Want some real advice? First thing make sure that your knowledge of perspective is very strong.(perspective made easy) Know how to construct simple 3d objects in perspective and how to rotate them and cast their shadows. You can learn that in Scott robertsons how to render. That's the easy part.

Now pick a subject that you can find alot of references for. animals people buildings cars planes. Draw them alot and learn why they are the way they are along the way. Form studies mean drawing the simplest/most essential version of the thing and then paying attention to where and how you can deform or customize it. In the case for people/animals you will want to study anatomy alongside your form studies. Ecorche is the way to go. I recommend michael hampyons design and invention. After that you just start from tje beginning because you DEFINITELY missed something and thats why your drawings might still suck after this point. Rinse and repeat.

General rule of thumb, only take advice from people who post their work or do redlines.

I'm still a shitter but I'm happy with how I'm coming along and the thing that has helped my mindset the most is collecting artbooks and pictures from my favorite artists as inspiration, flipping throuhg a book of Heinrich Kley or Yoh Yoshinari's work is inspiring. As for practical steps, look at the artists you admire, figure out what it is they do that you want to do, and then draw those things from life, I personally like to finish every life drawing session with somthing from imagination while the reference is still fresh in my mind.

Just realize that /ic/ is not DeviantArt or Instagram, people here have anonymity, so if you act like a dumb cunt and ignore the sticky, they'll feel free to call you out on it. Also, for the love of god, don't listen to every single thing random strangers say, find your own way and settle on whatever suits you best... On the other hand, if someone HAS to shit on your art, thank the heavens it's loser permavirgins on the internet and not a potential employer. Now go draw.

I never said anything about fundamentals nor did I call them a meme, what a knee-jerk reaction.
Fundamentals are just something you apply when making art; If you don't know the proper process for applying them, (and the process varies for every program floating around) you still aren't going to have good art. The good artists only release speedpaints that show process; have fun trying to learn HOW to use a program from sped-up footage without any commentary, or vaguely annotated step-by-step shit. Even in traditional media; I learned a depth of colour theory before I even knew the concept of a watercolour wash, and can barely paint in traditional or digital. And god forbid you learn to paint in anything that isn't photoshop; you'll have to listen to social-anxiety art thots poorly explain what their teacher explained to them, to you.
The best artists worked directly under masters, and what a great fucking idea that was.

Anon, let me tell you a secret. As a learning artist this board is shit will only hinder you. I'll give you this Neil Gaiman quote to help illustrate my point.

this is probably the best community for learning art other than have connections with pros anon. Find someplace better

>> No.3377206

I spent almost an entire year just figuring out what to study, constantly jumping from a book or video lesson to another, in the end I managed to sort things out, I started noticing some patterns and understood what I'm really interested in.

While /ic/ is a shithole constantly filled with idiots, weebs and cucks trying to mislead you it genuinely helped me a lot, thanks to it I discovered a huge variety of artists and resources which really expanded my vision on this whole industry and career.

For example, my main goal is to learn how to draw from imagination, becoming a concept artist or illustrator would be my goal and I noticed how all the artists who seem to be really good at it (KJG, Peter Han, Feng Zhu, Scott Robertson) put a great emphasis on perspective, construction and understanding 3D volumes. Afterwards by getting more profecient at it I started to notice what I need and repeated the process: looked at artists that have the skill that I need and learned from their books and courses.

Meanwhile my local art school just put me in front of a bust/model and told me to draw it following the sapes which despite being useful wouldn't have helped me half as much compared to understanding the volumes and perspective.

Are there any boards out there anywhere that anyone here could recommend? I'd love to find an acrylic board where amateurs posted their stuff and discussed.

here's one i did - I suck but I do it because i enjoy it, not trying to be a pro or even public.

I also did highlights with UV paint so it looks cool with black light. hanging in my bedroom.

The only thing I really want an answer to is what do I draw? I get I need to be drawing but choosing what subject to focus on, and what to actually draw to focus on that subject is overwhelming. Just drawing anything won't help you improve at a steady rate.

just a moronic beginner but maybe draw whatever you are worst at drawing?

if you suck at faces, draw faces

if you suck at landscapes and perspectives, draw that... you get the idea.

take something you have already drawn that you like and draw it from a different perspective...

just off the top of my head...

btw what do you think of >>3377502
gimme your two cents worth.. it's a scan of acrylic so some artifacts in there that are not really there. like the fucking lower outline of the eye is not seen irl. just the way the scanner did.

I'll post a really bad pic of it under UV if anyone is interested...

post something bro..

/ic/ is just a whole pile of shitty content with chunks of good stuff. If you know how to filter through and what you can expect you can actually get some good content. Sometimes just coming here and seeing some great painting from whatever digital artist motivates me to go back to work. Sometimes some few gems or learning material get posted that helps me overcome some struggles.

But really, most of the learning should be away from this shit of a place.
