These were done on a cheap 7x10 watercolor sketchbook by Canson, which is fine for lighter washes and when not using too much water. I just bought a new sketchbook but opted for a Strathmore Visual Journal this time, haven't used it yet but the paper feels much nicer than the Canson (and was just as cheap).

I like the spiral notebook option because it's a simple and quick setup, but if you want to use higher quality paper (or you want to paint larger pieces) you should opt for pads of cotton paper that you can then cut down to the size you need. Arches is what most people will recommend, Fabriano Artistico is apparently just as good, but much cheaper.

For paints I use mostly Daniel Smith tubes, plus a few Winsor & Newton and Holbein tubes (W&N offers 5ml tubes too, which are good cheaper option).

That said, I painted these with Kuretake watercolor, I just bought their Gansai Tanbi 36 color set after seeing it recommended over and over. I normally avoid dry watercolor, but people claimed these were high quality and I figured for $29 I'd give them a shot. They ARE very high quality, the colors are rich, there's a lot of variety, and they definitely don't feel like your typical dry watercolor. I'd recommend them for a beginner since they'll get you a large selection without murdering your wallet like tubed paints would.

For brushes I typically use a size 3 da Vinci blue squirrel hair mop brush, a size 6 Grumbacher round brush, and I'll soon be buying a size 6 winsor and Newton pointed round brush.

Look up "citizen sketcher supplies" and check out the first link, the guy is a very good urban sketchers and he has a constantly updated page describing his entire setup. It should give you plenty of ideas.

Btw you can look up everything I mentioned on Amazon to see prices and reviews.

Oh, btw when I say "tube paint" I mean that I put some of the paint from the tube into plastic half pans (you can get a bunch of them for cheap), then stick a whole set of them into a tin case. I use a Meeden one, which comes with 12 pans, I removed them and shoved 24 half pans in it (took some brute force, but it worked out)

Looks like from what youve erased you are trying to draw the body too symmetric, since his face is at such an angle you should try making the shoulders more asymmetric and accentuate the traps more

I just started doing those bold outlines, I think I've mostly been practicing bravery with my lines rather than overthinking things. Sometimes it ends up poopy or dumb, and sometimes it looks pretty cool! I think you should just spend some free time drawing people around you if you're in a public space. Try to do it in quick strokes to get down the gestural feel. That helps me anyway

Thanks! For character design, I did some reading and collected a few references relevant to the ideas: Indian Magician and Indian Shadowdancer. The key is to extract and simplify functional and decorative elements to something you're vaguely familiar with.

Also, Bridgman is great. Think about how he simplified and merged the shapes, and abstract it to your character design ideas.
