i think the red isn't so good. i know probably that's like the whole point but i think it kills the actual figures somewhat. so here is the same thing in a cool black. the painting as a whole probably isn't any more to your taste but perhaps you can see the figures become more prominent. apart from changing the background you could really go hard on the colors in the figures instead.

I definitely see what you mean, and your edit looks better.
I just wanted to have this strong background colour to give the piece some attitude.

Do you (or anyone) know about artists that work like that but where the subjects still keep their wight, so that I might figure out some solutions?

Yeah i realized that this morning. I got like mega tunnel vision. and ignored that 3 wheels were entirely compressed and one was sagging down to the ground. That and the right light is sagging.

FJs were meant to compete with jeeps so their suspension is pretty soft, but I dont think even a jeep would look like that.

I don't have all that stuff down 100% so I'm doing this in hopes that with direct comparisons to what I'm trying to achieve I'll be able to see and /ic/ will help me see the places I'm falling short so I can work on them.

Specifically chapters 8, 9, and 10 for your current work, I think it could help you out immensely. The top 3rd works well as you may realize, especially as a far background piece. Those chapters help you realize why it reads well, and how to differentiate for a different depth and environment in the bottom areas of the painting using saturation, contrast, and edges.

How do you paint wet into wet without muddying the color on your brush? Do you just clean it and pick up more paint for each stroke?

this paintings a bit more complicated than that

I used an absorbant ground first. It's cotton canvas with one layer of thin, sanded gesso. The medium for most of the painting is just paint thinner. I did one very thin layer of watery oil paint over a pencil drawing so it would absorb into the gesso. I made sure that the colors of the first layer were more mid-tones with nothing particularly dark.

Then once that dried in about 15 minutes (since most of the paint had soaked into the gesso) I did another layer on top of paint mixed with a small amount of linseed oil/turpentine (about 3 linseed for every 1 turp in the mixture). I did that layer more chromatic, but to keep the muted effect I added small amounts of white or yellow to the paint to dull the colors a bit.

If you want something that looks like my painting I'd recommend stretching your own canvas because pre-stretched canvases tend to be a bit plasticy, while cotton or linen you buy yourself can actually absorb paint when gessoed, and you can water down oils with as much solvent as you want, it'll just make the paint absorb faster.

>> No.3337076

>>3337061
also, this painting >>3336863

was done on pre-stretched canvas, and you can see how the solvent runs down the canvas in the first layer. As long as you know it's going to do that, and know how to make that look good, solvent running isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I do recommend linseed oil if you don't want the paint to run because that'll make it flow without literally making your paint a liquid. Only reason I didn't do that for the landscape painting is cause I didn't have any linseed oil left or I would've. It really makes your life easier with pre-stretched canvases.

The x-plane angle is not so large that the head is shortened: it should be wider. The forehead is receding out of line of the neck.

some of that comes down to the color palette I'm using. This is the style of painting best suited to the colors I use. I don't have black, I don't have a mid-range yellow, in fact most of the colors I use are on different sides of the spectrum from their primary color. Blue-greens, red-oranges, red-purples, etc. A more "realist" palette would mostly be mid-range reds, blues, and yellows with no dipping into a particular temperature.

first off: alternative style thread
second: looks like kirbopher, which is not a good thing.
the colors don't blend well together. It seems like you know the idea of color theory, but you still need to practice by studying illustrations, concept art etc. that uses pleasing colors- and study a variety of them. You can't just add a saturated color, and go to the opposite end of the color wheel and make it desaturated, it's more than that.

another thing you and kirbopher have in common is the forms look flat, which is caused by the flat line weight. Learn to add pressure/line weight into your drawings.

Overall your fundamentals are weak. Like you can have a good design but it's hard to tell if you don't have the art fundamentals down.

You should work from light to dark, start with the darkest value for each form, so your base color for the skull should be the dark brown found in the holes. I wouldn’t have wasted time drawing all the lines in the horns, they’re throwing off the form anyway. Be patient and when you start rendering make sure to take breaks and view your reference. Before you laid your base colors you should have corrected your linework. Personally I think overlaying to check is cheating but it’s one of the advantages of working digital, so if you have to, you have to. Just don’t trace which is full on cheating.

The ralistic smoothness in the nipples doesn't look (match) the type of body and the way you're coloring the body (At least to me).

The lines on the bottom pull the eye away from the center, it is distracting. Please don't just put random strokes in there, because you don't know what to do with the space; look how mike azevedo puts shapes in the background to help the composition.
While you look at his pics, study how he uses light. Your painting has a weak sense of lighting, the directions of the light is kinda there, but not fully realized in all the shapes (this is what gives things nice volume). Furthermore, you only use one light, which is something one should use with purpose. In most cases, go for two or three light sources.
Texture is highly dependant on edge control, so really THINK about the volume when painting the shadows (or light, whatever), so that your texture size, direction, etc. corresponds to the edge.

I think he was going for a quick grass texture but you’re right it doesn’t work. I think the big problem is the stroke and texture directions are conflicting which is what makes it so distracting. Grass blades do conflict in direction but lighting source should be consistent. The uniformity of the brush shape makes it look like the blades are all in the same direction but the light is conflicting.

How is your palette limited irl? I know you said "I don't have black, I don't have a mid-range yellow" in >>3338269 but why not? You paint a lot so I'm not sure if it's a monetary issue.

If it's not then I feel like you're setting aside the fundamentals in favor of style, and imo some of your pieces have had a lot of potential but they feel lacking.

I have 11 colors on my palette so it's not like I'm using that reduced a palette, but everything in traditional is limited by your materials. Say you have a red and a yellow paint. You can't mix EVERY orange with just those two colors, you are limited to what those two colors can mix. In digital you can mix any color you want. There's no real limitation to the colors you make, so painting with a "vermillion" in digital is just an approximation and it won't actually teach you how to use real vermillion paint.

You've got some nice smooth transitions on dem values and you're defining shape quite well but she does look like a puppet to me. Her forearm is much shorter than hen bicep btw.

Just a little workflow tip:

I think you should figure out the colors in the background first because the fill light and a lot of her skin tones are going to be determined by what's around her. You're probably going to get some really bland colors on her skin if you start working like you did here but it's kind of hard to say at this point.

Anyways. I think you might want to start from the beginning on this. It's not that it's terribly bad but I'm sure you'll just end up regretting the bland posing in the end. One thing you could do is taking her face and making it into a nice little portrait but moving forward with such a flawed base is always a little bit dangerous.

I say it because I've made the mistake of thinking about it that way. It's easier if you think about it as cylinder.
I think you are mixing the the neck and it's muscles with the traps,to which the neck is connected and what gives the notion(specially in certain poses) that the neck is curved. The curve at the bottom of the neck in the connection with the torso.
Buff dudes with really developed traps start looking like they have no necks at all(RIP rich piana).
You did a inwards curvature which is not that common and really depends on the angle.
Again ,this is how I think about it.
