IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Honestly I don't know why I still have this grainyness when digi painting, how could I get rid of that? Maybe with tablet I could make more smooth works.

The thing is that the place where the sand\dirt supposed to be , it just awfully grainy, like you can see each one of my strokes. How could I get over that? Studying?

Also how's my lighting game? Its the first time I did try lights . Later I realized I should've stretched out the area the lights of the gates effect, and I will do it when I'll continue...

Idk any kind of constructive criticism is welcome...

I can't do hair and I think that's because I can't paint. Will learning painting help with lineart? Painting first and then trying to simplify the painting with crosshatches or the other way around?

Think of hair as a volume, block it out similar to constructing a human with simple forms. Also her right (left side of image) eye makes her look like she has a lazy eye. And her left arm is broken.

Digital painters usually but not always start with a sketch and then paint over it.

I think what that anon was trying to say was that you have to think of hair as ribbons. I don't know about your hair, but mine definitely clumps to a certain extent, enough to differentiate blocks of strands.

Anyways, you can see in pic related that the artist hardly shows individual strands, but instead implies through breaking apart the ribbons.

You're getting there. About as much as could be expected.
You're having the contours go a bit much over the edges, and you're also missing having them on the surface of the forms.
The bends you're trying to incorporate, seem a bit above your present skillset, I'd advise keeping the contours simple and uniform until you can "nail it" then try to get more fancy with them.

Also if you're not yielding results, don't worry. It comes easier when perspective just "clicks" and you get it.
Keep at it, you're doing fine.

don't even bother with shading. work on drawing accurately. measure and learn to use your eye. read dodson's "keys to drawing" for some things to look at like plumb lines and relationships. think of the body in volume and not as contours, you'll want to learn on construction to make your pictures look better. also you already know but sketch out some gesture more, even pre-planning a drawing like the one you're doing.

Nose has been elongated, look up rule of thirds. Shadow shapes are wrong so you don't feel the true volume.

Note I'm not talking about the composition rule of thirds but the proportions of the face. They are addressed on the video. Watch it.

Squint more when you draw, try to get the shadow shapes in right size and proportion that's the key to getting likeness.

I'd say at least get a good sketch book, a decent range of good quality pencils, and a kneaded eraser. If you stock up well it'll cost you maybe 30 bucks. A nice light 2H pencil for roughing things in and the kneaded eraser are your best friends. Cheap copy paper will be hard to work with as it doesn't erase well, and won't take layers of pencil for value. I usually get woodbridge sketch pads. Don't get an overpriced fancy sketch book.

Alternatively you could get some Conte 2B charcoal pencils and a big cheap pad of newsprint.

You can totally draw away with whatever you've got though and learn just fine. Stay away from lined paper though, keep it blank. When you're just starting out you're going to make a mess of everything anyway. It's good to start learning with proper materials as soon as you can though so you get a feel for how they're supposed to work.

Back to the ladder after a week or so being busy.

The next exercise in Keys to Drawing had a quick sketch exercise for shading, and I realized I don't understand sketching at all. not that anon, but reading is good, and understanding of theory helps make your practice more guided and therefore more efficient.

The big thing is just using your time wisely, the dudes that make it on this board stop playing games, they stop watching TV, and they draw in their spare time, because they are hungry for that success.
They don't ask how many times they have to draw the hand to get it right, they just draw as many as it takes. They read as much as it takes and they study as much as it takes. Once you start counting the cost of how many hours you need to put into this skill to become a professional, you will lose all motivation. Average work ethic attracts average people and average jobs.

Just keep your head down and draw/ read and study as long as it takes and you/'ll make it. Fuck the crabs.

I'm at a dead end and I've only taken my first step. Where do I start? I've got two hours a day I could easy spend time drawing, but I'm at a legitimate loss as to what to do. Do I draw upside down Picasso sketches for two hours a day, seven days a week? Draw circles and straight lines? I wanna get good but my autism is too intense for me to be able to start without making a solid schedule of what I have to do.

its nice, but try to simplify more, it will help you remember the form and understand it better. your outline right now is pretty chicken scratched. hands and arms are looking good. legs are starting to get a little sausage like, so look out for that and try to really capture the knee/connection between the thigh and the lower leg to really get a feel for it.

dont use a "hair"/ stipple brush for the hair, unless you are using it limited. if you are just splattering it all the over the hair, it just comes off as a very linear brush stroke and doesnt say hair at all. use the same brush that you did for the rest of the painting.

PS: you will quickly notice that these books focus their subject in 1 specific subject, like harry borgman focuses on mixing media and "Expressive Sketching (Colored CG Tutorial Series), Character Texture presentation)" focuses on particles and strokes. READ The entire collection as a whole rather than thinking "oh I'll read this book and fuck guptill". No, that's a misguided asumption. My recommendation would be to read the Guptill guide to pen and ink and then use the books in this list to build on his techniques. You should try to be more mindful of measuring the angles of lines. There are a lot of tricky lines that you got wrong enough to mess up the rest of the image because they're at a deceiving angle in relation to what's around them. Slow down more, use your fingers or stylus to compare angles to something like hours/minutes on the face of a clock. Also a form like this lets you block out some 3d geometry for an easier time.

It just takes time man. Your gestures aren't too bad on the right there. I can see you're trying to learn the right stuff, you just aren't there yet. It just takes years of drawing everyday, the more you do it, the faster you get there. Fastest way to improve where you're at is to study better people's drawings, so get a bunch of different figure construction books and just copy out all the pictures. Do that on top of gestures, do a ton of quick sketch for heads and figures, do a ton of finished studies, study individual features like noses, eyes, study the planes of the face, etc. Just do a mountain of all that and more.

Don't worry about how good you are now, worry about how much effort you're putting in, and you'll get there.

Any guide for drawing grass ?

You can start with basic shapes and fill it in. Otherwise, just keep drawing. Art is a grind because you're trying to beat yourself into doing something the body isn't used to.

Also, I like how your drawing makes him look like a monkey.

1. FYI you are symbol drawing. Take a look at the picture at the ESSENTIALS section at the start of every Beginner thread.
2.Getting every detail is not the goal for quicker drawings. Its to help you get better by forcing you to condense what you see into a representation quickly, keeping only the most important parts.

You have a V-point right infront of your eyes.
Draw a straight line between the knees and see where the line is pointing to.

>tfw not even /beg/-tier and probably never will be

I hope you're all proud of the skill level you've achieved. I know you're probably a long way from where you want to be, but don't forget to appreciate the progress you've already earned.

Started reading Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing book today, how do these look? top are 1~2min, bottom is 3~4min.
Sorry for the horrible quality, had to change the levels in the image otherwise it was too hard to see the lines.

I don't know shit about painting, but I like it. Reminds me of Ross paintings. But christ my man, what is that lighting? Did you use the flash on a camera or just have a light pointing directly at it? Half of it is blocked out by glare.
