A divided sphere isn't a bad starting point for drawing heads, but the way the book explains it makes it seem way harder than it actually is.

It pretty much makes it seem like you have to just "guess" and "feel" where the divisions are meant to go, when in reality the fact that it's a sphere means that lines around the entire circumference follow very strict consistent rules that once learnt make this shit easy.

Anon, they are not arcs, they don't originate from the corners. That's why in your last stages they don't match up. They are ellipsis and they go all the way around the sphere.

It's preferable to do just the opposite, to draw the straight line that crosses the sphere in the angle you want, think of the perspective and connect the dots with the ellipsis. The two ellipsis are perpendicular.

I stopped drawing a while ago because as I started challenging myself more, I would fuck up my page by constantly erasing mistakes and it'd be left with a big black smudge of a page so I just quit.

Years later, I've started drawing digitally again and it's so much fun. Problem is, I have a wealth of traditional materials left over (pencils, sketchbooks, even Copics) and I miss traditional colouring, but this isn't really feasible from scratch with the amount of mistakes I make when drawing.

TL;DR: I make a mess of the page when drawing but I miss traditional drawing and don't want to be a digital-only artist. Any tips?

I kind of phrased my post wrong, so let me explain;

The show isn't necessarily great unto itself, but it isn't really supposed to be. It's supposed to serve as a training ground for talented western animators. Steven Universe differs from most other western shows in that all of the key animation is done in house. This is common in japan, but in the west, a lot of studios outsource a lot of their animation. Steven universe is animated in house, has much more elaborate animation than a lot of other shows, and is controlled by artists, not television executives

The show is only decent from an animation standpoint, but it's a step in the right direction for western animation

If you truly want to become a working artist, read through all these books, take time to get everything looking right, and move on to the next one. Successful illustration is his best. Just spend three months drawing for eight hours daily and you'll already be better than most artists who "grind" drawings.

That swordfighting is stiff and bland. And other than the initial hit that knocks Steve back, there's no weight to it.

For modern shows, Voltron has much better on foot fight scenes. They're not perfect, but at least they feel like there's some weight there.
