3361207 No.3361207 [Reply] [Original]

Figured it'd be helpful for some people on here to do some more structured and focused studying since it's very easy to get lost/confused with what to draw or study. This is based off the new FZD video so watch that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqWX7onVmU to understand what we're gonna be doing. Since this is the first thread we'll start with doing studies of rocks and posting them itt. The goal should be at least 5-6 pages with 10 sketches on each page (each sketch should take 20-30 minutes) by the end of the week (4/2/18). Obviously do as much as you can and it's fine if you can't meet the goal but just keep it in mind. Post in the thread as you work, ask questions, crit, etc. If the thread takes off then we'll do trees for week 2 and so on and so forth.

It's based off the crabs in a bucket scenario. idk if it's true or not but they say that when you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket they all try to climb out but as one reaches the top the others will pull him down. Then as another reaches the top the others will pull him down as well. The same can be said of many on /ic/ as they actively pull others down with their "crab" mentality believing the success of others hinders their own.

Feng's whole thing seems basically based on the idea "You can find cool inspiration in mostly anything if you know your subject, and you can make mostly anything look cool." I don't necessarily buy the idea of grinding 30 hours of just rocks in a week, but I definitely see the value of doing a few pages of rock studies, tree studies, etc. 'Mundane' objects that can actually be impressive and interesting (rather than shit like shoeboxes and coffeemugs).

Looking at the OP, those rocks look cool. My rocks look mediocre at best in comparison, so clearly there's more going on than brainlessly copying rocks. There's design, line weight, some perspective, etc. You're training up skills when you're drawing any subject, those forms you depict when drawing rocks don't evaporate when you change subject. I think in the video Feng suggests stuff like rocks because they're reasonably easy and can look like mostly anything, so it's not too discouraging when it looks 'off' from your subject the way it is with, say, a face.

>> No.3361955

>>3361660

I saw Feng do some basic values in his video, but it's more of a quick wash and some highlights, rather than too much painterly soft/hard edges and everything. One value for shadows and one for highlights seems to be enough to get some good effects without getting lost in painterly rendering.

I agree that 30hrs on rocks is a little excessive, but I think you can't see the forest from the trees. Drawing rocks CAN be fun, drawing mundane subjects instead of space marines CAN be interesting, and the outcome CAN look good if you actually use your design brain instead of your 'aimlessly copy the subject' brain. Not to mention if you look at the OP you could imagine any of that stuff making a really appealing background for your space marine.

Drawing a rock / any sort of subject can be a great exercise in showing form, line weight, etc. And it's nice when you're stuck in that sometimes paralytic state of 'what should I draw?' or 'I'm not good enough to start on my project' or 'It'll just look like shit when I'm done' to just do something. Nobody is really that afraid of fucking up a 10-20 minute rock drawing, it gets you going.

If someone on /ic/ is between spending 30 hours on rocks because they find it motivating or shitposting about why they can't draw their waifu, let 'em draw rocks. It's not useless busywork if you're doing it analytically.

I was encouraged by the crab meme at first because it was a counter to /ic/'s 'proud to be a bitter shitposter' attitude, but inevitably it's getting adopted by beginners to completely shirk advice you don't want to hear because 'muh crabs!'. Don't get mad. You did good job, but it would be so much more beneficial to apply basic fundamentals. You chose 3/4 view photo as a reference and decided to draw it from similar angle. If you copy 1:1 that way it is your choice, and it is still cool because you are drawing, but the whole point of drawing 3/4 view is to draw in perspective IMHO. It is pretty obvious your drawing has flaws in it's volume. Try to simplify reference into basic geometric shapes, then draw those shapes (preferably in slightly different angle to reference) and then add detail. I did tons of these for practice, it is hard. But you will benefit from it in a long run. I will post my work (it's 3rd time I am doing this, I am not great but I am working full time concept art), I don't have anything more recent to post since I am too busy with work. Your problem is that you've got a shitty attitude that makes you view critique as hostility, so where you could have help you instead have crabs.

You've already got a crab's mentality. You've got a crab's hostility, a crab's poor self esteem which leads to a crab's defensiveness, a crab's inclination to something being antagonistic instead of collaborative. You tell people to post their work so that you can dismiss them, but you know that if they did, you'd shit on them anyway. You communicate almost exclusively in kneejerk memes instead of trying to actually have a dialogue with anyone, you have no interest in understanding, only fighting.

You fear the crabs, anonymous. You hate the crabs. But don't you see?

You are the crabs. Ascend to lobsterhood, take advice with grace, view critiques with good intentions, and give critiques with good intentions. Only then can you achieve enlightenment. Until then you are just another crab in the bucket, seething with anger when someone offers you a claw to the top.

The sad thing is not only does the crab not realize just how many times better the person he's trying to bully is, he also does not understand what he is being criticized about.
He wasn't criticized because he's a beginner with bad drawing skills, he is criticized because he misunderstands what Feng is talking about and thus did not even attempt to apply many of Feng's important points from the video.
Meanwhile this guy >>3362227 that the crab tries to bring down, understands the principles discussed in the video, applies it correctly and naturally produces better results than the crab anon while still enjoying the process. It's no masterpiece, but it demonstrates a good understanding of what the video is about, which is something the crab fails to do.
It's such a shame he chose to have an outrage fit instead of calmly digesting, evaluating and applying the very simple, polite & valid critique.

If you think that drawing organic stuff like trees and rocks is only scribbling textures and not worrying about proportions, then you have done it wrong. These kind of exercises are good for training your eye for proportional relationships and grouping values for different planes.

Of course there will be people who just draw rocks like big messy blobs and scribble shit in there but they don't probably have any grasp of fundamentals (perspective and value). But if one has idea how to plot the lay in of the picture and then group values, these are good exercises. The video in OP also suggested drawing animal skulls which have more subtle plane shifts and softer edges, and once one has confidence in determining planes and values of rocks, skulls are good place to go next.

But then again, people in /ic/ seem to have problem in learning a new skill and tend to get stuck in drawing rocks (or anime girls) for months and nothing else. These exercises are great sketchbook fillers and warm ups (and the subjects are great for life studies) but of course you should take in learning perspective or figure drawing at same time. Don't put all your eggs in one basket etc.

#1 reason to draw rocks is that they're relatively easy to draw, because you can fuck up proportions and perspective and still have it look decent, which means you're more likely to keep drawing them and training your eye

the point is for people who are beginners to actually get to work, not to worry about a bunch of shit and give up 5minutes in.

no, it's an illusion. really that's whole arm, because the elbow can only move on one plane. so unless you're adjusting using your shoulder then you get one stroke. your fingers and wrist are also always in use making fine adjustments, which you don't even need to consciously control. only the fingers are truly capable of independent drawings.

I'm having a lot trouble keeping the rocks small on paper; often times they just eat up the whole thing, or at least half of it. Any advice?

Draw smaller rocks in comparison to how big your paper is.

Inspiration is extremely overrated, you need discipline

>> No.3367437

>>3367419
You draw a rough size of the rocks before you start with detail, just make some vague blobs about the size you want them, then flesh them out.

I would also recommend reading one of the beginner books as it goes over this and many other basic questions a beginner might have.

Draw out 10 squares on the paper so yo can have a rough idea of where to fit all the rocks and then loosely block them out in pencil to make sure they'll fit. That's what I did >>3365433

Btw, how do I get cleaner ink lines? If I make strokes too quickly, which is needed for the line quality that I want, the ink doesn't mark the paper properly. But slower lines give a less precise result. Tips?

I quit drawing for two years while working full time. Realised how bad I've gotten and started drawing more than I ever did because I've turned to horse-shit. .. Does that count as a frown upside down?

Can't advise too much about the lines, that just comes with practice over time. With the trees though, remember each branch has to be thinner than whatever its branching off of. Noticed a lot of what you did was branches thicker than the ones they were coming off of. And everything gets gradually thinner as it branches off like pic related. Sorry for the shit sketches, only had a couple minutes but you get the idea.

Spend more time on the rendering part instead of just scribbling random lines. Look at the texture of rhino skin and deliberately and slowly put down every line of tone. Look at how other artists render via line.

Your contour is fine its just your line weight + rendering letting you down.
