Still trying to set up the color and lighting scheme. I think this looks better than the blue-green shadow under the hair. If I'm going to have cool light shining on her it should be warm shadows anyway right? I'm also considering making the parts laying on her cheeks not pressed up against her face and sticking out like a high collar instead.

Write these down on a piece of paper or a post it note and stick it next to your monitor:

What do you think on composition? Is it stupid to put those men right at her head?
I want a feeling of a guarded princess, can't explain it better. The background will be in deep shadow.

I think you need to start mixing your colors before you apply them to the canvas. the gray of the mountains is sort of dead and the greenish yellow doesn't really give a good, organic impression of the coast, same with the red/pink in the lower left. the color of the sea is also almost unmixed.

I know it's a bit of a cop out answer, but a lot of speed comes from repetition and experience. Once you get a familiar workflow things start to slot into place more efficiently.

Still, for a general tip: Work from big to small, and don't start adding in little details until you're very confident everything is where it needs to be. The better your sketch is before rendering, the easier / quicker rendering will be. Fixing rendered shit takes a lot longer, and sometimes you need to do things all over again. Some people are fine with problem solving like that during the rendering stage, but it's time consuming.

Work the whole image while rendering. That is to say, zoom in, work on something for a bit, zoom out and work somewhere else. It can be easy to get focused on one area until it's 'just right' and if you do that constantly you'll never be finished.

Also layers can make things really fast or really slow depending on how you handle them. Stupid amounts of time can be spend navigating haphazard layers and if you put something on the wrong layer it can be a bitch to fix. Personally I have a hotkey for create new layer and the one beside it for merge down, I tend to use 'temp layers' for specific things and then merge them down, though I might keep 'foreground - midground - background' for a painting or a separate line and color layer for a while. If you need to keep a lot of layers, have layer folders. Sometimes I'll duplicate layers and throw them in a 'backup' folder before merging things or making big changes, though, which can help if you really fuck something up.

While I was working on it I had a feeling of familiarity but I thought it was something else. I thought she resembled Illyana Rasputin from X Men because of the blonde hair and style of bangs.

Certain areas give me this jolt of reality-feel. The clouds, the four layers (clouds, mountains, church and foreground), the green under the church, the purple/blue on the top left, the tiny bit of horizon bottom left. I like it! That being said, the whole of the picture doesn't give a good impression, although the colors work in a weird green/purple way. I think you can do something good eventually. The clouds are really good, already. Just noticed the outline on the mountains, is this Brian?

I would’ve waited for a later stage to add secondary lighting but I’m guessing you’re mocking up to get your palette down. Color pick you base colors and lay them next to each other, really depends on what you’re going for but all that cool makes her face look really warm if hats what you want.

A or C. I would go with A for a finished piece, but with additional contours/hatching for the tomatoes for consistency. Right now, the pot in the middle stands out as the point of interest because it's the most detailed object.
C could look better if there was less grain in the shaded areas.

>I’m guessing you’re mocking up to get your palette down
Yes this. All the light and shadows are on separate layers so when I start trying to render it I can still take it step by step, but to avoid it getting muddy and weird like my paintings often do I want to have a plan.
I don't know if I necessarily want her to look too warm. I like how it makes her face stand out but if it looks jarring I'll change it. There are places where I haven't really painted the colored light on her that it should be, which will probably cool her down more. But do you think I should adjust something now?

Try to use green-grayish tones for the face shadows. That way you could reduce the relative warmness of the face, make the light more consistent and have a more coherent colour scheme.
Even if this is just a mock, right now, the hair looks as if it's from a different head. Zoomed out it doesn't read badly, but up-close it's really obvious.

Depends on what you’re going for with the character IMO. Great art tells a story and the story in getting is she’s some kind of tropical magical princess like Nadia or that girl from disney’s Atlantis. This is entirely subjective of course and based on my experiences and tastes, but I feel the warm sunkissed face with blonde hair gives a tropical vibe, like a surfer chick.

Haha, tropical settings are my favorite, I wonder if it bled into this. I definitely wanted to go for a magical princess/queen vibe but I think I better make her paler. I want her to seem a little evil, so it would probably work better if she looked like she didn't get much sun.
At the same time this is just a color and painting exercise so if I don't get it perfect it's fine. But I'll use it to learn as much as I can.

I'd say there's a bit of fighting (compositionally) between the two light sources, maybe make the warrior less prominent. Or, make the warrior more prominent and the statue more subtle. If you go the second route, I'd say the guy is crammed too far down, maybe add more floor beneath him.

As far as the rendering goes, the figure obv needs the most refinement, but I'd say the statue is basically done, maybe just some detailing on the flame and the face here and there.

This is dope, the texture is really nice.

also, since you're having issues with lines, there are a couple of things that happen that make our minds see lines:
the values/hues actually match, but it's actually our mind connecting lines we know should be there (this is the hardest case, because optically, we can't see it and it's real easy as an artist to just overtly state the line since we know that there should be a physical division between forms)
and the other case is a change in value and hue, if it doesn't look right in this case, you might be missing a cast shadow/reflected light, etc.

>how to render without it looking like a dirty blob without linework
In my experience it's very hard to avoid that look by simply turning off the line layer. It's much easier to create a new layer on top of the line work and continue painting. In the process the lines that aren't needed will naturally get concealed, and the ones that were important can be emphasized in various ways (hard edge, sharp value jump, etc).

If you approach it that way, you could lower the opacity of the line layer first, but I don't think that's needed most of the time. I'd personally opt to first darken the lines for the hair before painting on top.

Try looking towards artists you like that have a similar subject matter to what you're working on, place it side by side with yours and critically judge what they're doing differently. Part of their final product is dependent on their workflow, but a lot can be emulated from whatever starting block you're more comfortable with.

The sun of this world was their god,
The god died and his blood fell to the earth, and the world was shrouded in eternal night.
The people of the world found that the blood of the dead god could be burned similarly to magnesium, but with a much slower burn, and with magical properties.
Eating the blood gems grants you the ability to cast spells, but also slowly corrupts you with radiation if go don’t have the correct protective armour.
The “knightly” force of nobility has this armour, which is itself imbued/ lined with the god’s ichor. (Which costs more than a medium sized castle in their world)

It’s their job to hunt those who go savage after abusing a hunger for the blood and power.

Basically a whole plot following a group of these knights, and then the backplot is that another one of the “god’s” species smells the blood, and wishes to consume the planet and remains of the dead being.

Super early in the process but it’s a fun way to foll out a portfolio.

Pay attention to your saturation, edges, and contrasts. Missing the ball on the three of them creates muddy looking images. Also note that I didn't introduce new colours to your image, just amped up the saturation.
Honestly right now I suggest you start your paintings in black and white and then move to colour. Will help you focus on values and colour separately while you get used to using the two of them.
I included the black and white version so that you can see that the contrast in values on the face makes it a focal point, with the sword as a secondary focal point.

Also obviously the saturation is very exaggerated but like the previous anons said you should push yourself to the limit first and then once you've learned to control that, tone it back a bit where you see fit.

Has anybody else had trouble with "overthinking" a drawing?

For the past 5 or so years I've noticed that I've been thinking more and more about the more technical aspects of a drawing, like the anatomy and proportions and staying on-model and whatnot. While that on its own isn't a bad thing, I seem to be thinking about it too much and forget that drawing is supposed to be """"fun"""" and to let shit flow out naturally. Basically I've become an extreme perfectionist to the point where I'm strangling my own drawing capability and not getting anything done.

I've found that the less I think about the drawing and the more I just fucking draw, the more fun I have with the drawing and the more satisfied I am with the end-result. It feels like when I deliberately shut most of my brain off, things come out better and that just seems very strange to me.

Maybe I just need to fucking chill, but at the same time I worry that my drawing skills will get worse if I DON'T think about the more technical aspects enough.

nice. when you're using soft brush, i'm not sure if you went for a blur or not on the hand. get used to making a new layer for soft brush work, erasing the parts you don't need with a hard eraser, and then merging that down. it's the nature of digital when you can only achieve smoother transitions by cutting away the parts you don't want with an eraser. or use the selection/lasso to only paint in that area yet still use long strokes.
