IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Depends how much you practice. It takes years to get really good at, but you'll still have to try if you want to get there, so it doesn't really matter anyway. Just do your best and you'll see improvements every so many months.

Some teachers recommend that you don't draw from imagination until you're good, but I think it's fine. Just don't neglect practice in favor of doodling or you'll get stuck in a rut.

For water spread your initial stroke from bottom to top to simulate sunlight penetrating the water. Those thick lines on top should not be so dark if light is coming from the sky. The toughs of waves should just be dabs of watered-down paint: highlights of turquoise (yellow?) and white. Reserve thick white strokes for crests.
Make your fish a different color than the water, draw it in perspective (top and port side visible), and make it larger. It could be better used by filling the space between the viewers and the feet, or the space between the mountains and the feet.
The rocks in the foreground aren't needed, but if you want to make them interesting you could add features such as corals and shellfish. You could also shade those rocks with a gradient starting dark at the bottom and lighter at the top. Apply dark strokes the bottom and wash them upward. The colors in the sky could be blended more.
Distort the feet. The distortion of objects reaching through the water is affected by the distance between the horizon and the meniscus of the body. Pic related.
Other: Wait for paint to dry before applying top layers of white. Instead of showing that the feet are underwater using the waves in the foreground, draw a flat dark meniscus. Fill the background landmasses with vegetation or crags. Make the tree in the background mean something. Add another tree on the right? Discolor the background with grey washes to simulate air particles.

You want to avoid having a line or too hard of a transition around the lips, it's a soft sort of transition in tone from the skin to the lips. Same with the nose, the lit side should have very soft tone. The dark side of the nose has that chunky core shadow, it should be a bit softer of a transition or it flattens it out.

Try to find breakdowns of how to do each feature, and do studies of those. You really want to focus on learning the 3D structure of each thing, and how you describe it with tone. Like eyes, lips nose, skull, hair, etc. Work on each individual thing along with doing whole portraits. Take a look at figure construction books people recommend like Hampton and Loomis. Bridgman is a little stylized but I like his stuff a lot. Look at the Asaro head too and try drawing that, you want to memorize those planes.

I find it's easier to learn how to render (shading) by doing still life too, cause people are so complicated to draw, so try putting some fruit under a lamp, or even something as simple as a kleenex box. Keep up the good work and keep having fun.

What steps do you take to learn how to "break down" an actual picture of a person? What I mean is, for example, If I were to look at a photo of a woman in some kind of pose, what would I do to learn the process that I would use to break down drawing her into parts, like figure out how I would draw the three boxes bridgman describes of the head, torso and pelvis that would make the posing of the actual person.

You're kind of going into detail already so it's a bit hard to do now, but maybe in future try to stick with larger brushes and economize your strokes. He's gotten a bit stringy now, but the forms still don't read quite as well as they could. Even when you get towards detail try to be a bit more painterly with your approach, and don't pick away at stuff with a hard little brush. Focus more on your large forms reading really well because that's always more important than any details.

Really take your time with pencil shading, it's something that just takes a a long time to work up properly. Make sure you've got a good range, from a low H to an 8B. Even then it can be hard to work up to a good dark. Don't get too strokey with it, just lightly build it up in layers with the side of the pencil, do one layer, go at with a different direction on the next to cover strokes.

Lightly draw the shapes of your shadows so everything is organized nicely before you start to render. Start with the core shadow, which is where it transitions. That's the darkest part and it generally gradates out from there. Look up pictures of a sphere where it shows you everything like the core shadow, the different mid tones, reflected light, specular light, all that shit.

Look up edges and study that. There are hard edges, soft edges, and inbetween. You can have something look good with all hard edges if you tile planes well, but go too soft and you get mud. Gotta learn where to put what kind of edge, how to balance them, etc. The number one thing is just patience. Just work on one drawing and really slowly try to build up a clean tile of a single value, or a gradation.

Fufu, it's nostalgic. An air of 2000s-decade teen weebs.
Your biggest issue is proportion- your forearms/hands are midget-sized compared to the rest. It's a common problem for people starting out, though.
You seem to draw what you've seen rather than understanding the process with intent. When you use a (hopefully good) reference, you shouldn't just look at it, but examine how each line and body part harmonizes.

Same guy. Tried to crap together something helpful but wound up feminizing it a bit much. The things to point out are:
>pupil size mildly uninviting
(inverse is girlishly inviting big ones on mine)
>lower/elongate the nose
(thin and long is more graceful, but wide can still be done)
>your facial features were on a tilt to be downward, but the head position wasn't contributing to the effect, making it off
>your ear's rather small. (mine could be considered too big though lol)
remember the idea that it starts right about where the corner of the eye is
>your head seems a bit chubby compared to shoulders, so thinned it out
(though by pinching the chin too much and defining the cheek, you end up with a girl like mine, whereas your girl's face is more reminiscent of a drag queen's)
>neck seems to be craning slightly inward than being a trunk from base
>the line under bottom lip can make a character more manly, you can probably see how the lack thereof contributes to girlishness

In anime-style, more white space is more beauty, while more defined lines in the face makes the character look leagues older.
Hope something of what I've said makes sense for you and helps lol

Good, but you should treat a value study less like a 3d model, and differentiate the tones, of the skin, hair, eyes, etc. more. Emphasize your darks more in the hair where the base value is darker then say, your skin.

It depends on what you are trying to do here. If you are trying for an attractive natural face, I'd say the nose is the biggest problem, you have these two straight parallel lines that don't look like any kind of human anatomy. The lips have a hard line tracing an area that would be a light pink transitioning smoothly to skin tone. You need to imply that line somehow rather than actually drawing it.

The eyes work well at conveying sadness. It's interesting that you wrote the word "devil" as the face conveys melancholy and sadness rather than evil.

The hair is good as a sketch, but if you intention is to clean this up and color it, you are going to end up wasting most of the effort you've done there.

Yeah, see all those fine art renaissance masterpieces?Just drawings; nothing special. Sorry, Michelangelo, but you didn't have enough style!

No but really, that's retarded. In magic mike's time a student who could closely mimic his master was prized. But his master was a forger, and so he made and they sold a fake statue to a duke-and eventually got caught. The master had to pay up twice its supposed worth for his crime, but the duke instead offered Mike a job for making a fake as convincing as his masters's. Or so the story goes.

Personal style is an absolute meme. Pick your favorite artist(s) and study the shit out of their style. You can modify it when you're as good as them.

Honestly not a bad start. If you're a noob then stay simple. You want to get that pencil familiar in your hand so draw lots of flowing and smooth lines. And copy. Look at cartoons and faces, eyes and mouths and ears and copy them a lot. You can't add facial details of you don't have any memorized, right?

But mostly copy what you like and do it a lot. It's all about time. "Mileage". That artist isn't better than you at drawing. They've just been doing it longer. And do try not to stress over it too much. That can kill your motivation.

So I just recently decided to seriously learn to draw.
I know sharing this doesn't give much to go off of, but I felt like sharing might help me start forming good habits.
I wrote down a list of problems I had with the sketch (which you can partially see cut off on the picture. My sketchbook is bigger than my scanner somewhat.)
A major issue I noticed when doing this was that besides just problems with the drawing itself like the perspective, proportions, etc was that I felt really impatient and rushed a lot when drawing it.
I joined an art class recently where we do a lot of drawing from life, and I noticed that I feel more patient in class than when I was doing this. I also couldn't draw as long overall.
Sorry for the blogpost guys, I just thought it might be nice to share.

As a novice artist I believe the general "drawing since they were a child" artist is unequipped to help beginners. I've asked so many people for advice and they all give the "lol just like DRAW" answer. I honestly think they say this because this is what they did when they were a child. They just drew and enjoyed their shitty stick figures and by the time they reached 18 they had become inherently good because they had been grinding for 15 years but don't know how to explain the process to an adult. "Just draw" is honestly the best advice you can give to a child. But an adult already knows this and needs more information on the basics. The sippy cup works for a child but holds back the adult, if you know what I'm saying.

Thanks. I believe my biggest problem is failing to draw every single thing in perspective. Needs more construction.

Medium-opacity watercolor style brushes and a grain filter. And a lot of technical skill.

Made a quick rough draft to help guide me to finishing an idea I had. I'm looking forward to finishing it to pinpoint my weaknesses, listed many so far, especially facial construction. Ignore that silk shading, I just wanted to see if I could manage getting the texture to be legible.

Do you have anything completed? This looks really nice so far.

I wonder if you're the type of guy to draw that shit
then save it on your pc just so you could burn the original to the ground

I think it looks alright, just gotta finish it

>> No.3343318

I am so fucking disheartened by drawing. No matter how many times I try to practice, nothing works. I cant improve.

I practice faces from photos but they come out like shit, I draw from references but nothing lines up.I've been trying to learn all my life with little to no success and I am on the verge of just giving up forever.

Can someone please provide a picture of their work and a description of exactly what they did to improve. I've watched tutorial after tutorial and nothing works. Please help me.

yo dawg, there is a new thread: >>3342807

idk what skill level ur at, so maybe I'm way worst than u.
but I think what helps alot with progress is general self improvement. for example going to the gym, nofap or even irl job.
idk why but being responsible seems to help alot of people with drawing.

also mileage. stuff like this helps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ufz75UvHs
