I'm going to step in here and say something about this real quick.

I think I'm going to have to put a restriction on lolicon stuff.

In Japan, it's legal, but in US, it's complex enough that things can get a bit tangled.

That would be bad enough, but there are several countries where accessing that sort of content alone that can lead to imprisonment (i.e. Canada), which means that anyone who view the site with the nsfw filter on "Explicit" can effectively get fucked entirely.

So, I'm taking the stance here: please don't post it here. I don't think it's worth the potential legal hassle and risk to other DAD users.

Sure. Just bear in mind that ultimately I'll be making the final judgment call on all of this, but it's not like I'm actively monitoring every single submission.

I'm pretty laissez-faire when it comes to this stuff after spending pretty much a decade on 4chan, but as soon as it becomes a legal/hosting problem, everyone will be notified, the relevant submissions will be removed, and policies will be updated accordingly.

Hopefully, that's acceptable. I'm trying to ensure the longevity of this site, and I want to avoid any potential pitfalls.

The following quality-of-life fixes has been pushed out to the site:

> CRITICAL: Fixed a bug with the elimination handler that would've eliminated non-daily participants on the first day of their submission period if they did not submit (should not have impacted anyone yet).
> IMPORTANT: Submission form now automatically populates with your chosen post frequency if you are currently actively participating in DAD, rather than just being "Daily" by default.
> IMPORTANT: Fixed issue where submission form would break if uploaded file was too large.
> Site next-day timer no longer freaks out at 00:00 GMT.
> Fixed performance of daily elimination and score handler.
> File size error now accurately reflects 2.5 MB limit instead of saying 25 MB.

I'm going to get some exercise, draw, then pump out more fixes and site improvements.

3372834

Not posting this on DAD since this was something I did this about three months ago and it wouldn't be right to post it there.

We had a secret santa thing in the Discord where we traded physical pieces of art. The recipient mentioned a dream in which he and a "dinosaur person" sailed to a tropical island on a boat, so I figured I'd use that as the subject to paint so that the gift, if a bit incompetently done, could still have some personal and emotional resonance with the recipient. I had never done watercolor paints before, and it shows.

It's not good. It's really not good. I know that much. It's as primitive in execution as it is earnest, an endeavor akin to a dim-witted puppy trying to impress its owner. Still, I had attempted to apply every bit of spiritual strength and knowledge I had to make something. There's a reasonably strong application of perspective (which I was extensively studying before drawing.today went down).

The point I'm trying to make is that, as bad as I am now, I would have been much worse had LAS not been around. It's given me a community and a motivating framework that encourages the journey rather than the destination. I used to be absolutely shit, now I'm just very shit, but at least now I have the courage to undertake such an endeavor, whereas three years ago, I would've picked up a pencil, half-heartedly render something from reference, cry internally, and stop altogether for two months only to begin again, lamenting the time I wasted. To this, I owe Lava and w my eternal gratitude.

This is but one emotional fragment of what LAS means to me, and why the project and you all mean so much to me.

You fucked up the frequency and scoring.
Why set it to every 6 days when you said "once a week"? With the current configuration, it's only possible to get 7 points, while the badge requires a total of 30.

I don't think this kind of thing works well under the current system. I would suggest splitting it into two challenges:
>Mecha Design Challenge: WIP
Where you're expected to post a progress report once a week. Post frequency once a week, score required is the number of weeks the challenge is running. Make sure to make it end on the same weekday or a weekday later, I'm not quite sure how the current system is gonna handle weekly scores just yet.
>Mecha Design Challenge: Final Submissions
This one should be [number of designs] days long, frequency daily - victory lap. Only issue with this would be that people might have the designs ready beforehand so they're kinda covered for 6 days of las.

Honestly, I think 6 mechas AND 6 pilots (+ whatever props etc) is way overkill. I'd start with one mecha plus pilot, maybe two, and see how that goes first. I think it would be much more interesting to instead give more specific requirements, i.e. character must have an alternate outfit, show the mech from two angles, mech in action vs stationary, mech with signs of wear, show a special function of the mech - stuff like that.
Needless to say, if you decide to reduce the number of designs to one, the suggestion for split challenges is moot.

Copying photos is fine if you want to make sure that you know your medium well - you'll quickly find out if you have trouble with getting edges sharp enough or smooth gradients or can you get proper values. But if someone knows those things (like the guy I criticized), then you won't get much better by doing them.
In that case it's better to focus on drawing from imagination (personal projects) and use photos only as a reference. If you're not comfortable with drawing from imagination, then study perspective.

I've spent way too much time learning how to copy photos, and it didn't improve my drawing from imagination skills at all. As you can see, I suck at them. I know that I sound bitter, but I just don't want others to repeat my mistakes.

Would adding a "critique appreciated/wanted" flair that can be toggled during submission and is visible from the submitted page be an easy thing for banana to implement and combat people feeling un-mentioned? Currently, the only way to change your streak is by submission, so if you want to change it, the next submission you make, set the frequency to something else.
If you're going from something easier to something harder, then no penalty occurs. If you're going from something harder to something easier, your streak is reset to 1.

Currently, you can only change your streak at submission time, but I'll put in a button under the user settings really soon so that people can change it ad hoc, if there's demand for that.

It have pushed me to draw for more hours than I thought I'm capable of, but I feel like I'm producing shittier works.

I'm not sure if my lack of skill just becomes more pronounced because I'm pumping out works with less time inbetween or that the streak counter is constricting me in some way.

But on the other hand I'm actually a bit happier because DAD have given me clearer boundaries and goals, making focusing on working a lot easier

Can I have advice from lassies that experienced similar things? Should I loosen up my streak goals? Or should I just keep pushing through?

Sorry for blog.

>> No.3373795

As someone who has drawn absolute shit for the first year I participated in LAS, trust me when I say just keep pushing through.

You shouldn't feel bad for putting out shitty work because by participating and making a habit out of this, you're taking definitive steps towards getting better. You're making an effort. And that's what counts. What DAD/LAS/DED all try to get you to do is to get into the habit of drawing regularly.

You might improve slowly, you might improve quickly. But nothing changes if you just stop.

If you're concerned about not putting out good work every day, keep in mind WIPs are perfectly fine. It's not like you need to pump out a completed piece daily.

Lastly, if life REALLY gets in the way, there's nothing wrong with taking a break and coming back to it.

Another worry that just popped in my mind;
Because of desperation of trying to meet streak goals, I'll force myself to finish a work that is actually fundamentally bad in gesture/composition, instead of scraping it and starting over, because of the deadline closing in.

I guess I can resolve that by like you said, submitting just the WIP that turn out shitty and continue working on something better instead

Still a lot of things I'm not sure of, but I'll keep pushing through this week and see how things will go.

Cath here, I did some corrections for the mecha challenge with Banana's help. The required minimun are now 5 designs, Banana will extend the end date to 11th june so you have more time as well. Description has been rewriten so It's more clear.

"Use your best drawing abilities and get ready to work on character and mechanical design!

-Create at least 5 mechas with their respective pilots.
-You can use any technique you want, but the final illustration must look like a decent polished concept art.
-Each character must show a personality on their own, and so do their mechas.
-There are no creative restrictions about the world these characters are from. You can make aliens, humans, flying futuristic mechas or more grounded in reality robots. Use your imagination.
-At the end you have to make at least 5 submissions. These will be finalized pieces.
-If you have time you can draw more mechas/pilots.
-Have fun

Pic related is an example of what a final submission could look like."

Nice job on those gradients, cdblue. Weakest part of that pic was your anatomy - those are some really wide shoulders, and chest could use more details.
It's shit, go read sticky Dani.
potatoes_spaghetti: right now tops of those bamboo columns are on the eye level. Because of that it's (at least for me) kinda confusing. See that bamboo hole which is in the middle? I don't know from which column it's from. Can you change perspective a bit to make it clearer? Or at least adjust the sky - yellow strongly contrasts with blue sky and it grabs my attention whenever I look at your painting. Love the details though.
I dig your work from today, nka - it looks solid.

Hey there, interested in joining the mecha challenge,
purely because it's an area I've subconsciously avoided, the exception being watching Evangelion lmao.
Please forgive me if I ask some reallly fucking dumb questions.
Might be over thinking entirely, but I want to be strategic about learning.
Don't worry I'll be having fun - the prospect of the challenge excites me. Also starting from scratch, there's no fear of disappointment (yet).

1. Where do you start if you don't have much knowledge about mechanics and robotics?
Is there any single good resource that will cover shit like joints, and valves, etc?

2. How.. organic can mecha be. Going back to Eva, would the mass production Evas count?
I always think of boxy, hard surface designs, but would an older style (eg. think Baroque style armour) robot still be valid, as long as they are piloted?
What do you think about attached pic as a mech design?

3. Open question, wondering what peoples' process are with tackling mecha or new designs in general.
Do you start with silhouettes, written notes, or maybe looking at refs/inspo first?

4. Finally, any recommendations for people who design great mechs?
I realised my character design collection is dominated by cute grills and fantasy, so any sort of refs/inspiration (not just art - photo refs are great too) would be rly appreciated.

Thanks.

Not Cath or anon you're replying too,
but I think the expectation is to post WIPs and show thinking.
The point is to practice/study design and produce portfolio quality pieces and to most importantly, have fun :^)
The designs will probably be discussed, but honestly just ask for crits here anytime.

1.
Take picture of the interior of your car. Otherwise, you will find some book on this thematic in the book thread.
2.
To my mind your attached pic do not represent mech. This being said i wouldn't mind if you post doodles like that.
3.
Transforming daily object is a pretty easy way to go. Your robot could be a tin can with some nuts and a sausage as a pilot if you want.
You can try roschach technic by throwing some random, repetitive shapes. Check robotpencil videos.
4.
Some Zone of the enders designs might look like your picture. There is a mecha thread going on. It might have been archived.

Enjoy.

>manadabes
cute ducks! I particularly like top (the coloring has a nice water color feel), and bottom right which has a bit more dimension. Other wise, they do look flat.

>Fisher
interesting designs, they have a weird and wacky childlike quality, made me think a little of Yuasa's sketches. Since these are kind of all over, I'm curious if you have characters that are drawn as part of a larger series/are more cohesive with one another.

>jozu
nice start - obviously it's a wip, but it looks like you got really stuck into the head and didn't bother with the rest/hand. For the sake of improving and consistency, I recommend going over the whole image in passes. You'll improve your understanding of an overall image/composition, how the human body works as a whole, and how the things all interact with one another, rather than in isolation.

>Batankyuu
it's a good idea to construction lines - even if it's just the basic cross hair over the face so the features are all aligned. Studying 3d anime models/figurines would be a better idea than a 2d image.

>Dani
hmm. I'm not sure if you wanted to accurately copy the original card or draw it in your own style. If the former, do some measuring. Overall, you're getting stuck into details (individual feathers, lines in hair and clothes, detailed fingers) while the overall larger shapes are very weak. Concentrate on the bigger shapes before filling in smaller details.

>Naf
very nice, good sense of form and I like your lines. Do you have any inspirations when it comes to hatching?

>tamosaro
not much to say other than it appeals to me and I am now hungry.

>Lauranne
I see you like demons. The hands are a little small, maybe study male hands since they're looking feminine and petite compared to the face.

Haha yeah. It started out as just reviewing some of the stuff I've been picking up from Olson's lectures, and I figured making some sort of city view was more fun than just making arbitrary squares/boxes.

Tried cleaning it up last night and its just completely sterile now, probably a good time to look into real life architecture a bit.

The big update hasn't been pushed out, but a few important changes have come out:

> CRITICAL: Fixed a bug where someone changing from a easier post frequency to a harder one may get inadvertently eliminated.
> IMPORTANT: A custom timer indicating how long your streak is safe for / how long you have left to submit has been added!

Hopefully the former shouldn't affect you, as streak timings don't change all that much, but I'm glad I caught it when I did.

Personally I (just like any guy that's gonna make it) have set up a daily frequency for DAD. Because of that both timers show the exact same thing which is a bit redundant. In this case I agree with you that 2 timers are too much.
But I'm not sure is it a good idea to delete one of those timers. People that are filthy casuals who draw only once a week may find 2 timers useful.

I actually have a tab open for the daily timer every day, even though I set myself a longer streak-based option for vacations, outages, big pieces, etc. since I don't care about points too much but the overall idea of an unbroken streak is motivating. So I've actually been submitting daily and ignoring official deadlines, but I would absolutely love being able to see both timers relevant to me simultaneously, because if in future I have to switch temporarily to the longer streak-based option, it wouldn't confuse me, jumping back and forth from one to another.
It would be really fantastic if we could have a choice of timers to activate, so both people who work like me and people who'd only like one daily timer would be happy, or if it couldn't be so hands-on, if any badge we are currently in the participant list of could display their own timers where possible, maybe in a list all in one place like where the daily timer displays on the front page now, or wherever.
Man I'm sorry, I know it's much easier to make requests than to fulfill them. Thanks very much for any consideration.

Ideon: Have you read Drawing on the right side of the Brain or Keys to drawing? If not, I would highly recommend you do. The last two Design Cinemas would be worth a watch too.

Nemori: While the design is not earth shattering, it is done well. Even in its rough form, it is very appealing to look at and I like how the head pops out.

Jerry, I can see you're doing good with anatomy but you often mess up proportions really bad. It's been like that for a long time, is drawing making you stressed? Because it looks like you can't fully focus during process. Fundamentals are important, but without right mindset they become useless. Maybe you push yourself too hard mentally? I'd like to help you but I don't know much about you and how do you study. Is drawing boring to you? Do you treat is as a chore? You don't believe in yourself? These are problems you'd be already aware of and try to change though. There might be something really small that hinders your progress

owlsoda, in that position the feet would not be able to be at that angle, make the top of feet facing more to the front. The waist and vag need to be higher up, and the lower body in general needs to be slightly bigger. Otherwise, that is a very qt anime girl, thicc eyebrows are my weakness

Huh. I just realized that Robertson in his How to Draw book doesn't explain how to make a 3 point perspective grid. He tells his readers to simply use an 3d underlay.

Kinda disappointing, but I guess that's how professionals work nowadays.

A large update has been pushed to the site. The changes include:

> IMPORTANT: Fixed a bug where a "Weekly" post frequency cannot be assigned to a challenge.
> IMPORTANT: Fixed a bug where submissions required validation wasn't firing correctly.
> IMPORTANT: User list stuff actually works now.
> IMPORTANT: Challenge display redundancies fixed.
> IMPORTANT: Submissions are viewable by date (you'll have to change the url manually, but a UI option will be available soon)
> Redundant timer removed from home page and submissions.
> Added and updated some text and labels to clarify the submission and scoring logistics of challenges.

Next Up:
User profile page overhaul, including display of badges, submissions, clarity on submission rules, and your user icons looking more... awesome.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to scramble to get 30 minutes of art in to keep my streak.

I think it's time for you to change that avatar; words "I can't draw" clearly don't apply to you any more. I could be nitpicky and point out that your cast shadow on the floor is in the wrong place.

>CoinHero and sleepy
I really dig colours of those pics.
Maybe CoinHero could double check proportions for that figure with some reference; arms look really long to me, and I think that knees are kinda low.

>owlsoda
i-is that a loli?! Drawing underage characters like that can potentially cause some trouble to Banana. I'm not sure is it OK to upload things like that on his server.
Other than that, it's a cute picture, even if her feet have a bit weird shape and eyes have different sizes.

>tabascoshrimp
Coolest bird. I like what you're doing.

>Moirem
Looks solid, it has a nice feel of depth, perspective. Though your character look like very effeminate guys: heads of males put on flat-chested girls. I think it's because of their proportions between stomach and hips. Was that intentional?

>tabascoshrimp

Cause I've got a request, do you recall on LAS we used to have this icon thing next to the frontpage submission box that would tell us whether we'd submitted for the day or not? And the box would be Green for "You've Submitted" and Red for "You Haven't Submitted Yet" (I think?). That'd be nice to add for the future.

Strangely, your submission took for some reason, and you are NOT eliminated. But it glitched out something in the system, evidently.
Something about your entry being made at 00:00:00 precisely caused it to freak out a little bit.

The end result is, while you're not eliminated, your submission period didn't update fully and as a result, your submission counted for DAD, and not the seasonal challenge. Moreover, your next submission will not count towards DAD.

SubCryo, if you have a Discord, please get in contact with me to help me investigate this.
