I envy these people that can stick to a piece and do it to the end despite obvious shortcomings.
I get too self aware and never commit to anything.
How do i allow myself to fail and learn ?

Strangely enough i've suffered through that stress since Childhood. I remember trying to copy the cover for the matrix vhs and doing ok till i tried to do some stupid weapon keanu held in his hands and failed. Everyone told me how cool the drawing was but i knew that it didn't work but i didnt understand why.
I got so frustrated i just threw it away and didnt touch a pencil for a while.

My point is ive always been insecure or somewhat self aware. Even if i do have somewhat of a grasp of fundamentals i'm almost a cripple when it comes to doing anything for real and not some study

I have drawn my whole life, it's always been my passion. Here's a bit of my progress

2007/2008: was a literal full blown weeaboo kid (12 yo) saying things like "baka KAWAII DESU >w< on DeviantArt. Yeah, it's pretty embarassing

2010: started taking things more seriously, studied tutorials, still very weeaboo but with more dignity

Then high-school happened, started drawing waaaay less, but still doodle here and there.

During college I stopped drawing completely, which is funny because I was studying Design.

After finishing college I reignited my passion and decided to start making some money from my art. HUGE improvement in a very short amount of time, thanks to better tutoriais and a more mature mindset.

Now I basically only draw porn. I feel like I don't doodle much, I only ever post finished pieces, which I don't know if it's a good thing or bad.

First I focused on the basic shapes (construction), to make my drawings less flat and more "3D". Before, I would never sketch anything out, just go directly into lineart and the countour of the form, instead of focusing on the building blocks

The second turning point was *actually* studying anatomy from real life (medical anatomy, etc) to really understand where each muscle was. I'm still not perfect at this, so I rely a lot on REFERENCES. You seriously need references. Not other drawings, but photos. I never tried being too realistic, I went straight from translating the reference photo to stylization, but I understand that's not a popular approach here on /ic/. I did it by figuring out what did change between realism and anime, and what doesn't change.

At the same time, I also studied color theory a lot. Basic stuff like not shading with black, complementary colors, etc. This is one of the key parts in making things appealing.

Right now in the present I'm working on gesture and making my poses more fluid and less stiff.

Doodles can help you draw a little faster imo but its also good to get a finished product as well.

Proko is very good. Don't even need to pay, his free videos on YouTube are great. He covers everything in anatomy and figure drawing.

I definitely feel I regressed/stagnated in 2015/2016, and in 2017 I wasn't in a position to actually use my tablet for most of the year, so that's fair. There's a lot of really wonky stuff from '14/'15 that I didn't put in, and leaving those out definitely makes my output look a lot more stagnant than were they in.
I mostly just do pixel art, though, so maybe that would've been a better way of showing progression?

Your current style isn't my particular dish (long skinny limbs aren't appealing to me but I get what you're going for) but it/s really cool to see how different aspects of your art change and improve over time. It's hard because I think there appear to be some 'dips in quality' where really you're just sticking your neck out to learn new skills which is kinda necessary in art.

I think more recent years you've focused a lot more on imagination stuff and most recently seems like dynamic posing/composition seems to be your focus. I might spend a bit more time with references/copies like you used to, I think it made your imagination stuff really shine.

The way I see it painting/drawing/music/working out/etc is an eternal struggle, the excitement before doing; then you hit a wall and the self-doubt setting in, then you overcome it just barely. After that it's back to the beginning again. A bit depressing but remember that you always come out a slightly better person after every struggle.
