Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others!

Please make sure your posted image is clear, downsized to around 1000 pixels wide, rotated to the correct orientation, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one.

What happened to the guy who made the OP pic? Everything except his instagram is wiped clean.

@themichaelmacrae for the curious

It's also weird how he has an incredibly tiny amount of followers on all of his accounts. You'd think someone like that would have tens of thousands.

The problem comes from the lack of information on the palm or back of the hand, however you view it, there isn't any shading or at the least contour lines to describe what is being seen. But as I view it more it may be the back of the hand because you can see the knuckles which means he fucked up the anatomy either way.

I know but this is why fine artists don't like posting on /ic/. You guys just can't handle the idea of an artist that leaves things out of their drawing even though they could "fix it" if they wanted to. I literally added two tiny lines and it was suddenly up to your guys' standards. That's an illustrators mindset. That every artist should work to 100% of their knowledge at all times and never leave things up to interpretation.

>> No.3356882

>>3356871
As a counterpoint to this though, it's part of why you guys are so critical of contemporary fine artists. They aren't actually capable of more than they are showing. They paint one line on a canvas and call it done then have the nerve to say "but I could do more if I wanted to". So I understand the hesitance towards my work and why illustration can seem at times more honest, cause illustrators never try to be something they arent

>> No.3356883

You were arguing with one guy. The hand just doesn’t read well. IMO the hand doesn’t read well not just because you imply a line between the wrist and inner thumb so that it reads like the thumb’s first knuckle, but also because you gave the pinkie the size and length of an index finger. Also clean your goddamn thumbnails it’s fucking disgusting.

>>3357060
push your values. your value range is really small. dont paint against a white background -- it makes it hard to judge your values. try scrubbing the canvas with some desaturated midtones at the start of the pic, or right after you've done your initial sketchy lineart. if i were you id hold off on colors altogether for now and just focus on drawing skills and values.

But without fault the next painting I post will always be a completely different style, and the cycle will repeat itself. I'm just working my way through all the things I'm capable of from "worst" to "best". I'm still trying to work through all of the styles of the 2000s and 1900s before I start doing impressionism in earnest. I'm not getting "better" I'm just finishing up certain ranges of styles before I move onto the more "complicated" stuff. I'm hoping to reach Renaissance level painting by the time I'm 50 or 60 and then just paint whatever the hell I want after that.

This pic from last month displays the usage of about 4 different brushes from the set. When you know the fabric patterns, you can easily use a single brush to draw tree, hair (though not recommended), and rough fabric textures, as well as grass, tyre marks, and even tyres themselves with certain movements.
Other textures, such as skin, silk, or soft sofas, are achievable with standard Perlin noise and pencil/pastel brushes. Experiment with them and see what works best.

Hello /beg/ here only posting because I never get any crits in the beg thread and I don't feel like grinding cubes today. Please tear me a new one. Was just practicing blending spheres in procreate when I got bored and tried this.

>> No.3359852

you said you used procreate, but go to ctrlpaint.com and watch some tutorials to get a better sense for how to use digital tools. avoid smudge and shading with black for now.

>> No.3359868

>>3359852
Ok will do this thanks. In this scenario what would be a more appropriate hue/tone for the shadows? I tried upping saturation and taking a halfway towards the black from the midtone but it just never felt dark enough. I also tried mixing other colors in ( the blue highlights and the redish tone) but I think the end result seems more muddy. Side question- how do I get it to not look like shit without the lines from the initial sketch? I figured it was the fact that the lines helped with the darkest values but maybe this isn't the case? Thanks for feedback.

>> No.3359901

>>3359868
think in value instead of hue. it would be good to practice with some b/w pictures. you can also open pictures (either actual photos or other people's art that you like) and use the color picker to see what the picture's palette is like. you'll probably be surprised at how unsaturated it is.

a lot of people have difficulty with blending at first. avoiding muddy colors is a matter of technique, so watch tutorial videos and practice.

your side question is a little complicated. you're aiming for a realistic style that doesn't depend on lines, yes? did I understand that correctly? anyway, you're right. you're relying on lines to convey the form because your values aren't strong enough on their own.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbo6ZAuF914

here's a video you might helpful. it compares four different approaches to drawing the same subject, and one of them relies on the necessity of line as a stylistic choice.

It's good when you're new to life drawing to use your non-dominant hand from time to time. Because it changes the way you approach drawing in that you need to look and think more (as a way to counter symbol drawing), and it lowers the pressure on yourself at making good drawings.

But these days I mostly just do it to change things up a bit and challenge myself.

Try to imagine everything as real 3dimentional objects. Then draw a line that lies on top the 3dimentional face from the top of the head, down between the eyes, through the nose, and to the chin.
You want everything that's based on the location of the skull to be proportionate to this line. (there are exceptions, but don't mind those right now)

One thing you should discover quickly is that the nose makes 0 sense and confuses the entire image. Is she pointing her face towards the viewer, or is it pointed slightly up and away from us?

Loomis would unironically help you fix this. Try it out.

Abstraction is much more than painting loosely. Abstraction needs to be based in drawing, and consistently revolving around a concept. You have to be abstracting it according to a set of rules. "Abstract" art that is simply observational but simplified is more akin to a style like in an illustration. If that's what you're going for then call it a style, but otherwise this isn't abstraction, it's just blocking in a regular realist painting but calling it done before you do the details. In other words: lazy

Why does a painting have to have details in order to be "done"? The work is done if the artist says it is done. It isn't lazy to leave areas intentionally simply resolved.

as much as any painting is based in drawing. you don't start with an observational drawing, paint it loosely, then call it abstract. That's just ignoring steps in the process. If you paint something loosely but the drawing is still academic in nature and not abstracting things to a particular end, it's not abstract art. It's just a style you applied across an academic drawing by leaving parts of it kind of loose. The Sargent treatment.

>I painted it loosely
>I'm forward thinking like the Impressionists

No, you aren't, Sargent. You're just an art student that never matured out of classroom assignments and now you're doing commissions. Not actually diverging from what he is looking at, just ignoring a few steps that would've made his work strictly academic so now he can say he's """"""painterly""""""""

i mean sure, i guess... but that denegrates all of art history into "Realism is abstract enough". That takes the colors of impressionism and does to it what the original critics of it said.

>So tell me Pissaro? Was that tree REALLY purple?

Saying "enough" is enough is what leads to academicism being the end all be all, and the end of the avant garde. It means we take the courage of Picasso to draw an object from multiple angles in the same image and say "Sargent could've done that if he wanted to". I hate to use the same adage of art that pompous art critics use but the fact of the matter is "but he didn't". You can have all the technical ability in the world but if you just do what is expected of you and never challenge yourself to make something that embarrasses you a little bit, you aren't much of an artist.

You think Gauguin was confident that what he was doing was groundbreaking 100% of the way? I highly doubt he never had moments where he felt absolutely stupid for trying to abstract art further than his contemporaries. Because that''s the lingering thought in the head of all those great spearheads of art movements was "Is this going too far?"

"Am I just making bad art?"

Sargent never had that thought, and that's the absolute reason why his art is, in fact, bad.

>> No.3364218

Could you define the fingers on the hip hand further? It just looks like a mitten right now (I see what you were trying to do, it just didn't work out.) That entire arm is too thin also, and the back adjacent to it looks oddly flat.
The entire figure from the waist down is kind of compressed/short looking but there's not much you can do about it now. Just something to keep in mind next time.
Ass shadows are looking extremely square and unnatural.
You've also moved the model's nose too far down her face, as a result it's more prominent and in combination with the sharply defined cheekbones the profile reads as a man.
I like how you've done the hair, especially the resting messy strands on the shoulder.

As opposed to how beautiful and fleshed out the light-bathed part of the hair looks on the right side of the stylized flat colored hank, the shaded section on the left looks dull and flat, I think it could use more range in value.

What parts are you not understanding? Well I'm not going to draw an entire picture but I can try to explain.

-The hand on the hip you have drawn as a silhouette with only the pinky picked out using value, I feel using solid lines to define a few more of the fingers would help since it currently looks mittenlike compared to the other hand, hopefully that was a simple enough suggestion to get. The arm attached to that hand is too thin, particularly the upper arm. The back next to that upper arm also look flat (probably because it's a straight line in your pic and not the reference). I put some blue to emphasize the arm's heft and the flow and curve of the model's back muscle
-Bottom half is compressed, for reference I scaled the torso of your drawing and the model to be the same size from lip to top of loincloth, then added one more green line to where the right food should approximately be. as you can see the yours does not reach the expected length to maintain the proportion, the bottom half is squashed. Could be mostly or entirely distortion from how you took the picture but I have to comment on what I see.
-Rectangle ass shadows...that one shouldn't need further explanation but I drew a red line on the right angled ness of yours and the more natural one of the model.
-Profile, just did a red line on your piece to show my meaning. Maybe should have used yet another color...ehh.

Hopefully that helps make the stuff i said make sense. Some of it may sound like nitpicks but every single one was something that would make the piece more believable, from fine to really good.

If you think loosely painted academic art is "abstract" then what fucking ever. I can't convince you otherwise. Apparently the bar for good abstraction is subtlety. Not a very alpha male position to take but you do you.

Simply not how it works. Abstract art was going to be abstract from its conception. Down to the initial drawing it was always going to be an abstract painting, and it was brought to completion accordingly. The painting I posted by Picasso started out "abstract" as you and this website are calling it, but the better term for it is "unfinished". He simply brought it to completion. Picasso's "Woman in a Red Armchair" isn't a realistic painting that he didn't finish all the way, it was a painting that down to the sketches he did for it was always meant to be an abstracted version of a woman. Do you see what I'm trying to tell you? Abstract art isn't a step along the way to realism, it is a different kind of painting altogether. Picasso brought his abstract painting of that woman to the same level of finish as Sargents painting you posted. Picasso didn't just "leave it abstract".

What you are posting is simply known as academicism in the fine arts world. It is practically illustration because so much of it is based on moving the paint around until it vaguely resembles what you are looking at. True Impressionism is considered, it is rooted in drawing exactly what you are looking at and not "performing" and making slick artwork that mimics reality. Anybody can do that. That's not good art to me, and it certainly isn't "abstract". You give great artists too little credit, and artists like Sargent too much

I would even argue that Picasso's painting I posted is more "finished" than either of your Sargent examples. Even if to you "abstract" just means "unfinished", on a purely production basis Picasso absolutely brought all of his pieces to a more finished polish than anything Sargent ever did. Sargent just didn't finish paintings so normies and rich people would call him "painterly" and get to pretend to be a patron of progressive artwork

oh I get what you mean
I respect your opinion.
I still like how it looks. I don't know why.
When I got involved with art two years ago, I was obsessed with hypperalism, now I kinda like more like this, I love when I can see the brush strokes.
I was researching why it was so pleasent and I found some articles explaining abstraction in a painting. Subtle brushstrokes that if you see closer is just abstract but if you look the whole piece it is something.
Well, thanks for your time.

lmfao oh shit she took it off
Yeah, really nicely done! every issue I pointed out seems to be fixed. The face is more accurate to the model and more anatomically correct, and the arm and back look much more real/fleshy. New bum region looks good, I'm not sure there should be so much indent between her left glute and thigh, but that's just a tiny little thing.

outline of the mouth feels too strong. maybe try using lighter lines, or skipping the effect entirely
