In a city nearby me there's this shopping centre. I've been frequenting the place for years and there's an individual that stands out to me everytime I'm there. A tall, slender, beautiful woman, mid-20's, but she's an employee of the centre. Dressed in unflattering baggy clothing, a hi-visi waistcoat, I always see her hauling around bags or rubbish or sweeping the floors, but she has this look on her face like she's constantly thinking about murdering everybody.

She's been there for years now, and it's just so weird to see somebody that looks like her in that kind of work. Anyway I wanted to draw her.

Concept art/character design practice for my sci fantasy ttrpg set in the 71st century galaxy. This is called "Waiting at a Utopian Crosswalk". I'm trying to draw more like Moebius, after a few years of just basically absentmindedly doodling I'm trying to get better. ANything I can work on? What is the flower girl for? Is it part of a larger project? Is it about the character, or the technique used to illustrate? Doesn't look like rob liefields work at all. The colors are nice tho, but, what is the point of the flower girl? Was she drawn for the sake of drawing a character, is she a real person? Is there any depth to her?

This is pretty straight forward. Video game concept art. Yours is a lot better and there may potentially be a still better one ...also one where the character doesn't end up upside down lol.

I played with it for a little rotating it to between 45-90deg clockwise to see how it was and a 60deg rotation looked kind of nice but i am not the best at this stuff.

Another anon here, I think the original comp is better. It's confusing at first because it takes up more space than my monitor, but when you pop it into a new tab and look at the image as a whole, it looks perfect.

I find the second image truly confusing, because the figure is upsidedown, and just looks like it's lying on the ground with its back up against the wall.

Open the two images in new tabs and tell me I'm wrong.

However, perhaps just turn it a little to the right, eliminating the whole dutch angle thing, so that the verticals are vertical. I sorta suspect you tried all this shit already.

Weird. You guys have some really similar styles. your stuff makes sense. Maybe you just turn it counter clockwise a little bit. I don't think it's a terribly bad idea to lose the tips of those swords. They're kind of hugging the edge and it looks like "I had to crop here because these swords are here". I don't ever really feel like I'd be "part of it" when I'm critting someone who's at an advanced level. That'd be fucking delusional. I never said art had to be 'something'.
I clearly said that it's
>just lines on paper

I asked the other artists why they did their art. The drawings that were posted before mine were not realism, therefore how can you expect to determine perspective, form, value, light, colour and technique from imagination. I can possibly understand perspective but those drawings, including my own are mere sketches. I don't know if there were references to the prior drawings to actually draw a comparison to determine these values.

>I have so much to learn but you have nothing to teach me.
Lol ok

>>3353307
>not useful or in the proper spirit of this thread, man.
True
>the point of life drawing is to grow your skills, including to people and characters that don't make your weiner hard
I'm sure this opinion differs among artists

>>3353637
I dunno. I care. I mean, you are drawing a character, it would be nice to get a story for this moment in her life where she has been captured and immortalized from the life she lived in your mind. It would make your work more interesting. Some sort of connection between you and her.

Sorry for repeating others but you should study proportions and measurements first. Although considering that this is animu you might want to get an animu example of the face rather then real life one.

Then consider studying anatomy on at least superficial level so you won't miss some pretty obvious and large body parts like pectoralis major or trapezius. Proko has fairly short videos on the subject but there are plenty more out there, like Vilppu and others.

Also consider studying perspective to a point where you can free hand simple 3d objects from any angle and combine them, even if it looks crappy and jittery. Nothing too big - boxes, cylinders, boxes with holes in shapes of cylinders, that sort of thing.

>>3352096
>>3352101
Didn't read much, but that material looks cheesy as fuck at a glance. Like one of those countless 1 page tutorials with questionable source for information. While it covers quite a lot in condensed manner it also leaves out stuff like bones of the skeleton, which can be kinda a big deal when you want to study anatomy since bones largely define the range of motion of human body and understanding where the muscles attach also helps with understanding where those muscles will be in a any given position. I wouldn't recommend using this as your only source of information.

As for the drawings themselves - the arms don't attach to the torso like a pair of noodles. Look at pic related and the character in the centre of your picture. See the difference in how the arms attach to the torso? It kinda lacks pectoralis there, no? While drawing from imagination is commendable do consider drawing from models and use reference of the subject that you study. Also it is hard to tell what the hell is going on with the surface that the feet and palms are standing on. If you want to draw a figure in 3 dimensional space try to draw a manikin\stick figure first, then draw the rest. It is much easier to map the ground with simplified subject.

That's kinda unfunny and badly drawn.

I like the comparison of "soyboy" being just a variation of asshole or motherfucker, just an insult. If you replace soyboi with asshole you can see is not very funny.

Second thing is that your 3/4 view and stiff characters tell me you don't have fundies.

Study construction, gesture etc then anime:
Loomis fun with a pencil: https://www.alexhays.com/loomis/Andrew%20Loomis%20-%20Fun%20WIth%20a%20Pencil.pdf

Nah, an /int/ thread would just give people more ways to tell other people they're in the wrong thread, make people argue more about what belongs in what tier, and it would sort of turn the draw thread into a /good/ thread by implication. I've always seen the draw thread as including everyone, while the beg thread should just disclude people who are decent and won't get crits there.

Perhaps we should just have a /shit/ thread and the drawthread becomes /beg/ :D

Meh, this discussion isn't going anywhere...my personal adv: if you think someone's work doesn't belong, ignore the post, and give crit to works of the skill level you're comfortable critting. The light source for the tube seems to be lower left, but the light source for the face seems to be upper left.
Tube itself looks extremely simple and cartoony while the face looks like "children's cartoon" was NOT your desired aesthetic; study some photos of cylinders/shapes in general) to improve this. The colors of your piece are muddy and unappealing.

>>3354447
Head too small, breasts look weightless and bolted on, and the pose itself lacks natural motion and gesture. You've also done yourself a disservice by not ven trying to draw the hands and feet - how else will you learn, anon?
Do some studies and gesture drawings from various reference images of women walking in order to more naturally depict it. Gesture in particular will benefit you. Also review anatomy as much as possible, and focus on the parts that scare you, like hands and feet seem to!

>>3354478
>shapeless nose
>featureless nasolabial area
>far eye at the wrong angle
>hair is mass of individual lines instead of overall shapes
I think you should do some studies of faces/heads before drawing your chara again. Maybe find one you like of an actor or someone else who can be seen from multiple angles and learn how to draw different features (eyes in particular, and how they look from different angles) and sketch for a bit. As you do so, get used to defining the head through shapes of shadow and not-shadow, rather than lines as you are doing now. Maybe read up on skulls and facial muscles as well and then try to add them "under" an existing drawing to "check your work".

Yes, you are right. Shadows/light source is something i struggle with, any tutorial to recommend me?

Yes, that was a fast sketch. I don't want it to look cartoony. I will follow your advice and check some tutorials on how to collor metal

Another thing you could do for a while is for every painting you make, have one main inspo painting in b&w from a really good artist and just look at the value range he has going on in his piece and more or less copy it over.
Also I suggest you start painting from life in b&w, takes longer than only analyzing a b&w photo but you learn a lot more with the addition of gaining mileage.
Over time you'll just know intuitively what values you need and where, keep at it anon.

Excuse me for indulging, but imma vandalise it a lil bit. I really like that blend of soft shadows and hatching, reminds me of metal gear solid art, but damn me if I ever manage to replicate it.

I'm working on character design of a meat shield human servant of an awol alien scientist, defending his base of operation from locals. Did I manage to communicate it in the drawing? I like the contrast of the upper and lower halves but I'm not sure if it works together.

What's going on with its stomach? Is that an arrow sticking out of it?

Otherwise it's pretty good.

yeah, a couple arrows. Trying to push the idea of sturdiness, zombiefiendess and dispensabillity of the human bits.

Yeah, go for it.
I've got friends with less experience than you that got a few opportunities from it. And, to me at least, you looks like someone with a confirmed artstyle, wich is good.

Awesome dude! Your angle is much better than what I came up with when I posted a couple of days ago. One more small crit:

The sword bag could use some drop shadow and ambient occlusion on the ground. It looks like it's floating a bit. Had to point this out since everything else is so perfect.

You have a blog or something? I really like this piece!

The linework is the best part, I'd recommend just turning this into flat colors with cel shading.

>> No.3355806

Work on getting cleaner lines. This is entirely chicken scratch.
After that, practice line weight and how that works. See how the lines communicate nothing about
the shape?
And also learn to have a focal point in mind. See how everything looks flat because you've treated it all the same? You need to have an attitude towards the different parts of the drawing.
And finally you should practice drapery and shading.

You know, i don't consider myself an artist. I just draw characters that i like and some others that i created, like this one in the pic. I wish i had studied music when i was young, somehow i ended up studying drawing. Anyways, any feedback on this drawing i made some weeks ago? I guess i could use more linework and anatomy knowledge.
