do you guys follow and which one do you think is correct?

>> No.3412374

>>3412364
I mean technically you can start as soon as you know gesture and how to block in the figure, because after that it's pretty much connect the dots. Still use reference though as you'll gain more by studying and drawing the figure from a reference to use in your character drawing as opposed to just pulling a pose out of your currently empty hat.

Never stop practicing and moving forward with anatomy though. You'll build that pool if subtle nuances to include in your drawing and really impress the viewer, such as the squash and stretch of the torso, or how the eyelids react when you grin, to name a few of many things.

Look into master studies.

While life drawing is important to build that library, it's not how you develop a style or workflow. Artists who think they develop a style from life drawing still picked it up by observing other artists work. You don't just look at the bowl of fruit and all of a sudden know how to render.

Don't copy, don't trace. Find the art that inspires you and study it, then with your knowledge of the fundamentals try your best to recreate your own way. Look at the forms, look at how they draw anatomy. See what you like or what you would fix. Observe color, lighting and shading. Look at their strokes and lines to figure out what tools they used. Figure out the perspective. The list goes on.
Do this with different pieces from different artists and you'll develop your own workflow.

A movie writer was inspired to write his movie after watching several movies and a music writer was inspired to write by several musicians. Artists are no different.

I know that learning digitally has all sorts of draw backs, but how important is the size of the tablet? I've had a bamboo pen and touch for a couple of years that I'd occasionally scribble with, but now that I'm actually trying to improve, it feels like the difference in stroke length done by hand compared to actual length drawn isn't something I should be learning with.

Define a light source and deconstruct that snek in cylinders. You need at least 10 cylinders. Shading cylinders should be easy. A harder mode is to define bouncing light and add that to the cylinders.

Post that and we should be able to get a better idea as to what's making you struggle. Also don't be scared of going really dark. Shading doesn't need to have a high value range, but you have to be able to use that full range effectively.
