Did you know that there's an italian guy named Roberto Ferrari drawing animu art at Square Enix?
He worked as a character design on FFXV and is currently working on the (doomed) FFVII Remake along with Tetsuya Nomura.
He's the guy who designed pic related.

Now that jap companies are hiring filthy gaijins who draw anime then what's your excuse for not making it big in Japan?
Don't you wanna follow your dreams?

we'll he's one of the reasons why FFXV flopped. I'm not saying "Japanese companies should hire only Japanese people!" that's bs, there are extremely talented westerners out there living in JP and doing fantastic innovative work. He is not one of them though, while his work kinda sucks (that torso tho), his demeanor and personality are his biggest issues. After the shit he spouted about FFXV's development process, he's lucky if he'll ever get a job at some e-tier development studio in nipland.

He's still working on Square Enix.
He's the character designer for the FFVII Remake.

OK, I am already pro (freelance), but I always wanted to try working for Japanese studio.

I already lived in Japan for couple months (I speak the language, have N2 cert), so I know what I would be getting into except I don't know if Japanese game studios are organized the same way as most of offices in that country- tons of unpaid overtime, not much actual work done. I know asking IC is a bit of a stretch, but anyone here has any experience?

Since I found out more about the working conditions and work-life balance in Japanese game companies, my dream became "draw only to make myself happy while earning enough for a living". I'm not sure I want to be famous, even. Doesn't seem like it'll bring more happiness than following on personal goals and the subsequent feeling of progress and growth.

OK, thanks for your answer.

Hope you don't mind answering more questions.

Do I need University degree to get a Work Visa, or is a company usually willing to go extra mile to make it happen if I am good enough to land a job skill wise?

Is it true Japanese game companies still are more 2D oriented and don't rely on 3D workflow in concept art compared to western companies?

Should I push myself to pass N1 test, or they don't care and N2 is enough? Or maybe it's the other way- N1 is still not enough?

Any tips on how to prepare portfolio for Japanese market? Is there any difference from applying to western company?

I can always get a tourist visa and live and work in Japan half of the year, and then come back to my country for another half, but I don't know.

Gaijins have been making it in the videogame and animation industries in Japan for a while now. The real deal was when Boichi made it into the manga industry, I think he was one of the first foreigners (if not the first) to actually make it there, doing manga, alongside japanese creators. And it was making manga, not being marketed as "foreign comics" and having some success.

Although to be honest, these days anime is mostly made in Vietnam and the Koreas (yes, North included).

The game shipped around 7m copies globally as of January of this year.
The game's director said at one point that it needed to sell 10m just to recoup costs. Then, official interviews announced that the game actually made a profit and was a "great success".

One thing is for sure, it sold less than the previous entry FFXIV, at 10.9m sold.

>Do I need University degree to get a Work Visa, or is a company usually willing to go extra mile to make it happen if I am good enough to land a job skill wise?

AFAIK, you absolutely need university degree for any kind of work visa. Unless you're so rich you can just show them the money for enterpreneur one. But why would you want to work there in that case. Or you can marry a Japanese, visa problem solved. For a company to want to pull you into Japan from abroad, you have to be an art god that they just must have, among the sea of amazing Japanese artists. But what legal acrobatics they'll need to make to sponsor work visa if you don't have a higher education degree, I can't imagine. But don't believe me if you want, search online for what are the visa requirements, maybe you'll find something different.

>Is it true Japanese game companies still are more 2D oriented and don't rely on 3D workflow in concept art compared to western companies?
Seems like it, but how should I know, I never got into any company.

>Should I push myself to pass N1 test, or they don't care and N2 is enough? Or maybe it's the other way- N1 is still not enough?
I have N2 but I feel I'm lacking in communication. N2 is like a basic requirement that'll make them look at your CV. I wouldn't say N1 is needed for work, unless you intend to do localizations instead of art (which is something companies do need and Japanese people rarely can provide). In general, the better you are at Japanese, the easier it'll be for you to work and understand what you need. But if you manage to get N1, that'll open doors, it's difficult even for Japanese, I've heard.

>Any tips on how to prepare portfolio for Japanese market? Is there any difference from applying to western company?
Not one to talk since I didn't get in. But out of 15 companies only 1 (small) returned any feedback, in the form of printouts I gathered to be of the things they liked. Since they never give you a reason why you didn't make the cut, I appreciated it. One more feedback I got, but it was directly from the HR person I managed to meet personally, so there - connections work best everywhere.

>I can always get a tourist visa and live and work in Japan half of the year, and then come back to my country for another half, but I don't know.
I thought tourist visa is 3 months only. Unless you plan for a weekend trip to Korea, as some people do. Keep in mind working without proper visa is illegal, so even if you're not worried about the immigration authorities, a proper company wouldn't employ you on it. Also, you'd have to be a freelancer, as no company would let you be on a prolonged holiday like that.
