1. Drawing seriously for 9 years, which started in second year of art school.
2. 28
3. 8, plus a finished piece that took about 20h.
4. Porn, weed, coffee, also, but more rarely, amphetamines, psilocybin, nicotine, and vidya (lol all I play is Diablo 2 now).
5. Every day. It used to be just porn and vidya but I replaced vidya with a bunch of other shit. Sometimes I can quit stuff for up to a year, but it always comes back.
6. It seems doable because I'm semi-pro, but I've been at the same level for about 4 years. Just need a bit of an extra push. However, I'm becoming really cynical and curmudgeonly and all I want to do is work on personal fine art pieces and writing without thinking about the commercial side of things. So if that overcomes me I will be NGMI and will probably go get a STEM degree or something.

Yeah, I work for a photographer part time. My inital goal was to do freelance illustration, either for book publishers or magazines. I mostly work for magazines. I struggle a lot with self promotion and networking, and I'm very inconsisent stylistically.

However, I have deeper seated, less achievable goals. I'd like to publish graphic novels. I've self published a few, but I want a real publisher, obviously. Also, I have developed a desire to do large scale fine art paintings and have gallery shows, but not much progress on that yet, just something I've been thinking about for a couple years or so.

My advice would be to have a clear goal and well planned out strategy, study both fundamentals and the industry you want to get into, learn how to run a business and maybe move to a bigger city. For some reason, I'm just not willing to make the right sacrifices. I kind of want to just lie perfectly still and do nothing for the rest of my life.

How do I have Dunning Krueger when I constantly worry about my drawings not being as good with even some people on the internet, even fucking /ic/?
All I'm saying is that in that ONE SINGLE aspect, figure drawing, I feel like I'm better than some small minority, NOT ALL OR EVEN MOST, of the very YOUNG rookies currently working in the industry. When it comes to animation, sequential art, color, storyboarding and composition, I know very little because I also lack the balls to actually make something, so I'm in this kind of weird cycle of just doing studies, but I’ve recently been putting more effort into breaking out of that. And before you point it out, yes I realize that I kind of answered my own question and also know that it's very important not to ignore those aspects of art.
I think I've come across like a jerk in my post, I don't mean to disparage anyone, but it's more like ignorance in my part as to how people get into the industry and the skills needed
I'll post some examples hollup.

First example is themsjolly, I can't find her figure drawings but they are on twitter, and I think they're awful for someone who is paying college tuition to become an animator. I think she's in her 4th and final year.
Elena Manetta is currently working for some studio as an animator/storyboard artist and this is as close to a figure drawing as I can find of hers http://elenamanetta.tumblr.com/post/133001952168/drawing-girls-and-practicing-fabric, I think this animation here is really good http://elenamanetta.tumblr.com/post/125935199008/little-animation-for-kyra-kupetsky-based-on-her
I don't think she's bad, it's just that I don't understand how this is where they are after 4 years of paying out the ass for an education. It's my fault for using myself as part of an example but what I'm really wondering is how there are so many starving artists on twitter and pixiv that are WAY fucking better than them, yet these people get to work for a studio
I know I probably come across as having a "oh I'm better than them"-attitude but honestly, I'm more worried and constantly having a finger on the pulse. I guess I am being a little arrogant, but I think it's fucking dumb to just say "dunning krueger"

I dunno, they both look pretty solid for a 4th year. They could probably whip the shit out of most of us when it comes to figure drawing.

Compared to the people in my graduating class (illustration, animation and design school, not the best ever, but...), they'd probably be top 5 skill-wise and top 3 appeal-wise. That's about the minimum for 'making it'. Most people going to art school will eventually fail.

Basically they've catered their styles to a specific market. Fundies aren't everything, but they clearly have decent fundies. They probably do study figures, but just like to keep their outward appearance really consistent instead of shitting up their blogs with all their failures.

Dunning Kruger is on the verge of just being a meme here. I think some people legitimately don't know what it means/where it came from. Just stay humble, keep working hard and you'll be fine.

Re the animation industry one of the absolute biggest things is connections and networking (like any industry, but animation is a much more concentrated and small industry so it counts even more.) Meet and chat with other aspiring animators on twitter and they may be able to give you a connection or hot tip someday.

I'm pretty ignorant to a lot of studio and industry stuff. Again, don't think they are bad as an artist, they definitely know way more than me, and have made animated shorts, which is a hell of a lot more than what I can do, just doing some figure studies here and there.

Also would like to say. Msjolly has actually seen some of my figure drawings during AtroxC stream on twitch and she even said that I was better than her. It made me really wonder about what exactly the industry wants, college education and things of that nature.

Oh also stop dunking on other people for their perceived lack of skill, nothing will turn other artists away from helping you faster than if you're sneering at them. If what you posted in >>3396637 is any demonstration, I think you're seeing simple styles and conflating them with lack of ability; learn to respect both the skill needed to gracefully simplify/stylize things, and the marketing talent of those who have 'made it' with work thatt you don't consider good enough.

Just looked her up and scrolled the media/images section of her twitter back about a year, saw no figure drawings (maybe I missed them) but the cartoon work posted displays a pretty excellent grasp of shape, weight, motion, charismatic character design, basically overall the skill set of a successful animator.

I believe you that maybe her figure drawings have some problems when judged by, like, figure drawing standards, but it looks like whatever she did learn when studying fundies was the right stuff for an animator's toolkit.

Taking the MAJORITY of your art time away from stylized or from-imagination drawings is understandable and good form for people grinding fundies or anatomy, but if you're interested in animation and cartooning I just don't understand why you wouldn't be, well, doing some OCCASIONAL cartoons. Especially since all the animators I know have been workaholics re drawing cartoons, as long as I've known them. Drawing little cartoons and things is like breathing air for animators, esp professional. I myself am a just-for-fun cartoonist with a moderate interest in the field of animation and there was never a period in my drawing life I didn't make at least a couple shitty cartoons a week, sionce after all that was the whole reason I was bothering to learn the other things, and it was more personally enjoyable to me than the figure studies and perspective exercises and shit (like the dessert after veggies).

I just, I'm really baffled. Do you actually enjoy making cartoons?

I think my goal's achievable. I'm in STEM, so I'd consider myself to have 'made it' once I can produce drawings like these (next post) and get the occasional commissions here and there. 5 more years to reach my target level doesn't sound too absurd. I've already had a few who asked if I accept commissions (which I have declined as the quality of my drawings so far are inconsistent and still not that good imo); so I think I have a small potential audience out there.

I know this is just a meme at this point, but you do realize that neuroplasticity is only present in young children, right? There's a huge difference in neuroplasticity between a 6 year old and a 19 year old. The difference in neuroplasticity between a 19 year old and a 35 year old however is basically nonexistent.

I like them man. You have pretty nice lines and a cool construction.

Sorry if it’s sideways

1 I’ve been drawing seriously for over a year now. I have mainly just been focusing on getting anatomy and perspective down. I just draw cool dudes mostly. It’s starting to be a lot of fun and giving back a lot.

2 22

3 somewhere between 7 and 14 probably I’m not gonna count by that is my usual amount. One or two a day.

4 porn, jammin out on piano or guitar, mindless Netflix, weightlifting, video games some times, I want to play sports but all my friends are nerds or stoners.

5 I worked out, watched like 10 episodes and the iron giant, jacked off to degenerate filth, and played piano today so 0 I guess.

6 I don’t think I have a super high aim. I like 2d Disney style stuff. It has a lot of charm but it isn’t so tough. I think by 25 I will have passed my goals and be working on projects like comics or something. I take my hobbies pretty seriously as far as consistency goes. I learned how to play guitar really well so I imagine I can do the same with art.

0. This piece was a recent experiment in comic book style shading. Try not to judge too harshly.

1. I have drawn my whole life but took it seriously about 3 years ago.

2. Probably the oldest mother f ucker here. I'm halfway to being a goddamn senior citizen. 37.

3. My work is 90% done in digital and I only use a small notebook for thumbnails to get my layouts figured out.

4. Hahaha um.....cigarettes, weed, dope and myfreecams and street fighter.

5. Hahahaha damn near every day.

6. Because even though I do the things listed in no. 4 I spend that time being high to study and practice. I don't go out and I don't have a gf, so there isn't much to distract me other than work and when I need to eat, shit or shower (Everyday)

Between illustration, vectors, motion graphics and zbrush I know I can land a job in a art related field. My issue is mostly commuting to a particular chosen field, which I'm leaving open because the job will sort of dictate this.

As far as my drug habit goes, the learning curve of software added with the pressure I put on myself for success and personal expectation can be tremendous. The chemicals don't affect me like other people. I don't turn into a dirtbag and start sucking dick for another bag or steal your vcr, I go straight home and paint. It's a tool I use, it doesn't use me.

I had a intro to figure drawing class, but that class was more about getting rid of symbol drawing rather than studying figure drawing techniques and applying them and I failed it lol.

I spend most of my time at home critiquing my own work and I don't have anyone teaching me. Basically I just draw a lot and try to keep an open mind. I also ask other artists a lot of questions even if the questions themselves are pretty simple.

My basic study cycle is attempt>study>apply. I work mostly in traditional. I'm just brute forcing improvement by drawing a lot. Also I enjoy the grind a whole lot, it's fun.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias wherein people of low ability have illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their cognitive ability as greater than it is. The cognitive bias of illusory superiority derives from the metacognitive inability of low-ability persons to recognize their own ineptitude; without the self-awareness of metacognition, low-ability people cannot objectively evaluate their actual competence or incompetence.

Partially because of this thread, I just baleeted my entire porn collection 12 years in the making. Never done that before.

160,000 files... mostly hand picked.

My problem wasn't that I was getting into extreme shit (mostly just softcore/erotica) or masturbating 5 times a day or anything. My problem was that I developed an obsession with hunting and collecting. But I finally realised that the task is endless, it suddenly felt like I was swimming through a huge abyss with no hope of reaching the shore. I would rather swim hopelessly in the creative abyss.

Been working on 2 commissions... each on a basically A4 size. I don't doodle a lot outside of finished pieces though, which is something I need to work on.

>4. your main dopamine source (coffe, sugar, nicotine, alcohol, gambling, video games, porn, weed, etc.)
Definitely porn, because weed is illegal where I live and I have absolutely zero street smarts.

Zero.

>6. the reason you think why you're GMI
I just want to draw commissions (mostly porn) but I also started focusing again on my non-porn work and selling it on Society6 and RedBubble. I'm OK with being self-employed when it comes to art, I don't want to "break into the industry" or anything.

I weld for a living because I wasn't ever able to afford art school, so I'm hoping by the time I'm 30 I'll have the money I need to pay for a degree. Got screwed by the military so I can't use my GI bill for art school(it's too expensive), so there went a sixth of my total life so far, and my sister got screwed by a cosigner so now she's in debt with zero fallback other than hoping she'll get lucky with her own talents. Yeah, that's why I won't go for loans. I just want to write a graphic novel, and if I ever fail as an artist I can always just write. Drawing's fun.

>I know the secret to drawing is visualization, creativity and memory, and I've been doing many mental exercises which tire the shit out of me; I know art is born on the mind, not on paper. I've confirmed that they're all skills that can be trained, and the method gives me much better and faster results compared to building things and moving things around on paper only. Despite this I feel doubt in my methods since I see nobody talking about what seems to me the holy grail of art - be it visual arts, music, writing, engineering, etc. - and it makes me wonder if I'm wrong (maybe it's just something so obvious nobody really mentions it), and because of this it's hard to find the motivation to keep going, and do the form, light and anatomy studies to finally make good art from my mind.

I think my biggest obstacle is that I constantly second guess myself as to why I want to make art. Deep down, I feel like I want to tell stories and bring emotions with art, but some days that goal just seems so vague, and I can't help but think if that's REALLY what I want. I have months where I draw every day, and months I don't draw at all, and it's honestly really frustrating since I've seen how much I can improve in just one month. Pic related was me after 2-3 weeks of practice, and before that I couldn't even draw a stick figure that looked right. In a way, I never gave much value to anything drawn from life, it was never my goal, and I just see those drawings as kind of stepping stones to acclimatize myself to the process, but I would be lying if I said I didn't feel great about some of those early drawings.

Probably said too much, but it kinda feels good getting it all out, so thanks for listening, /ic/.

Well, for what it's worth I think you're on the right track with visualization. It's what I've been doing and it's worked out pretty well for me. On top of that, I've found drawing from life matches drawing from something you're visualizing much closer than drawing from a photograph. Making stories with your art is a relatively low bar to set though, seeing as that's more dependent on your writing ability and once your audience is hooked it could be stick figures for all they care.

As an SVA animation graduate myself (mentioning because artist example you mentioned is sva student) I can tell you that department was RIDDLED with shit artists that just get by on style alone, it doesnt even have to be a pleasing style. They cant figure draw for shit. I imagine this is the case with a ton of artschools. The only advantage they have over you is the ability to make connections with industry workers, we had a program where they take students and intern them exclusively.

Make cold calls, send emails, do whatever you have to do to make friends who are working in the field, it's one way to make it while being mediocre.

Me, I just stopped giving a shit about animation after graduating and went concept artist instead because I realized I like to make one drawing pretty rather than make 2000 drawings for a minute long short.

1. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, but nothing serious though. Mostly it was just Dragon Ball scribbles that moved to Death Note. That kind of thing. I started taking it seriously March 2018. I'm still studying Loomis, but I think I got too focused on the head. I'd probably read up on his other books soon

2. I'm 22.

3.Usually a page for a day. I try to cram studies in one A4 page.

4. Cigarettes and coffee. I could do without the coffee but cigarettes are too difficult for me to let go of.

5. I had both an hour ago.

6. This is the first time in a while that I'm actually focused on gitting good without using any shortcuts. I'm trying to use my time practicing as efficiently as possible

I actually like these the most, good sense of form and proportion. The first one's torso is too small and she looks like a little girl. I sure hope she's not... You're way too hard on yourself. I think you should leave /ic/ for a bit, it's definitely not the best place for positive remforcement, or encouragement. Why not start a sketchbook thread on ConceptArt?

I mean, if I get serious, and manage to 1.) stop hating myself and 2.) get the ability to fucking focus and relax. I also have no idea what I want making it to be for myself.

It doesn't work like that anon, your attitude and work ethic right now is already your upper limit; it's as serious as you can get. Rarely can someone change their sloppy work ethic, especially for someone who's been at it for 12 years. Unless you experience some life changing event or just straight out decide to actually get serious (again, really rare), you're doomed to progress slowly and die before you can reach the level you want. I pray that you can prove me wrong.

I'm scared to participate in this thread.
My resolve to keep trying is already tenuously thin without me reflecting on how little I've accomplished for how old I am.

Same boat.
The only consolidation I can give myself is that at least at my age I haven't spent just over a decade since when I was a kid actively drawing (when my only dream was to be an artist as an adult) every day building terrible habits and symbol drawing and instead can look for good study material to absorb. Hell, I'm still trying to break out of symbol drawing, though I haven't been serious for too long.
But I do feel you. Just remember everyone has their own reasons for where they are, had my highschool years turned out differently I'd be a lot different - I might've continued drawing daily and have lots of confidence in my abilities but I could also be doing it terribly wrong. Can only look forward, I suppose.

Fuck it, I'll do this thread.

I've started changing the way I draw already, and I've already been making greater improvement than I normally do. Art has changed from a hobby to a passion, but slowly. I doubt this is the upper limit of my attitude and work ethic though, I know I can do a lot better, it's just that I really need to be medicated for the issues I have. It's why I do adderall when I can, I just have very little access to it. I know that it's rare, but just the very idea that I can do it is enough for me. I'll know by the time I actually settle into independence. Because of this is actually my upper limit, I'm legit killing myself. Because this is a problem that bleeds into every facet of my life. Git gud or die. I guess I'll see in the next year or so.
