IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>Contemplate your finished drawings. Define the faults. Dont fix them. Make the faults into your style or hide them behind the smart use of photoshop filters and transparencies. It will give personality to your work.

>Refrain from reading Loomis, its a waste of time, there are much better and faster youtube tutorials

most people just wing it. if you do it enough eventually you'll develop a feel for it.

it's one of the two. autistically measure or do a shit ton of practice. a combination of both is good too but I prefer just do it a lot until I get a feel for it. It works for me maybe not so much for others.

You slowly internalize proportions by drawing for months upon months upon months lad. You can probably reduce it to months upon months if you do focused studies.

That's the trick.

>> No.3380393

>>3380360
In all honesty, learning proportions is a matter of memorizing the relationships in the basic shapes of a human.

For example, if you simplify the torso, head, and hips into oval shapes and use the height of the head as the standard you should get proportions along the line of the torso being 1.5x as tall as the head, the hips being 1.0x as tall as the head etc... It varies by body types, it varies by gender. Ultimately you want to gather proportions for the cylinders that define the hands, the feet, the arms, legs. You might want to narrow down muscle groups by the proportions they take up in their respective body parts. The trick is understanding the basic shapes and learning to manipulate them to whatever angle you wish and ensuring they stay proportionally equivalent.

Here is my large attempt at drawing in perspective. Obviously there are mistakes where I tried to not use a straight edge. (The middle lines). And my pencil control is terrible because I think I use too much wrist/forearm when I'm drawing small lines. One day at a time, though I'm really only sharing it just to uncomfortably put myself out there. That's how you get better, right? I've only tried my hand at pixel art once, and I used fire alpaca. It allows you to draw a sketch layer underneath the layer that you are going to draw your pixel art on. Making any finished art before drawing a preliminary sketch isn't a good practice. You'll be able to bang out pixel art without sketching first once you've gotten a lot more practice.

Also, you'll be able to capture depth a lot better if you block out the shading in the sketching phase.

Hope that helps!

Pixel-art is sort of like inking/coloring, in that it comes after the sketching process. Learning the fundamentals of traditional art will give you a better base to polish with pixel art, so learning the two alongside one another would probably prove highly beneficial.

Loomis is very good for learning how to draw people. If you plan on making pixelated sprites for characters, I'd highly recommend Loomis for learning the fundamentals.

I've seen way worse. I'm a couple months in, and while I occasionally make stuff that almost looks acceptable, the feeling doesn't really go away.

I think it comes down to just thinking about lines, angles and shapes rather than whatever your trying to draw, at least for observational drawing. I can be drawing a hand and I don't actually "see" it as a hand until I'm completely finished. Until that point its just a bunch of lines and shapes that I'm trying to get the right proportions for. Once you get in that mindset, you won't be caught up in how it looks part way through and just start drawing.

My personal recommendation of a book to start with is Keys to Drawing though. I started with right side of the brain also, but its is a bit too pseudo psychological for me, and I was having trouble taking it seriously after a few chapters. It also takes a very long time to explain things that could really be summed up in a sentence or two, so it didn't end up teaching me a whole lot, although some of the early exercises are very good like this one.

Couple of things - and don't fly off in a tantrum, this is serious advice:

Stop using black for shadows. It looks awful. Skin rarely has black in it, especially caucasian skin. LOOK at skin, and the colors in it, the warms and the cools, and start painting with those. Black instantly flattens out anything, and you're in direct opposition to what you're trying to do here. Color, value, and shape are all visual clues to indicate to the viewer what they're looking at, and you're flattening out what is supposed to be a 3 dimensional object.

Second, stop painting on a black background. It's too contrasty for the subject, and overwhelms the eye, and blows out the contrasts overall for the image. Paint on a neutral background, either a color that becomes near a 50% grey when converted to B&W, or is actually 50% grey. 50% grey is the least influential on the eye. Pick a color that is slightly contrasted to the skin tones you'll be working with, and ties in with the cooler colors. Starting in the midtones lets you establish your white point and black points in your values within the subject, and then you can also work on your color values the same way.

Your actual subject is okay, it could use more refinement, especially with edges, and implied contour, like on the nose. This is basically an underpainting, work on it more to define the shape better. You're on the right track, but you're setting the same values for different planes of space on the figure, and you need to push it more - whiter whites, and darker shadows, to "pop" the face - the values of the nose and eye sockets will be different from the forehead and the jaw, when they occupy differing planes of space within the composition - it's subtle, but you need to work more on that. Overall the shape is fine, but it needs a lot more refinement, and proper use of color for skin. This is why I recommend DrawMixPaint - he's teaching oils, but he's also teaching how to see color.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Two feet in one day? The fucking madman, that's like 5 or 6 hours of feet. The guy must have some sort of fetish or something." I will neither confirm nor deny that.

But really, I'm starting to see the diminishing returns of drawing for this long in one day. While I didn't like the first one right after I finished it, looking at it now it might be my favorite so far. This one on the other hand is just kind of sucky. The proportions are worse, the shading is lazier, and it's just generally less precise.

I could have been low-balling a bit, but I don't think it would be too much longer than 3 hours, but these are still the early plates which are relatively simple. The time has been going up with complexity.

I do like 20-30 minutes to sketch out the proportions and shadows. Another 20-30 minutes to smooth out sketch lines into curves. An hour or so drawing shadow shapes and shading, and maybe 30-minutes to an hour on half tones and cleanup. I don't even really know what I would spend more time doing.

Start off with construction of simple shapes. Once you can make rectangles and circles you can combine them to construct the basis for a perfect hand.
