If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.

Keep it up, we need more orc and goblin girls.
You're doing a good job trying to represent forms but they still come across as flat because instead of giving each form it's own true position in 3D space, you're attempting to suggest depth by simply overlapping lines while keeping all forms on the same plane

Legit though I'm pretty average. I don't really draw this anime style stuff so I had to go away and try to learn by studying a bunch of other artists. For the colouring I kept a bunch of videos like this open in the background for me to reference from, since this seems to be the "in" way to colour anime-style stuff right now. Actually learnt a few transferable techniques which is always nice.

Thank you! I haven't watched Konosuba myself yet but I think she must be my friends best girl or some shit. I hope he's happy with the final product, especially since this was the rough pose draft I sent over to him initially kek

>> No.3361584

idk if it helps but my process is usually as follows:
>rough draft
>lower draft opacity
>go over lines more meticulously on a new layer
>revise and correct inaccuracies
>refine, refine, refine
>fill in base colours (each section on a seperate layer so I can tweak each layer to ensure good colour cohesion)
>shadows painted on a new multiply layer on top of base colours
>create two shadow layers (for this picture I used light pink for the base shadows, and on the second shadow layer I used blue for a nice contrast)
>highlights painted on a seperate luminosity layer on top of all those
>texture pasted in and set to overlay at the very top

It's actually a really easy process once you get the hang of it. Most of what this is is more time than it is skill imo.

>Any glaring problems
I mean, the issues with this one are mostly structural issues which will go away as you learn rather than individual errors, but if you're bent on finishing this one here's my three suggestions

-make the neck thicker or the shoulders narrower (have you ever seen an anime girl with shoulders five times the size of her neck? No, right? Usually the thin necks are counterbalanced by additionally thin shoulders)

-Look up photo reference of 'hand on hip' and challenge yourself to draw a more realistic take with either defined fingers or defined knuckles if no fingers are visible from the angle you select. Don't be stressed by a hand since in that position it'll be reduced to just a few lines and shapes, and anime hands don't usually have a great deal of linework detail. so instead of painstakingly copying the reference you can take your time thinking about where to put each individual line to convey the right shape. You'll learn from this!

-Are you sure you want the character standing with her legs pressed together like that? A leg position where she's putting weight on one foot more than the other, or else with hips pushed forward and legs skewing back/sideways like a 90s character, is more expressive and more fun, and out of the things you could do to make this pose more expressive that one has a good effort-to-impact ration. Do note if you change her leg position you need to move the hips and crotch a bit too, not just the legs.

Head is a bit too small for the fringe, plus you can show off the fringe parting more at the top.

Also, is she just looking forward or is she meant to be looking down slightly? The right eye kinda looks a bit off because the lower lid looks like she's looking down on us but the rest of the face is just kinda face front.

Also eyebrows may need a bit of work? Like, just slightly lower the right at the nose bridge a bit more?

Other than that, fuckin' rad I love the how it pops out and how simple but effective the shading is.

Excuse the shite rework, I'm quite bad at explaining unless I give it a try myself.

I get what you mean with the eye, in which case, the eye that's a bit more squinted would be a bit pushed due to the cheek and have the laugh line where the cheek is being pushed by the mouth, on the right side (like the little mark I did? Just maybe emphasise the cheek a little more)

With the head, I meant like the forehead area and where her fringe is. Her fringe looks a bit squished and flat on the top of her head, which also makes the forehead look small. I think that's just moving the top of her fringe line (between her two Monokuma hairbobbles) because Junko's fringe is pretty big and poofy. (I also poofed out her hair a bit more on her left side)/

>>3364968
Also this anon makes a point, the eyes do look off, I think it's the right eye that's badly being affected, so just double check that.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else except gimme blog.

This is really nice and my main observation is that the way you have it rendered so far, the waist/belt section of the dress looks flat (except for the circle in the middle) rather than cylindrical. Like she's just wearing a flat board thing across her waist with a dent in the middle. The sleeves also, I understand they're meant to hang loosely until the puffed attachment to the cuff but something about the tops of them looking flat that makes it hard to imagine arms existing underneath. These both might resolve when you continue rendering the sleeves and bodice, iunno.
The hair...could you take the dark brown you used to outline its shapes and incorporate that over a larger area, or otherwise push the values more? Maybe use it to further define those curls falling behind her, which sort of just look like two big peanuts rn?
I can also see subtle green hue in the bonnet and dress colors so I'm gonna disagree with the other anon and say your colors are okay since it's a desaturated green and not pure gray, though it's never a bad idea to play with colors and see if you can find an even better one.

>>3365177
This is pretty cool but at first i didn't realize it was just one snake and then both of their shadows. Could u do something to distinguish the texture of the shadows further from the texture of the snake? Just some little subtle thing since you don't want to make it too busy. Groovy style though.

>>3365135
Lines looking cool.
While the up/kicking leg is being foreshortened 'into the screen and to the left of' the viewer, which is probably what you wanted, the down leg is being foreshortened just down-and-into-the void (thigh also looking a little long, or maybe the kneecap is reading as part of the thigh, either way watch out). Hmm, something about that foot...I just think you're pushing the foreshortening on the (lower down) foot a bit too much. and in combo with the angle we're seeing it from it looks like her foot ends in a nub. I'm not sure how to fix it (although the older blue version looks more correct bc you can see the suggestion of the ankle and 'side meat' of the foot.)
If you can't find a reference showing a foot from the correct angle you might want to erm, flip the canvas, stick your own leg out and basically use that as a reference.

Sorry to bag on the one little foot. Her upper half and the other foot look cool!

Cute characters! (Also I think that anon might be the guy who always gets told off in the drawthread because he tries start shit with everyone who crits him.)

>What's your painting process? From the beginning.
...unorganized, is what. In others' painting videos they have a way more logical workflow. I'm not even sure how to answer, but...usually...
I first define values (just two or three) on a designated layer, both with and without the original sketch visible (i try to make it clear what is being depicted even without the sketch), i play with and perfect those values as much as i can, then selecting a pleasing color range to correspond to them for the different colors of the character, keeping in mind to change hue on the color wheel if i change value. Then on to the main long part of painting where you render and 'sculpt', creating smooth transition between the values and slowly putting in all the details that were left out, but without losing the silhouette of the original areas of values that i settled on, keeping a copy of that and checking it against the ongoing painting from time to time. This is the main part of the process and I don't know how to break it down further, it's same as watching most people paint. Finally when it's finished or 'eh good enough', i usually apply some more subtle colors to large areas of the whole thing on a new low-opacity layer (ex i made some of her body slightly more pink bc it wasn't quite right before) until the colors look overall pleasing. Actually i might have cut this step short on the piece I posted, I'm now seeing some areas that could use more adjusting. But yeah that's basically it!

Kudos for challenging yourself, beginnerfriend.
Pay attention to where objects are in relation to one another, something which is useful in both realistic and stylized. (ex. in this one, toe his left foot is flush with the bottom of the chair leg; his right foot, farther forward, has its heel flush with that same point; meanwhile n your drawing you've placed the left foot BELOW the chair leg, which since it's farther back than the leg is impossible and has it going into the floor, and the other foot too forward.) You might want to do a Bargue plate, if you have the patience, bc it'll improve visual measuring skills. Keep challenging yourself!

I always wonder about why people bother with this kind of 'just make features bigger and larger' caricature. The world is filled with them already, they're never pleasant to look at, and (the most important part of caricature art, imo ) they 99% of the time don't actually say anything about the personality of the celebrity in question. And they're just so ugly, no matter how much technical skill! What made you want to draw this, anon?

...then again, magazines like them for some reason, so maybe that's why you drew it. But if there's a reason beyond marketability please let me know bc i always wonder about these damn things.

>the exact same reason
Oh, like same as family portraits? But like, your brother's weird ears that you always teased him about or your wife's huge smile you fell in love with are something that would be inherently funny or interesting to have art of. I like the successful emphasis of the most characteristic features of the subject executed with skillful technique in order to further the narrative, mood, essence, or presence of the subject.

You don't look at a caricature of your wife the same way that you look at a picture of her on your wedding day, you look at and think "haha that is SO Sharon".
I think you're missing the point with your "duck lips" comment. You dont just slap exaggerated features on someone willy nilly, you only emphasize the features that make that person instantly recognizeable. The fact that you know it's william shatner instantly despite the fact that it's very far from a realistic depiction of shatner is in itself the sign of a successful caricature.

Looks like you're struggling to use the tools for digital painting (on top of having a pretty convoluted process). Looks like you're mainly using a brush that has its size and opacity pressure enabled. You may find it easier to control if you use a brush that only has opacity pressure enabled, especially for rendering and blending. In fact, rarely do you ever use a brush that changes in size, even for lineart/sketching. Your coloring process seems fine as it is though, but it looks like you could use better brush settings.
