IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

A new day a new plate. Today's challenge is the infamous feet. I'm less happy with it than I was the ears, but I'm drawing this way bigger than I was so I'll let it slide. Shading gets pretty tedious when your filling most of the page. Getting accurate mid-tones is still a work in progress.

I'm foot man, and I've only been drawing "seriously" for like 4 months? It's just a hobby for me, so like less than 10 hours a week or so, but at the end of the day I'm just drawing a pretty much 1:1 copy of a reference picture, which is like step 0 to drawing and not particularly impressive. If you want to git gud at that, I recommend working through Keys to Drawing followed by the Bargue Drawing Course. It's not like I have some super genetic talent for it. If you put in the work and apply that work efficiently, pretty much anyone can start seeing results.

There were a couple different phases of my life where I would draw quite a bit but obviously I was much more stubborn and also only in the company of people who couldn't draw for shit, but I still learned quite a few conventional ideas from these periods, and I can say fairly confidently I know what I'm doing much more than the newfag who posts heavily symbol drawn loomis heads that every /beg/ thread seems to get(to the point where I can't tell if it's just a bait at this point, it's actually shockingly punctual)

I find that with online photos with usually dramatic lighting, the values and lighting are easy to assign but IRL the values are so hard to determine. It started off as an attempt to learn gesture(I'm only on the gesture part of hamptons book, I haven't gotten to anatomy and part of my frustration was that gesture didn't seem like a sensible beginning) but once that was borked I just began turd polishing for several hours. Honestly, this is not terrible. You at least demonstrate OK contours and form as well as decent proportions. As a budding artist you really should focus on being able to copy from reference and focusing on proportions. a well rendered but poorly proportioned piece will still look like shit. I think you are on the right track here.

Only obvious issue here is the foot placement near her butt. A good thing for copying is to observe the negative space that forms a shape between her foot and her butt (her right foot). There isn't actually a space there.

Good job and keep plugging away. Also use better reference photos... stuff like this won't exaclty help you piece a leg to a hip and a hip to a torso, etc. be strategic about your studies.

also work on your lines. (this just goes for anyone really).

my 2 cents as a fellow /beg/

Thanks. I actually drew this once before and it had better proportions iirc. The reason I think this one came less proportioned was because I tried to start with gesture, as that's what you're apparently supposed to learn before anatomy. My lines are something I can remember being bad at since kindergarten, and I also had to draw this with cheap mechanical pencils since that's all I have, and I'm also very bad at getting lines right on my first draw, I usually erase way too much(I even do this while writing, which makes it take way longer than it should). My erasing, smudging and other problems have made me wonder it would be wrong to just trace my own drawings after I've gotten to a point to give a cleaner slate, but that'd likely just be a crutch. As for the reference, part of it was because I wanted to learn weirder angles, and also I can't draw anything unless it has a big fat ass in it . That said, I'm guessing this doesn't change anything as far as where I should start? My only question then is should I really do gesture before anatomy?

I believe it goes proportion/accuracy -> gesture -> anatomy

At the beginning, gesture and proportion should be practiced SEPARATELY. once you get better at both of them you can merge them.
anatomy comes into play when you draw from imagination and even then you will still have references to look at.

I'll say right now, I don't know perspective. I haven't really read about it or anything and just mainly go off what looks right. I do have a copy of Perspective Made Easy, but I've never read through it yet, although I plan to.
Anyway, my problem. I was memeing around last night and drew a couple of objects on a table (not referenced or anything, just making them up as I went along) so I used the end of the table as my horizon(?) line (that's the trapezium type shape on pic related, I promise it doesn't look that bad on the actual drawing). The other lines are the corner of the room (I haven't drawn them in yet on the paper), but the black and red shapes are where I plan on having a fire or something. All I want to know is, would it be shaped more like the black outline or the red outline that's around it? My original thought was that it would be the red, but I think that would make the perspective off on the table, or should the corner of the room be the vanishing point and I've fucked up everything before I even started?

It's not really the horizon, I just used it as the horizon for what I was doing before I decided to extend it into a room. Truth is I'm probably using the completely wrong words. I do plan on reading it it's just that I started to fuck around with the pencil and paper beforehand and, just like Magnus Magnusson, I've started so I'll finish.
If I can get my scanner working, I'll post it for mockery when I've finished and you might be able to get a better idea of what I was going for. The table is obviously the focal point and the rest is just filler, but I'm too autistic to not do it (at least partly) correctly. I've obviously fucked up the objects on the table because of everything else (including my lack of ability) so I'll be expecting mockery for that too.

>>3375152
Thanks a lot senpai. Just as you posted I was looking for something similar to what I'm drawing and when I was putting the lines over it (the red ones you've put in, I don't know the name of them) I realised how much I had fucked those up too. Yours are much more like the ones on the actual photo, the one coming forwards from the corner of the room, than what I was envisioning.
I really need to read that fucking book.

I stopped drawing a while ago because as I started challenging myself more, I would fuck up my page by constantly erasing mistakes and it'd be left with a big black smudge of a page so I just quit.

Years later, I've started drawing digitally again and it's so much fun. Problem is, I have a wealth of traditional materials left over (pencils, sketchbooks, even Copics) and I miss traditional colouring, but this isn't really feasible from scratch with the amount of mistakes I make when drawing.

TL;DR: I make a mess of the page when drawing but I miss traditional drawing and don't want to be a digital-only artist. Any tips?

Master the art of drawing as lightly as feasible. Fill entire pages with your absolute lightest pressure. I had the same problem you did, and it wasn't until I filled out 2-3 pages of circles, cubes, and other shapes with my lightest pressure that I finally became conscious of when I'm drawing with too much pressure. Slowly I've made it possible to work towards nearly the end of my figure drawings with minimal residual graphite.

there was also an exercise on drawing with this low-pressure foundation and never erasing it.
