IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Work on your environment there a bit more, really try to get some basic depth established. More contrast with your darks in the foreground, with things lightening up and going less contrast in the back, once you get stuff in there.

I see you've got these rocky shapes in but the one on the left isn't really pushing itself forward, it's kinda flattened out. I think the darker values on the dino are making it pop out more than the rock, but the shape is in front of the foot, and the whole thing is just sort of melding into the grey you've got for the ground. You don't want both the rocks having the same amount of contrast if one is in front of the dinosaur and the other is behind. You'll wanna get some variety in the ground too and put something in the back there.

You might want to do a bit more for his shadow, maybe just scuffle a bit of tone in there under him, the one strip from the foot isn't doing it. Smooth out his tail some, it's still kind of stringy looking, try to keep the form reading with less strokes.

Your dinosaur is looking pretty good though so far. Can't say for sure if you messed up the anatomy, I dunno. His left forearm is a bit chunky, but maybe it's fine.

The tops of the rocks being level is bothering me a bit, maybe lower the back one some or raise the front one.

>> No.3349541

>>3349364

Good lord. Use layers, paint in your background without making a total mess of it. Draw a proper circle on another layer and mask in your sphere and then clip a layer to paint your values. Do your core shadow and just gradually lighten away from it. Just use a soft brush and a soft eraser.

Go to ctrlpaint website and learn how layers work, and painting in general

It's difficult because you don't know how your medium works, you don't know how to render, you can't control your edges, and you're probably rushing way too much considering you bothered posting something that messy.

Yeah it looks good. Stuff like strathmore bristol and mayfair seems to work well. Generally the heavy, rough, expensive stuff.

I've seen people use mineral spirits to blend, but I've never gotten a good result. From my experience just using a bit with a q-tip as was suggested, it just made the back of my paper translucent, and gave me a headache, no blending. I've heard you can use like a copic blending marker, so you could give that a shot. You could also just stick to grinding in your top layer with a colourless blender pencil.

Yes, how can you improve or even learn anything in the first place by doing something you already know how to do? You won't make any progress without pushing yourself beyond your skill level.

>> No.3350660

>>3350586
In "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", there's a chapter where she talks about her classes. At the beginning, she'd get everyone to draw themselves. Later on, after spending a lot of time going through all the basics and fundamentals, she'd get them to draw themselves again. I think this is an extremely helpful thing, especially for people like you and I who are learning on their own, since a lot of people want to draw for various reasons but don't define their goals properly. This allows you to have a clear thing to work towards, whether it's drawing people or drawing mechanical objects or drawing nature.

You don't have to draw yourself, you could easily take a photo of a building or a car or something you like from real life and attempt to draw it. Then, after practicing on your lines, forms, shapes for a week or so, come back and try to draw that same photo. It'll help you see how your grinding has paid off and where you can go next.

This is spoken from the perspective of someone who's a beginner who's spending his NEET schedule between drawing and jacking off, so feel free to completely ignore my recommendation, but books like "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and "Keys to Drawing" both recommend something similar so you can have a way of defining goals and achieving them.

It's fine to work on your lines, but when doing perspective you want it to be straight so that it also helps develop your eye. It's probably okay if you want to freehand, but once you move on to Olsen and Robertson stuff you'll want to be a lot more precise and a ruler becomes more necessary. Of course once you have the concepts down you can freehand, but building an eye for it by using a ruler is essential.

Please critique! I just started using Procreate on the iPad and am having a lot of trouble blending. For the boots, I completely forgot to use a soft brush for blending but I actually prefer the way they came out compared to the rendering on the t-shirt.
Also I took a lot of time with the proportions of it all and still somehow got the front boot looking strange.
Questions:
How do artists use soft brush for blending while still achieving a professional looking result? More often than not I felt the rendering on the t shirts came out muddy and amateurish.
What is the best way to blend? I used the eye dropper tool and haphazardly drew back and forth with lowered opacity until it looked OK. This was difficult as the pen pressure controls the opacity on the brushes.
What should the background and foreground be for this? I drew this on a shitty ikea bedside table.
Final Question: what is the process for drawing fabric? I blocked in approximate locations of shadows but they ALL ended up being wrong. At the end I just kind of winged it. Is it actually possible to draw fabric 1:1 without making approximations?

/beg/ tier myself so take my advice with a grain of salt- I think you are on the right track. Issues -proportions are looking good short of some of the angles of the arms and hip (our left)
good starting with the hard brushes, but your shadows are the wrong hue/value . e.g. the crotch has a slightly orange reddish hue in the ref whereas all your shadows are just a muddy gray. also her breasts are not the same "skin" color. fix these up and start with a soft brush. also the darkest shadows are not right but Im assuming you will add those in as this is a WIP. Keep on going and just pay more attention to the reference. Make sure you are using perceived values as opposed to your mind's local values for the skin.

Here's some real advice fags:

Don't do tutorials. Make compositions. Think of a drawing or painting you want to make and do it. Don't just start throwing shit on a canvas. Plan it out and sketch each element individually. Like, if your painting has an apple in it, go look at an apple and start sketching it on sketch pad.

What's the best way to do a "study" of something to actually improve?

I've been reading head and hands and I want to learn the planes of the face so i've been looking a lot at the asaro head

When I draw it, should I construct it or just draw it as I see it? I constructed pic related but I noticed I started leaning on the reference more than the construction itself, any tips?

Also I don't know how to render or anything I just wanted to see what it would look like with some dark areas and a pen outline so please excuse that

No. Using things like rulers and compasses or French curves is cheating. Straight lines and perfect circles don’t exist in real life. Using a ruler is pretty much tracing something that doesn’t exist.

I would take Drawabox with a couple grains of salt because he basically took dynamic sketching classes and then resold them for a profit while changing stuff based on his understanding of the subject matter. There's a reason why Drawabox has you grind boxes while Dynamic Sketching classes pass through that quickly and get to the real stuff.

>Should I be slowly tracing the lines, meticulously like a tattoo artist
That confidence comes with time but I think it more applies to traditional because of the friction with the medium and drawing utensil.
>just kinda guesstimate the angle first and slap it down on the tablet
This is the skill you'll be training from drawing, whether it be traditional or digital. You'll rotate the canvas to your most natural axis of rotation. You'll still c-z or redo it multiple times but that's what you're working toward. Get a bunch of paper and use some ink, whether it be from a brush, ballpoint, brush pen, marker, whatever. Get confidence in your lines so that you know exactly what you're going to do before you draw something and your body will follow.

You don't need a tablet with a screen to draw fine. As long as it's at least a medium you'll have no issues if you practice. Draw points on a canvas and connect them, draw a single point on a canvas and draw lines from other places on that canvas into the center. Place three dots on the canvas and draw a curve that goes tangent through the points. There are a ton of drills you can practice for your hand-eye coordination.

I'm trying to do colors again, but it seems off. I can see the nose should be higher and the mouth maybe should be higher too.

But i don't really know how to render things like hair with color (so the lineart is varely visible).

Any help? i want to get an effect more similar to classsic painting... but I don't know how.

quick tip for i just realised myself

if you want to find the best position, posture-wise, how far you should sit near/far from the edge of the seat:

holding your drawing tool of choice, push down on the paper with all your weight, as if someone just turned on high gravity.
effectively you "fall down" and support your entire self with the pencil as a "cane"

from there, scoot back or forward and adjust shoulder height and such , lean head in more or less.

after adjusting, you now have the exact position you can return to in relation to gravity that creates a mark on the paper.

it should feel natural, if not just ignore all this

Good work anon! Your lines are wobbly try to make them as straight as possible. Don't try to just draw a shape as fast as possible. Try to take your time to make the lines straight as possible.

>> No.3352084

>>3351407
Practice drawing straight lines too anon. Try to make the lines as straight as you can. Fill a page doing that too. DON'T RUSH.

I saw a video on Youtube where a crocodile fucking bit the leg off another crocodile and then ate it, the crocodile just had a fucking leg missing afterwards he wans't sure what to do. It's strange because crocodiles dont really show pain very much unlike humans it's really obvious when we're in pain. it probably hurt him so much but you just couldn't tell that he felt any different.

You saw it too?

and honestly how do you know that if they dont show any feelings? they could feel pain 100x the amount we do, he could be such agonising debilitating pain but we don't know because we're not crocodiles

>>3352154
Oh absolutely they feel pain, just don't show it in the sense that we do. They don't have vocal chords to yell and their minds are different when dealing with pain, single task thinking if you get me, so more of a survivalist response than a panic response per say

Pretty sure there some sort of research on it you can look up, but desu I think its more of a broad grouping of reptiles based on their craniums, reptiles as a majority aren't focused on problem solving

Try to do grayscale first, you have problems with brushwork, values and initial lay-in.

Fun with a pencil helps with construction. Helps you think in 3D too. Apply what you learn to your drawings and it will help with the flatness and proportions.

how do you convincingly draw, like, the interaction of a face and hand or a hand grasping a wrist or just anything like that? always fucks me up unless it's a situation where there's a clear difference of value or color. when i look at a photo reference the answer seems to be 'the brain knows those are two distinct body parts and can tell them apart'. and i can't make that happen with drawings, ex i feel like this hand is melding into face Society-style.

Dont think so.
But i would, your sketches are great!

Well you can't exactly quantify or identify the metaphysical "feeling" of something so there's no way to know, but crocs have tiny brains and are stupid as shit, they operate pretty much purely on instinct. It wouldn't be surprising if they simply aren't really wired to have much pain since they're usually pretty unchallenged, so avoiding danger isn't *as* important to them. You have to remember that pain is an evolved reaction, and it wouldn't exist without a purpose, if the croc isn't doing anything in response what would be the point of the pain signal? Obviously it does feel pain and i'm sure it felt pretty shitty, but it certainly is possible they just don't feel as much pain.

>> No.3352827

>>3352825
forgot I was also going to say the croc eating the other croc's leg was likely a demonstration of their instinctive nature and extreme stupidity, the croc's mouth was just near the other croc's leg and it probably automatically opened up, clamped down and spun around because that's just what they do.

I am though, could it be just a lack of practice?

With that I mean, shitty linework aside (and in this case, shitty fixing aside), I use the construction learned on that book both for the head and the body, and the face. Although obviously im not going for the cartoonish style. But still, I can obviously see that the drawing feels lifeless and flat, but could it be just because I havent practiced long enough and thus im not getting the right proportions?

Im doing the cubes thing now, but will post results probably on the next thread. Trying to practice clean lines. Pic not related.
