What are your favorite artworks?
What pieces have really inspired you?

Pic related. I know it's cliche, but for me it's Klimt's portrait of a woman

There's nothing wrong with liking Klimt's works. His compositions were very good. The juxtapositions of textures and themes of the earthly/erotic with the transcendent were sublime.

morandi is my favorite, i'm not even sure why, i'm scared to read any critical response to him in case you're supposed to like him for completely different reasons than i do.

i used to quite like balthus, but when i saw one irl i was like actually disgusted. on the other hand morandi was perfect irl.

this is the balthus i saw, as you can see on the internet it's like fine.

Some dumbfuck on Tumblr misattributed the painting to Klimt, when it's by Anne Marie Zilberman. That post is big enough to the point her painting shows up in Google searches for Klimt and even on biographical sites.

While this isn't the only work that's really inspiring to me, a lot of them are sorta like this. Huge pieces that portray a sort of "larger than life" reality where none of the individuals portrayed can be said to have heroic proportions, thus implying there are no true heroes. I even kinda like where there's a sense that the piece could have been done better, that the artist, despite being very skillful and no doubt a master of the craft, wasn't quite up to the task of fully capturing the idea, not because of their ineptitude but because of just how grand what they were attempting was. I guess as I see it, the Idea of the art is what's really important, but that's no excuse to be lazy on craftsmanship.

Michelangelo's Sistine ceiling.

I have a book about it which shows better quality and everytime I look at his works I can't help but think of a man pursuing his destiny at the utmost rigor.

Then you don't really understand the autism in classical painting techniques. Compared to them, Caravaggio for example, Sargent was wild. Yeah, he wasn't as loose and crazy as later impressionists, -some even being his peers- but his brushwork alone shows immense life.

>Compared to them, Caravaggio for example, Sargent was wild.
are you kidding me? caravaggio has an incredible dramatic aura, even with his most stoic portraits.
i see sargent as someone who painted very meticulously and evenly throughout his paintings. he would not neglect one inch in them (except for his watercolors, which are more loose). i haven't seen a Sargent original in real life yet, so i do admit i don't have an optimal base for a judgement.

>> No.3337635

>>3337550
Brushwork and general attitude to a method. Sargent worked mostly alla prima, Caravaggio did not. That's all. Also, there is a connection between the two by way of Carolus-Duran, who loved Caravaggio. Sargent studied under Duran.

>>3337553
I wasn't talking about their imagry. I was strictly talking about brushwork and paint treatment. Sargrent did extensive studies to understand form, but allowed himself a certain freedom in execution. Caravaggio did extensive studies and then approached his painting with the same meticulous attention in how he applied his paint.

Check out this corner of a Sargent painting.
Where exactly does this look restrained?

>> No.3337962

>>3337893
If you view it as Venetian Mannerism, in the tradition of Titian and Tintoretto, you'll see that it is comparatively restrained! It's far less neurotic than most forms of Mannerism, because he wants to add a blend of American individualism. Personality-power. You see a lot of shot colours and musculature but the drama of the older Mannerism is gone. Courbet's another reference point.

>> No.3337983

this guy >>3337962 is not me from here >>3337506, but I agree. I'm sort of at a loss of proper words for it, but it's the way how evenly Sargent "finishes his works" that makes me think it is rather genteel, even a bit squeamish. again, these are strong words. I appreciate Sargent in a way, but these subtle impressions still remain. maybe he just wasn't as "wild" as his peers.

>> No.3338001

>>3337962
Why are you relating Sargent to Mannerism in any way? He was barely even tangential to that. Where's the connection? He is only tangential to Caravagio, by way of his teacher. So to compare Sargent to Titian is a bit of a stretch for me. And American individualism? Maybe, but hardly. Sargent was American almost entirely in name only. He spent the lion's share of his life in Europe, he was born and grew up in those countries.

>>3337983
>maybe he just wasn't as "wild" as his peers.
Exactly. Compared to some of his friends -early impressionists- he was tame, but compared to the classical and academic art world that he operated in he was a breath of fresh air. He loosened up even more with his watercolors, even though he maintained his drawing accuracy.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai

I was into classic traditional paintings and artwork from 1400s-1700s Europe. But after seeing the art of ukiyo-e and Japanese prints done from the 1800s, I've really been enamored with their way of using composition, light, and color. There's something about it that's mysterious that draws me in.

Ukiyo-e was also the very style that propelled the Impressionists as well as Vincent van Gogh. Especially at a time in history when the camera was taking over the art world and traditional painters had a direct competition and no longer created classsical-realistic artwork.

For the current anons on this board, the tradition of ukiyo-e also spawned the Japanese art of manga which developed into what we know today as anime.
