There's so many tuts for doing different metals, but my best tip, that goes for all materials too, is to take a close look at it in different conditions, and thinking about how to render it using your own workflow.

Metal is one of those things, along with water etc. that you can virtually spend an infinity trying to render to perfection, and you will go mad in the process. I suggest you do a few smaller studies of a couple of spheres or cutlery or other simple objects, and try to render them as detailed as you possibly can, to try to familiarize yourself with how the material works.

Once you have a better grasp, you should try to to abstract and simplify, incorporating it into your workflow.

Try this for your next study:

Start with two values - light and dark. These are not your lightest light or darkest dark. once you have broken the subject down into light and dark shapes then you can add core shadows and occlusion shadows and fill/bounce light to your dark areas, and highlights to your light areas. After this start blending your different values together where they meet but don't over blend and pay attention to edge quality - faster value transitions denote sharper edges or creases and softer value transitions imply a smoother surface. When adding fill light to your dark areas or form shadows to your light areas keep in mind this simple mantra: "the dark in the light is brighter than the light in the dark". This means that your darkest value on the light side of your subject should still be lighter than the lightest value on the dark side of your subject.

you just need to read a book about it.
it's not even really color theory. it's just theory. color theory relates specifically to color design really, not the practical way color works in nature, that's just painting. what you really want to look up is a book about how light works in relation to art.

isn't there a book called 'color & light: something something', that should be a good one.

it may also do you well, very well in fact, to read something aimed at photographers, lighting for photos etc. their various lamps and lights are excellent metaphors for real and imaginary lighting situations.

it's worth knowing how the technology you're using actually produces it's color too, as you may find that it is a lot more imperfect than you think.

no it always happens, just not in the same way. an object doesn't get less colorful (saturation) because it has less light on it , it just isn't reflecting as much light (luminance). and obviously you can see more ambient and reflected light which changes the color, even if it's the same source the ambient light doesn't affect the apparent color of the shadowy bits of the object in the same way,

I don't have the tit tutorial on me, but someone will so I'm just gonna wait on that.
Wrists aren't that thin either. You look like you're trying to stylize before knowing proportions and it's bad.
Stay safe anon.

Watch your proportions, see redline. What exactly was the purpose of the drawing? At first, I just figured you were practicing proportions, but then I saw the elf head, so I'm wondering if you're inventing a character.

If it's just practicing proportions, don't worry about making such neat lines. Better to practice again and again doing it messily but trying to be accurate. If this is a character concept, you definitely need to explore some more interesting poses before spending a lot of time on this. In either case, there's no need to hide the hands or feet like you have, you need to practice them.

>>3349391
I disagree with >>3349417, the colours can work, but make sure the values are working first. The composition is okay, but I like the flow/movement if you know what I mean. For me the real problem is that it's unclear what's going on. I see a horse dragon coming out of a hole in the wall, then some teeth floating in front of it's face, projecting the lightning. Is it meant to be a horn? Next thing I would do is really refine all the shapes so that we know what's going on.

>>3349366
To me, this looks cheezy and painted very lazily with not a lot of attention to detail. It's also really ugly, but that can be okay.

>> No.3349453

>>3349366
The thing that's making it ugly is primarily the colours. They're just all over the colorwheel, chosen and arranged seemingly ramdomly on the canvas. To a lesser degree, it's the really lazy, unconsidered shapes. It looks like it was your first time painting all those objects.

Depending on the size this has to be shown in, it could use some more contrast on the focal point maybe? It's so dark on my small screen that my eyes just wander to the bundle of swords asap, I almost missed the face/mask until I zoomed in. In fact if I squint I completely lose the face. If it's supposed to be shown bigger though it's probably fine, I really like those hands. Although the two touching the zweihaender and the one grasping the knee are not as good as some of the others in shadow or the one holding the mask. By not as good I don't mean not as rendered, it's just that they look a bit muddy-ish. I'm nitpicking now.

I think it's just Corel. I get the same problem with this and their other art software.

They have a serious lag issue after you've made x many inputs, and if you try to change up a tool or layer in the middle of a lag, you're fucked. The software can't handle it, no matter how fast your CPU and GPU, no matter how much RAM you have.

Here is how I solve it: When lag gets shitty, I (1) scream "FUCK!" (2) screenshot what I have just in case I need to re-create it (3) save what I have, if possible, then (4) shut down the whole program and start it again.

Closing out the file and reopening it doesn't do the trick. You have to shut down the program itself.

If I wait too long to do it, I get the same "has stopped working" gong of death as you.

I don't know why this is how it is, it's just how it is.

Just googled "angry wolf" and I found a picture of an angry wolf. Even though your wolf had some white eyes the one I found on google looks much more fierce and intense. Your earlier version >>3347896 is better. You can tell even from the thumbnail

Here are some ways where things turned south IMO:
>Color
Though some of the vibrant blues are nice, most are too intense and break the overall mood and color harmony from the earlier stage.

>Hands
Should really get refs for hands, even using quick studies of your own hands helps a lot. The old left hand position was more interesting than the current with is stiffer and less expressive.

>Values and Form
Wasn't perfect in the original, but definitely got worse. Try treating each body part as a primitive form. Focus on the overall distribution of light and dark when mapping your values. Looking at the trapezius, deltoid and upper arm muscles, you are giving each minor form their own highlights and deep shadows when you could instead emphasize the overall cylinder form of the arm. If it helps you can even imagine the whole upper body (minus wings) as a sphere, pay attention to what's in light and what's in shadow, then emulate that onto the figure. Can help dictate where lightest lights should go.
(1/2)

>> No.3351528

>>3351191
>>3351526
>Detailing
This is your biggest issue. You're overly relying on linework where a more painterly approach with edge variety would work better. The older version was more painterly, and instead of refining using the same approach and slowly painting on top of your lines, you opted to use lines that make many minor forms read poorly. The lines on the arm around the deltoid read like pinching valleys, ignoring how skin lies on top of muscle and would smooth out the separation of muscles. This is the same issue with that devilman you posted in an earlier thread.

Details are an issue in areas you should be consulting refs. The webbing of the wings don't look anything like bat wings both from a lighting standpoint and texture content. Like the devilman, where you could render interesting skin texture you instead overdo these spaghetti-like lines along every minor form that just don't read like anything believable. Doesn't look like muscle, skin, scales, bumps, or anything we'd imagine on demon skin.

You're taking your time zooming in drawing out the shape of individual teeth, but completely ignoring the overall lighting scenario that dictates which group of teeth should be lightest, which group is in shadow, etc. The old rougher version had some indication that you considered your light source, but then you suddenly throw that away. Same issue exists for the gums, where the rough version shows a clear light source and the newer version is flat in favor of marking each bump.

>tldr;
Focus on your big forms, and don't stop focusing on them as you refine. Stop relying on line where edge and value play can better show forms. Instead of laying in layers of parallel lines for supposed detail, think about what textures you want to imply, where you want to deliberately show it to the viewer, and where you want to omit it for a better read. Keep this stuff in mind for future pieces.

As weird as it sounds maybe downgrading your picture could make it better, more cohesive

These aren't bad for quick sketches.

Pick one and work on it. Stick to one drawing and finish it. One of the things I have observed here is the lack of work ethic on /ic/ when it comes to traditional mediums.
Pick one of the babies and just draw the whole thing, add colors. Watercolors, or color pencil. They're just better in my opinion.

Don't leave them like this. Whip out a GOOD pen, either traditional dip pens or technical pens (rapidographs). Felt tips are no good.

These are decent sketches tho, I am curious how one of them would look completed.

Your proportions look decent, faces look accurate, and the rendering is nice in itself where finished, just that the detail needs to be applied more thoughtfully.

This is such an odd picture, it definitely looks pasted together. I think it's because stuff is high detail when it shouldn;t be and viceversa. I guess that's partially because it isn;t done! The usual workflow is to work the details in evenly. If find that makes it easier to play around with having different levels of detail throughout the picture in a way that carries the eye around the composition and highlights what's most important. Right now, the tree is the same as the wood is the same as the hair, so I imagine the final image will be all superdetailed or something. Don't do that, it will become more rigid and boring.

Check the values by removing the saturation.. you have a lot of mid gray going on here. Use light/dark and contrast. Even if you want the picture to be mostly muddled grays, which is cool, you need some higher contrast areas... I guess you did it a bit with faces there.

Check the perspective around the eyelevel. You have a lot going on there, so it needs to be more accurate. Left girl is sorta floating in a wierd way.

The pose of the woman on the left is really stiff and doesn't give us much info about what's happening. Why have her there at all, then? Perhaps she should be touching/interacting with the guy, or at least have more of an expression. I think it;s mostly that back arm.. it;s doing nothing, just hanging there. Even the woman on the left could be more sinuous and less rigid. If the left girl and guy come together in the composition, perhaps we could push back the other girl (in distance, shadow, detail, etc) so that everything isn;t fighting for dominance in the composition.

The guy needs a body!? I suppose you know this!

Lastly, you need a touch of high saturation to help the composition, and it shouldn;t be the foliage because that isn;t important.

All that green text formulated from the crab brain you have in that d/ic/k head of yours and STILL failed to provide anything of substance...like the work you never graced us with.

>You'll probably want to study some colour and light for starters.
I've done some colour studies from photographs, how else could I work on my colours?
>Your perspective isn't too bad but it seems you were rushing it at some places.
yup
>First thing that came to mind when I saw the second image was Dali.
weird, he wasn't my inspiration at all hahaha
I was inspired by el greco, mostly for jesus' skin and general tension
>>3348162
>Work with bigger brushes moving to smaller
I've color blocked with shapes insetad of brushes. Is that bad? I like how solid it makes my painting look.
>Looks almost likes pixel art at this point
true
but to be fair, the original is 10000 pixels in height, so a 1:1 print would'nt look so detailed.
but since I won't print it, I was stupid for making a canvas this big

>It's too saturated, tone it down a bit
noted
>Also, paint using reference more often.
I did use reference but I didn't pay much attention to the colours in the ref, I'll do that next time

thanks guys

Twenty minute work (sketch?) with reference, trying to git gud at female bodies. Critique welcomed and appreciated.

>>3352148
That's good, but I would darken the area around her, especially the areas where there is strong highlights, like the hip on her left side, she seems to be blending in the background, I don't do digital so I can't tell you exactly what to do, but that's what I would focus on. Another thing is the neck area, it kinda looks unfinished compared to the rest of her, it has a bit blockier shadows/highlights akin to broad brush strokes, which although I prefer, don't match up to the polished body (compare the jawline to the shadows on her asis)

i like the lighting scheme a lot, the light below the cross almost makes it seem a hole rather than a protuberance, which gives the impression of 'holiness' lol, but it actually does.

bit worried that the figure won't be of the same quality as all the relatively easy stuff everywhere else and it will ruin the finished piece. so make sure it don't, i guess.

bit worried about the colours too when it comes to lighting the scene, there seems to be some room for dissonance, again mainly concerning the figure of christ.
