As a complete beginner, what is the best path to get as good as/similar to pic related (Yusuke Kozaki)? Habits to develop, books to read, teachers to follow, should I copy, etc.?

I'm a 25 year old, undisciplined, depressed, anxiety-ridden, perfectionist retard. I remember loving to draw as a little kid, but something must have happened that stamped out my interest in it. My brother is an awesome artist in a top-tier art school and drawing has always seem to come naturally to him, but not to me. I was always the music guy. But recently I've decided I truly want to become a cartoonist, because all my life I've loved anime and cartoon, stylized-type art more than anything, but like I said before, for some reason I haven't wanted to draw until now. But I feel so lost as to how to get started. I draw a circle or a line on my paper and erase it over and over again, because I am craving perfection. Also I feel like my mental imagery is so foggy and I can't picture things well enough to draw from imagination. How can I fight through this? Drawing is a skill right? Talent is negligible compared to hours worked?

I am not looking for shortcuts or answers I want to hear. I am willing to work the rest of my life for this. I don't want to go to school for anything else, I just want to draw. But I'm scared to try. Thank you.

Not even kidding, you're just going to give up. Most people who come here are exactly the same. If you don't even draw, don't even ask for anything. It's pointless. Never mind all your other issues.

He's somewhat right though. So many come here and ask specific questions about their improvement but don't show their art. A lot ask if they should even continue, or start. No matter how much encouragement and advice one receives, the exact thread will be made the following day. "How do I draw like this?" "Should I draw at all?" "Am I too old?" "What's the best method?"

Just do it and don't be afraid to get laughed at, show your art.

Go through Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson. By the end of that you will be on the right track and probably be motivated enough to keep going. Do not ever give up. You have one life, and if you want to draw, then fucking DRAW.

I'm almost 23 and have depression, and want to do well in art aswell.

My depression isn't as bad as it used to be since I set myself the goal of wanting to succeed in art, the discipline comes if you truly want to achieve the goal your setting.

I think the biggest steps you can take are this.

- set yourself a schedule; make one where you can dedicate atleast 2 hours of studying and gradually improve your stamina and add more hours in overtime, i learnt this from another anon here.

- have breaks, by breaks I mean just relax and do whatever you want. I highly suggest you start doing excersises as it helps with depression and keeps you away from wasting time on vidya or YouTube which is easy to waste like 4 hours in a flash.

- do research on what to study and use the resources this board has, get all the artbooks you can get from inspiration to study material and get a cg peers account.

- keep drawing don't spend too much time talking about it and posting here or anywhere for that matter that time should be spent studying.
My mindset is everything that I'm doing is for the sake of art.

This. There's a reason kids pick up new languages or creative skills such as music/art so much easier when they're young. At 25 it's all downhill from there.

Delusional retards clinging to pipe dreams desperately want to believe otherwise and will tout the few outliers, but reality is if you aren't good by 20s you might as not waste your time. Mathematically only so many of us can make it, the market only supports so many artists. Save yourself the grief

Don't worry about perfection if you're a beginner. You will be shit for a while and there's no way to avoid that

>Also I feel like my mental imagery is so foggy and I can't picture things well enough to draw from imagination.
You need to stop drawing from imagination immediately. If you can't draw something from reference, then it hopeless, and even counter-productive to draw from imagination.

OP, if I could leave you with one tip just remember that the main thing with anime is shape. In fact write it down and keep reminding yourself when you draw. Also when you study other artists analyze the shape of the eyes, heads, legs, etc

Welp. If you want to draw, read the sticky. There will be books there and it will give you a plan to follow. Also you're right, drawing is a skill and it can be taught. It's just that it's very hard to learn. So make sure you know how difficult the task you're tying to achieve is. Perfectionism will only bother you if you didn't count for the difficulty of the task. Make sure you only do a little bit each day and slowly increase the amount of time you practise. I started with 20 minutes then moved to 2 hours. Have at least one day where you don't touch a pencil, this is to help your brain catch up with everything you learned. While practise is really important and should take most of your time, make sure you also take the time to simply draw for yourself. Draw whatever you like and have fun. This is very important. Remember to be patient, every bad drawing is one step closer to a better one. I wish you the best of luck anon.
