First you have to define "get better", but if you can't figure that out then it just sounds like you want someone else's efforts to be a loose guide that does the thinking for you. A lot of the context for his studies is missing with the lack of forum posts he made alongside them but it doesn't require much critical thinking on your part to get a sense of what he's trying to figure out with a given study.

I'm gonna assume you weren't actually around to see Dave's blog where posted up his daily study routine/streams (last I checked a lot of the images were dead) but at first glance it was essentially the same as appleflinger, you gotta put your thinking cap on dude.

Having time for things aside from drawing is important, though. Drawing for the sake of drawing is like learning to speak for the sake of words. No one cares if your speech is eloquent if you don't say anything worthwhile.

Algen definitely has the technical aspects down. He would probably benefit immensely from taking a year or two off to travel and experience things.

Thank god, maybe I'm sane. I'd say it's only arguably correct if you argue that the exaggeration was done to give the figure a particular shape.. which you could I suppose.

Sometimes I think the problem with images like this is that the level of rendering is too high for the level of sacrificing realism to aesthetics. In this case, to composition (could be concept, emotion, other things). So what you get is a superrealistic shell wrapped around an abstracted structure. The rendering needs to be simpler or more abstract for it to work if you're going to exaggerate the pose like that. Of course, I'm assuming it was all intentional which it may not be.

It's really nice piece in a lot of ways. I like the contrast of scifi and fantasy, the details in the floor, and the cold palette.

If you want perfect accuracy take a photo or render out some 3d scan, the only point in making art is to say something within the medium, which includes fucking the anatomy however you desire. I'm not so hung up on accuracy, it's possible to distort and make it look good, in fact it;s necessary, and it's possible to distort and fail. There's also a subjective element to it. To me, she looks like a worm and it has a negative effect on the painting, it doesn't look intentional, and I think that if you fixed it, it wouldn't detract from the flow or compostion. For other people, the anatomical alteration may seem justified, or they just don't notice.

I'd say the cloth does look silk like, silk isn't always super tight/thin, but whatever it's intended to be, you can actually see some of the outlines of her leg, though it's unclear around the butt area. But the real problem is that there's no anatomical arrangement that makes sense within the boundary of the fabric, and all I can imagine is the distored body that must lie beneath. Perhaps if you made it all fluffy and billowy you could make that argument.

>>3347412

I was talking to my buddy Dan the other day and you know what I told him? I told him, I said, look... I've got it all figured out. I got it.
You know what was missing?
STRONG.
DRAWINGS.
Read my lips. It's strong drawings. I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it. And I said to him. I said... I starting looking around. Looking around at the... at all the other artists out there. And it's all the same! There's no strong drawings out there! And it's a shame. A real shame. These people. They're not doing their best. They just don't have the drawing down! Many such cases!

Those aren't concept art pieces you idiot. TGC illustrations like what Brad Rigney mostly does usually DO have a month long deadline.

Yeah they do have a long deadline, but they also often have a set price per piece finished, so if you had the choice to complete say 8 photobashed and 3d based illustrations and earn say 800$ (if each one is 100) in a month or would you slave away at one single painting for 1 month for 100$ because of "muh art"
Use your brain for once.

I didn't say it wasn't more profitable for the artist, the anon (you?) I replied to was making the argument that "your client would rather have you be done in a day rather than say 1 month."
which is utter nonsense when it's an illustration with a month long deadline. Obviously the client would prefer you to spend as much time as possible within said deadline and produce the best work possible, rather than a rushed 1 day photobash. Use your brain for once instead of always trying to be right.

Also, it's not 100$ per illustration, it's around 1000-1500$ per illustration. So you should probably make sure to deliver a product that looks like it's at least somewhat worth that money. Now, obviously someone as established as Brad Rigney, who has worked for MTG since forever and has proven that he can deliver good looking, consistent photobashes doesn't have to worry about that, but if say someone like you got their foot in the door at MTG or Applibot and you send them a 1 day photobash that looks every bit like it's worth a 100 bucks, it will most likely be your first and last job from them.

I like Algen for the most part but I don't think his art fits MTG at-fucking-all. I really liked the ol "textbook/religious illumination book" style the old cards had. It wasn't the best art but it really fit the feel of MTG so much more.

That's not just Algen though, but rather a general shift in art style as more and more of the new generation of illustrators replaced the old ones.
