no, it's a made-up goddess. i guess of love/beauty. birds and hand symbols seem too predictable though, it wouldn't make it more interesting. i want her to somehow be interacting with something else in the piece before i start to render it.. again not birds though

I like it, there's lots of details that you have going on that fits in well, especially with the face area.

What I would suggest is maybe draw in maybe a rock for him to stand on and draw in some shadows and shading to give this picture some depth and to show the legs underneath the fur kilt.

>> No.3401638

there's a couple of things here, the first is that there's a whole lot of detail in the torso compared to the rest of her body, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

And with the leg... I think you're talking about the left leg. It looks like the ankle is dislocated because the foot is pointing WAY out to the sides. What I would do is fix up the foot, have the heel be visible and the foot facing more towards where the kneecap is pointing.

Otherwise decent job.

It is supposed to look like Kali or perhaps Ravana, yes. I used the lotus specifically because a nuclear explosion always reminded me of a lotus flower, and plus the nuclear bomb sprouting from the lotus shows the awesome power of nuclear technology, in this case in the hands of Chaos manifested as the Fat Man bomb.

I'm curious also as to how you think I'm "stealing shit and putting it together mindlessly"?

They meant you weren't putting thought into your design, especially because you seemed to take inspiration from existing mythology without being very educated on what you were drawing.
It really does look like you grabbed a random Eastern god and gave them a lotus to hold. I never would have gotten 'evocative of a mushroom cloud' from that; maybe you could have the lotus blossoming up behind them or something.

I don't understand that. It is supposed to resemble some features of Kali and some of Ravana, precisely because they are both fearsome beings and powerful. I then fused this with the idea of a particularly evil asura to create this creature, giving it he name Ifset, or the primal force of chaos in Egypt. So I did not draw without thought or mindlessly. Had I done that, I would have simply copied Kali and given her a bomb, or copied Shiva in the same manner from other art. So I still don't understand how I did it without thought, and I certainly dont feel as though I'm "stealing shit"

try an get a solid underdrawing for your next one, the hands appear to be different sizes, and lots of little perspective wobbles going on

>>3403565
Try ref/tracing

>>3403639
Colors are strange. Is there a reason for his skin to be the same colors as his armor? the color of the fabric seems to be strange too.

Was it a colorized grayscale image?

Speculate highlights are a bit ambiguous as far as where the light source is.

Would recommend grabbing ref for metal and fabric in the lighting scheme you’ve created

>>3403671
can’t give feedback on this, what are you looking for feedback on?

>>3403696
get anatomy ref, define a light source. You shouldn’t be zoomed in rendering without having the structure be solid.

Why is there a shadow being cast to the left so harshly, while the forms you painted are not being lit from the right?

What is your goal with this piece? if you absolutely want to make a polished image at your skill level- grab a 3d model, pose the figure how you want, add the lighting and paint ontop. Or use a ton of reference and really take time to redraw and plot your highlights and shadows early.

>>3403733
Cute! I’d be careful for the tangent with the title and the figure.

>>3403749
You desperately need to study value. You’re too heavy handed with blacks. It looks like you took a grayscale image and blasted the contrast outward. Also you should plot your light source out because the forms are not indicating to me where the light is coming from at all (bra is lit from bottom, yet area under chin casts shadow, lighting from the top etc.

Remember to think about where the light is when painting

>> No.3407976

Pretty rendering! I’m not entirely sure where the light is coming from, but I don’t think is breaking the picture or anything, just autistic nitpicky things

>>3399841
Pretty sweet! The speculate highlights seem a bit confusing, you’ve got them on the right side of the shield, which isn’t indicating the same lighting as where the shadows and other highlights are at. Nitpicky af tho looks neat

>>3399889
Lighting seems inconsistent. Also the robbed figures at the bottom sortve “crop” the image. Maybe indicating some light bleeding through the crowds to separate the shapes, while directing the light compositionally back toward the skull boob girl thing

>>3399907

>> No.3408017

>>3400599

>>3400617

Have you tried working with a colored underpainting? It’s hard to paint color ontop of bw without it muddying out. Also remember you can check values with proof setup

There’s some guides out on ao to color, but probably better to just get more mileage in working straight to color. Long form still life in color will help, and just general mileage and observation. If you want a shortcut just render a 3d model with the lighting you’d prefer and use it as a guide.

>>3401135
The effects you toss on after look pretty cheesy; lots of perspective and lighting issues being covered up by my style.jpeg. To each their own though, but you would benefit from observational drawing/painting.

>>3401372
spend more time constructing/underdrawing, the forms are kind of wonky. You’d benefit a bunch from doing some still life. Would reccomend one with fabrics, glass and metals, because you’re having a rough time conveying material and general color/light.

Trying new rendering techniques

>> No.3408424

So with color it’s nice to maybe think in “base color” of a material, and then factor in the temperature of the light source.

A diffused object being lit will typically shift *towards* the color of the light source, and as it recedes it will shift away. So as the form moves from highlight to shadow the hues are constantly shifting. The issue right now is the colorizing technique you used looks as though the hues are not shifting, but instead are just being darkened with a gray.

I don’t into specular colors, but you can cheat it in a program like blender by rendering out sphere with a similar lighting setup to your image (very simple and well worth doing)- and then drop the material sphere into ps as a guideline for how your light will behave. 3d programs are great for painters because you can do little isolated experiments and create your own lighting refs very easily.

Well i used to do (really amateur) realist / photorealist graphite and carbon art, where you need to focus in an area, and when it looks similar enough to the photo, you move on to the next area. It's hard to get used to more "traditional" painting, where fidelity to reality is not that importat (like the artists you recommended me, while their paintings look realistic enough, you can easily still tell that they are paintings).

I think you are right, if I paint from life or if i limit my "working time" I don't have time to focus on small details. Thanks for the advice.

This is the "finished" one tho >>3403764 I spend about 3 hours painting it.

This is another study i painted in less time (about 1 hour), i used bigger brush strokes and tried to keep it simple. What do you think about this one?

It is not. I was decent at realism when i was a teen so i kinda got used to do only that style. I stoped drawing for a couple of years (because of uni and some other stuff that took my time), but i got a wacom draw last month and started drawing again.

> What are your artistic goals?

I don't know, i'm pretty new to the "art world". I draw / paint as a hobbie, so i know i could never be as good as some of the people that post here and do art professionally, but i would like to get better and learn how to do different styles.

Well all that you’re doing right now is learning to get better at copying photographs. If you’d like a really good foundation then you should focus really heavily on perspective and lighting simple forms. that foundation will allow you the framework to draw anything and paint it (without just copying photographs)

Do you have any examples of your years of color studying? Whenever people speak in years I’m inclined to think that you did a 2 hour still life maybe once every 4 months. Put a good chunk of time into a few, and aim for 1:1 as much as possible.

Lots of smaller color studies are helpful to.

http://www.huevaluechroma.com

You can try this as a color resource because it covers everything you need about learning realistic lighting. (After you have a comfortable grasp of realistic lighting feel free to play around as you see fit, breaking rules and whatnot)

but I feel you are vastly underestimating the amount of mileage good colorists put in to achieving their colors. There’s a reason why so many artists that do colorkeys/color scripts happen to do a ton of plein air and life studies.

>> No.3409160

>>3409133
I have that page bookmarked, I've read it several times. I took 3 semesters of painting where practically all we did were still lifes and studies and I painted on my own outside of that whenever I could. From time to time I'd take colored pencils outside and try sketching things from the environment. I've done dozens of digital paintings from photos and in fact I'm working on one right now. The problem was even if I could get things to look right in the studies, when I tried to color my own illustrations they were all horrible. I bookmarked that page and a bunch of other resources I got from here last year to start learning actual color theory and applying it mentally after years of coloring from reference didn't seem to be helping. I just post here for unbiased eyes to make sure things look as okay as I think.

And just to clarify, all of that was spread out over the last 5 or 6 years. I probably could have done way more but I did them fairly often.
I'm not abandoning studies either. The one I'm working on now is turning out way better than any of the ones I did before and I think it's because I've been reading up on color theory and putting it into practice. I think now when I do studies I'll actually get something from them. I also think I need to keep doing the ones without reference to keep from being dependent on it.

do you have examples? 3 terms of painting at a college doesn’t sound like a lot, unless its at a good art school where they’re really pushing you.

the image you posted showed you were having some issues with showing form with value, the forms appear to flatten and they appear to be a bit ambiguous on the lighting.

I have some examples but I don't think there's really a point posting them. If I didn't do enough the answer is do more. If I did do enough, trying something new is the answer. Either way I'm doing both. Plus I'd have to gather the studies and a bunch of the drawings I tried to color by myself for you to really see the disconnect that was happening.
Anyway thank you for the note about pushing value and form, I will work on that and thanks for recommending these artists. I know it's going to take some time and honestly I don't think I'll ever be one of those artists known for their amazing color but comparing the replies I got on this to ones I've posted before I can tell I finally made some progress.

so did the scolding work, and all the shitters went back to /beg/?

the standard on this thread has been outstanding lately. and it seems a lot more positive, too.

it looks like you're working with a 2H pencil, get a softer pencil and then focus on drawing like a sculptur a bit more, and youll notice hella difference. Check this vid out.

love it, though i dislike the purple AND blue;
it seems like they are fighting, try and take one closer to the tone of the other, otherwise it looks like they are just fighting.

I just started drawing and my Friends are either not interested in art or just overly positive. I'd be glad if someone could give me some feedback.
I think my art is too sketchy and there is something wrong with their face proportions.

No degeneracy here most of the times.

This is great, but what the hell is wrong his her forearms? Are they made of jelly? I'm serious, do those arms have something to do with the character, because they are very fucked up compared to everything else. There goes a redline, but I'm still not sure if you need it, because you clearly know how to draw. Or maybe you can just draw hot faces and you're lacking anatomy. Idk

I prefer the bird. It has clearer shapes, brighter colors and some stylisation. This is just edgy tattoo art
