IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

He's probably talking about how one line overlaps another and creates a T. Like the line of the pectoral hits the deltoid there, and makes a T. The top of the T looks like it's above, whereas the line that hits the other and stops looks like it goes under.

Just look for T shapes where lines meet and you'll see how it shows different forms overlapping.

This could be an animated insert in a david lynch movie. Like Rabbits. This is fucking eerie and I have no idea is it supposed to be or has the artist mental health problems.

Your weakness is drawing. Everything is out of perspective, flat and disproportionate, and nothing has line variety or value. You can almost feel anons constant pencil pressuring your face as you look at the work. So focus on that.

As far as the story goes it's like Inland Empire I've seen that movie like three times and have absolutely no clue whatsoever what is supposed to be going on.

Never posted on /ic/ before and I need some help.
I like drawing in Paint with black and white but I want to take it to the next level.

A friend lent a tablet, I want to start practicing manga styled black/white drawings with the tablet. With panels and everything.
I'm looking to sort of imitate Berserk styled violence.

First of all, what program do I install? All I have and ever used was Paint.
Second, is there a specific recommended guide for this?
Third (if the guide doesn't cover it), what resolutions should I be using in attempt to imitate a manga page?

It might help a bit with line control.

One exercise I like to do is to draw a sheet of circles of various shapes and sizes, with just a little bit of space in between. Then, quickly but steadily, try to draw a line basically around and through the gaps without actually going inside the circles. Another exercise is placing two or more dots and trying to connect them in a stroke. Some straight lines, some curves, etc. It's harder than it sounds, especially with a tablet.

If you want to doodle anime pictures that's fine, but it's not going to teach you how to draw a head properly. You need to be trying to accurately copy things from a reference. I hope you didn't drop out of university to draw, because even if you can learn (and some people just can't), and you do practice your ass off every day, you've probably got a good 5+ years at least before you'll be good enough to work. You see a lot of people throwing things around like 'this guy went professional in 2/3 years', and that is really misleading. Maybe if you've been doodling your whole life and you've got some latent skill built up, but you're like square 1 can't draw a straight line to save your life here.

If you're that depressed and emotional I doubt you're going to have your head in a good space where you're working hard and studying properly every day either.

Like, I'm kind of hoping that this is a troll or bait post. I don't want to hurt your feelings if it isn't, but don't put your life on hold yet for art. What were you doing in school? Can you go back, or were you flunking anyway? Maybe take something easier in college that'll give you a safety net, where you can have a decent job. I know a guy who went to school and became a pharmacist, started learning late and he's better than me (which is embarrassing because I was NEET practicing for a while before I went to school).

The whole idea of putting your life on hold to just work on art isn't necessarily going to work. There's a good chance that you're just gonna sit around miserable watching youtube and procrastinating. If you already had a decent skill level and you knew how to practice I'd be more encouraging, but you're at an age in your life where you can't put all your eggs in the art basket when there's no guarantee you're going to get anything out of it.

Just get a normal life going and keep working on art a couple hours a day in your spare time.

I've been thinking it would be better to be homeless and just draw.

I know i shouldn't expect to get good to work any time soon, i am however fortunate to live in a country with a pretty reputable CG/2D animation school with super low costs so my goal is to get good enough to enter there and then another 3,5years at the school.

I believe the key thing you are doing wrong is that you aren't thinking about three-dimensional shapes but just about lines.
The idea behind the faces in Loomis' book is that you learn this three-dimensional construction on a very simple face. This way you don't have to worry too much about proportions or anatomy.

These are pretty wonky. Maybe just work on your basic forms? Like your spheres and cylinders and cubes. You really want everything you draw to be correct. I know that's a lot to ask when you're just starting out, but you really need to draw things accurately.

Like your spheres at the top, the outside circles are all fucked up, the lines don't wrap around smoothly or correctly. The box you did, the lines don't meet up with the corners properly, some aren't straight. You know how the lines are supposed to look, erase it until you get it right. Everything you should be drawing right now should be a picture you're copying or something in front of you, so you should always have something to look at to say 'this doesn't match, I did something wrong and I need to correct it'.

Check out the drawabox website and work though the stuff there. Just try to draw everything clean and correct. Take your time with things. You don't draw with your hand, you draw with your eyes, your hand is just doing the work. Look and think before you start moving your hand.

Get the book Keys to Drawing, it's much better for teaching you how to draw, Fun with a Pencil is just an old book for kids.

Work through art books, it looks like you've just been bullshitting for a year. You need guidance.

Also doing all that dramatic shit like getting rid of all your stuff is very stupid and unnatural, it's overdramatic. Don't try to be a hero on day one it isn't realistic. Instead I would recommend making drawing a gradual part of your daily activities, start with just an hour a day, over the weeks, increase to 2 hours, 3 hours, etc. If you try to draw 5-10 hours a day right away you will most likely just get overwhelmed and quit completely.

With colored pencils you're pretty dependent on which exact colours you have. It's not like paint where you can do a ton with just a red, a yellow, and tints/shades.

Don't use saturated colours, if you have a range of greys, do a value map, and blend some colour in over it. Even if the colours aren't exact, the value and lack of strong saturation will keep it 'believable'.

I don't want to be one of those justdraw fags, but it's true. Try to find pictures of real girls doing similar expressions to what you want to draw and see where their features are placed. Also try to think about how the head itself moves when your character's jaw drops or they look up etc. Also perspective is important if you want the character to be facing away from the viewer to any degree. Do you construct your heads or just draw them freehand?

Can I see some more of your faces? I kind of like them but would also like to have more of a basis for my critiques.

Yes it teaches you about construction. Don't just draw a couple of things for each page. Grind that shit out. For like one page of drawing spheres try to fill 3 - 5 pages of paper or until you get really good at it. Trust me reading and doing a couple of sketches per excercise isn't going to help you, You need to grind that shit into your brain until you can do it from memory.

Drawing from the elbow is fine too. When you do this exercise try to fill the whole page. I don't mean make page wide lines but to fill out the whole page until there is barely any white left. I just finished reading your posts; I think you should go back if you can.
Things losing meaning, I'm feeling it too. But I think that's just an easy thing to happen when we're young and have been raised seeing the work of masters. I've made it my goal to socialize more and I've made more genuine friends at my day job then any other time I can remember and that gives a little meaning by itself, or at least some comfort, while I decide what I want to do.
It'll be easier to talk with people who're in the same boat as you and that's why I think you should go through with your original studies, it can make a stable foundation so you can be calm before deciding on what to do next; maybe with someone you connected with?

If you don't want to do that, or if it's impossible, then one thing you have to not do is constantly worry, it's hard to learn in the long run if you're stressed.

I'd say keep doing what you have here, but be 50 times more specific when you draw, which means taking a lot more time per drawing. You still have symbol drawing habits and they way I got rid of them was spending a LONG time on every single detail, comparing the picture with the drawing all the time.

Who the fuck takes an entire day to get good at drawing basic lines and shapes? That shit only takes 30 minutes to do.
And how does doing hardwork == autism

Did you need help with something?
If you just wanted to show people your work post it in draw thread next time.

Anon before moving on to 3D shapes. You should really practice 2d shapes and lines first.

Your islands belie a lack of understanding of basic geographic principles.

Rick Burlew, who used to write for Wizards of the Coast, wrote a good shorthand guide to geography for fantasy mappers.

Its good for a doodle. The lines on the chin and collar are wobbly. The shading on the eyes makes it look like the head is caved in. Practice basic shapes and lines to get rid of wobbly lines.

Wow. I guess you have the answer to evrything anon. If you're not here for critiq or help go post your shit in the Draw thread. Ignoring construction and measuring just because it "kills the flow" is stupid anon.

All the heads look crooked and slanted to the right. Did you use construction? Don't draw a feature first then add in lines for construction. Go to the Artbook thread and download the beginner books. Start with Fun with a Pencil.

Calm down
I’m taking measurements and also doing construction, my point is I don’t need to be super accurate because I’m not a machine, there was a time I was obsessed with it.

Now go cry somewhere else

Does anyone have good tutorials on how to make stuff shiny? I don't feel ready to do material studies yet.

It can be worse. At least it vaguely resembles a humanoid shape and shadows have been considered

Anybody wanna buddy up? I work 9-5 EST and I want to draw a minimum of an hour a day.

This was some of the last stuff I drew before I quit for the unteenth time. Maybe having a friend can help me stay focused.
