>if you are able to sell something that is practically useless, that useless thing is defined as art. So art is something otherwise useless that you are able to sell
definition I got from some guide from a national art museum. However, I would rather define art as something that expresses a feeling to an audience

Visual Art is anything that was made with the intention to communicate a message or make you feel things. If you've made a great big doodoo on a plate and are calling it art then you've made art. Probably bad art, in my opinion, but still.
Anyone getting upset about postmodernism is probably doing it because the concept of art in general shits all over their idea of meritocracy and they're dealing with the cognitive dissonance that comes with that.
Anyone romanticizing when "art used to be something to cherish" should look at tity on cave wall and shit like that from wheneverthefuck B.C.

I think art is anything which somehow communicates with you in order to make you think or feel a certain way. The thing is, as long as you're able to observe or experience ANYTHING, your brain is constantly processing it and reacting to it-- you're constantly being "communicated to" in some way and you're constantly thinking and feeling. That's why the word "art" is completely meaningless in my opinion.

A rock is not art. A rock, presented by an author to an audience, is art. 'Art' doesn't mean 'good', there's well made and poorly made art, it's not complicated.

Actually, a rock is art. Go find the nearest piece of rock and throw it at my face. It's my new performance.

Whatever definition there is for classical art, art as it is now is defined solely be secondarily characteristics of it.

For example, classical art tends to be on a canvas, it can indicate the artist's emotions, it's shown off in galleries, it can be sold for high prices. These are what modern art is defined by. "It's in a gallery and on a canvas, that means it's art!" or "he put emotion into it, that means it's art!".

Think of every aspect of art that is not part of its intrinsic definition and you'll find the definition of modern art.

Art isn't some status to attain, it just means something isn't a natural process or created for pure practicality. Even with the latter, there's exceptions.

Being art doesn't mean an illustration or sculpture is any less shitty. One is a discipline, the other is human nature.

>> No.3394377

Why does this garbage question about art always comes up when 99% of people on here just want to attain high technical skills.

>> No.3394386

>>3394377
When you want to attain high technical skills the idea that "less skilled" art could be more valued than yours can be a source of insecurity, which is the same reason we get people fucking livid that someone draws tumblr style and has followers and whatever else. Same shit.

What people really want when they post these threads is the reassurance that "yeah man that art is shit what we're doing is the real way to go bro we're the last bastion in TRUE art ur not wasting your time" because it's apparent next to nobody here actually enjoys the process of creating at all and they can't go on without assigning that value to what they're doing.

Nobody denies that film is a legitimate artform - what's stopping a short looped film from being art too?

minimalism is an art form to make you feel as little as possible, it's almost like a fetish among art buffs. Although art is usually something made by an individual, as well as something just picked up from the side of the street with the "anti-art" movement

>> No.3395573

A reproduction of God's creation by man, therefore a piece of art is better the closer it is to God or so to speak.
