Its just the sketch but it feels a bit flat/skewed, especially if its from life. I think if you try to harden up some edges and really force the perspective of the base, it could turn out nicely!

Did this today and this is also my first post on /ic/. I don't have a scanner so forgive the bad quality. I never had any kind of training, but I've been drawing free hand and with references since I was 5. If I can I'd like to illustrate for a living but I know I have a ways to go. Any criticism to help me improve is welcome. If I'm wasting my time, tell me straight up. Thanks, Anons.

If you play around with your exposure/curve settings on your phone, you can still salvage a pretty bad phone camera.

Anyway, for the actual drawing, I find it hard to read. I'm not really sure what's going on. It sort of looks like a long-haired singer screaming into a mic or maybe it's someone holding a weird ass oar? There's a not a lot going on but all I can understand is that it's a figure. I think your values are decent, but the placement of them (aside from the gradient on the legs) aren't really helpful at all, since it's hard for me to differentiate stuff like their from the props or their clothing, or where their face even begins.

The fabric on the leftside shoulder with the lightning is pretty crisp and nice, though. And the movement of the hair is believable. It's just hard to read the drawing, though.

Also, if you're going into illustrating but look up to a photorealist, make sure to be able to balance imaginative drawing skills necessary for most of illustration, and the compositional and technical skills needed for executing good photorealism.

Thank you for this anon. I always thought that I could never tell what was going on in a lot of the things I draw, but no one I know ever really spoke up on that part. Pic related is another drawing of mine. I found the photo inside of a V magazine (at least I think it was). Now that I take a look at it again I can see where I went wrong in some places.

I use ink for most anything I draw, do you think using graphite and trying to fully outline everything before I really get into things would help?

>> No.3323755

>>3323740
This drawing is way more readable in spite of the confusing photo composition, but your values are way lacking here (not enough dark-darks, not enough shadows). It's also harder to get a sense of the bodies and clothing overlapping, so maybe emphasize occlusion shadows to show that they're layered. The fabric rippling on the boots is the best looking part, but the plaid fabric is sort of bringing it down since it feels less believable. Also the wrist on that hand is looking a bit chunky for what I would imagine is a model's.

I don't really think the medium matters (unless you want to be able to back and fix things with an eraser), so just go with whatever you're most comfortable with. As for the process, it depends what you want to go for. Photorealists seem more about the outline, but if you want to go into illustration, also learn to see the interior lines. Like the form, the weight of masses, placement of anatomy, etc., since construction's the fundamental skill for imaginative drawing.

You should try looking into photography, too, since it'll be beneficial for you to study composition and use your own photos if you want to do fine art level photorealism.

>> No.3323770

>>3323755
Wow, thanks again for the detailed critique anon. I realized the values on the second drawing weren't good, but at the time I drew it I didn't think much of it. I was just trying to get as much detail in as I could and I think making everything a bit lighter helped with that. If anything I'll go back and make the appropriate places darker.

Now that I really think about it, I lack the imagination for illustration. A good 90% of anything I've ever drawn have been from using photos as references. Some that I've copied verbatim and others where I pieced together different photos I took personally. I'll take your advice on looking into photography and fine art level photorealism. Thanks again for your response anon, it really does help a ton.

My god what are you doing on this thread girl? Anyway. Those big-hand dudes looks very cute and It's cool that you try new things, but in general it feels like you are not putting a lot of efford on them. I have the same feeling with your small comics that you sometimes post about feeling and stuff. Ok, the appeal of them relies on that childness, but you could do a lot better if you worked slightly bigger and took more time on each pannel. You don't seem to have a problem on doing that, it shows here>>3324620. Personally I prefer that, as viewer, but I guess you prefer to work that way when doing those comics in order to focus more on the text, which is fine, but take in mind that you could improve more if you worked more on them pannels.

Anyway, now that you are here and I trust your judgement, what do you think about my zombies?>>3324014

I know you didnt ask me about the zombies but the main thing id critique about them is that they do look quite stale and derivative, which isnt strange since thats the hardest thing to perfect in a style that relies on this brand of cartoony cleanliness.
I think it would be beneficial for you to experiment with elements of quirk and spontaneity that you refer to as "childness". Overall its looking like its on a good way though, maybe add in some whacky mid tones to spice it up!

And you can still apply what I said on the pharagraph. You have a neat style, but sometimes you break it too much and loses some consistency.

Sorry for the late reply, since I went to go fuck off.

I don't think anyone really truly lacks an imagination to do more non-referenced pieces, but it's more that you specifically have focused on a different skillset than construction/designing that illustration entails. I hope you don't intend to drop the idea of illustration all together, since there's illustrators who utilize their own photographic references immensely and it might help to understand what's going on in a photograph beyond the 2D shapes, if that makes sense.

the lavender color and red triangle are super distracting, it might be helpful to limit your palette a bit in that regard. It's difficult to discern what all the subjects of this still life are. I can tell there's a bottle and a pot and some fruit but what is the scaly looking thing and the coral-colored thing to the left of the blue pot? Maybe defining those objects more would help a viewer read this painting better. The deep navy blues you use for shadow are nice especially in contrast to those oranges and yellows.

I've had that problem as well.

I call it the "head-titlted-back effect".

Try and add the underside of the chin and then add a cast shadow and see if that helps.

The reason why the head looks wrong is because the torso is leaning back while the head is still looking straight on, it doesn't look natural.

What's your aim with this? If it's observational study you need to take a step back. If it's trying to create a cool stylized piece, then deviate a little from the reference.

The linework is quite messy, the weight is all over the place.

Look at pic related - it's just some random french artist I follow - the lines are loose and therefore the poses look natural. Your drawing is very stiff.

Good luck.

I think everything in a creature must work towards what you want

A threatening beast need to make you want to run away from it, not want you to hug it

So I guess I shouldv'e made him with more spikes, and make them less gentle, make him skinnier but also a lot sharper, maybe remove his pupils, his gut looks too tender, and so does his fatness, I guess you can't simply do everything anyway you want and expect the result to have the impact you wanted, thanks.

I was just trying to make a stylized piece to practice putting down screentones, I try to deviate from refs by drawing a character instead of the subject. Next time I'll try changing the camera angle or something similar if you think I need to deviate more.
As far as line quality goes, I think it's cause I work on vector layers with brushes that have average stabilization. I also get a bit stiff when I'm trying to get angles correct so I'll look out for that in the future.

I started with a rough sketch and kept changing it from there. I couldn't find a reference that had the position I wanted so I had to get reference from different images of the actor. I was very thrown off by different make-up, lighting, and expressions he used, not to mention his hair usually covered half his face. Sometimes I'd look at the drawing and it felt really close but when I changed one thing the rest collapsed. I stared at this drawing and the actor for so long I don't think I can objectively pinpoint what's wrong.

if his face is giving you problems, maybe look at some other winter soldier fanart people have done. a lot of the time it's easier to see what characterizes a face when you look at what other people have noticed drawing it. you could hypothetically caricature an owl by exaggerating the beak, but that's not why you recognize an owl so no one does.

although if i was going to say what's wrong, it's not got a lot of storytelling to it. it's like a pose to show off a design instead of one in the context of a story. which is fine if that's what you're going for

the shadows are too localized, like each part of the figure has its own lighting. Use lighting that takes into account the whole figure , use shadows to establish hierarchies within the figure and move the eye, everything has the same constrast weight

The focal points are not emphasized or complimented

the legs are too stiff, the weight being so equally distributed means the figure looks non dynamic and the negative space between the legs bothers me some, have a major emphasis on the inactive vs active, exagerate mor.

i suppose theres going to be something to the left of the canvas? both her hands and eyes pointing to outside the composition bothers me, it has an incredibly akward visual flow.

use rule of thirds at least, her crotch is death center on the page, that kills an image, makes it inmobile and flat.

flip the background vertically, use color on the upper area where actual features are rather than the floor

I'm sure you've figured out a bunch of stuff while painting it. Make another and compare them both.

It does look pretty weird tho when some areas have soft transitions while others doesn't. Try and stay consistent with your style. Either keep track of hard and soft transitions over the entire piece, or only do hard transitions. Don't do both.

yeah patience is kingly especially with oils, but they're really forgiving. I think you might want to go a bit lighter with the amount of paint you're putting on, but some oil painters do start out pretty heavy. your sketch shows some good understanding of shapes and value, I think when bringing color in, you lost some of value gets a bit confused, especially in the warm greens you're putting down. They're supposed to be shade but are a bit too close in value to the highlights and the saturated green. I think the piece is still salvageable, in thumbnail it's not as glaring.

You obviously know your stuff and are pretty good on a technical level. What really sucks is your imagination. I've seen this piece dozens of times on artstation, and most of the time it was done better. It's your staple armed horsemen, giant palace #9000 and the same grassland with
rocks everything seems to take place in. Some worldbuilding things im having a problem with here: What do the villagers do and eat? There are no farms and pastures around, and besides working in the palace it doesn't look like there are many jobs available. Why is there deciduous tree in the foreground? All other trees are conifers, which tells me that the climate is wet and harsh, or maybe we're at an high altitude. Please think about what you paint and why you paint it. Show some creativity, something that hasn't been done a hundred times before. How does this castle look from the main sqare in the village? How does a quarry look in this world? Where does a sheperd live? Are there magical things and places? How do they look?

Also what's the deal with fantasy settings and blue rooftops? I've seen it so often now, and I don't get it. Just because it's the one colour of roofing that isn't done in the real world? Is verdigris too boring?

He's right. And it's why 90% of concept art is boring, recylced trash.

Tradfag going digital for the very first time here. Got a Wacom Draw yesterday, and just fiddled about a little bit with circles and shit, to understand basics of how it worked, then tried my hand at this. I know it's rough af, but I wanted to post just to see if I'm doing something essentially wrong in the use of the tool. I purposedly didn't fiddle with settings, just fired up Krita and drew this with default brush, to feel the movement and dynamics.
Any tips, exercises I should do or reading/video material on the transition from traditional to tablet would be most welcome.

I'm hardly the best person for tips regarding the traditional > digital transition. I had serious issues with it for the longest time and completely dropped digital for a couple of years, and then picked up the tablet on a whim and for some reason everything just worked out.

But some stuff:
Don't use ctrl-z. Don't use liquify. Don't use the lasso tool for moving wrongly placed stuff around.
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it. But it's like with an eraser when working traditional. You don't want to rely on it. So if you fuck up, paint over it or around it.

If you also work traditional, try to be even stricter than usual regarding how you put down lines. You really want the approach of "think before you draw" to be second nature, just because it's so easy to deviate from when working digital.

And last, do a bunch of timed gestures with the tablet. But with very short poses. Mix up 1min and 30s. Because you want to draw a shitload where you don't have time to think too much. Reconnect all those brain connections, and whatever.

Thanks a lot, anon. Those do help. Working around or repairing stuff instead of just getting rid of them when they go wrong does hit home hard, as I was always very strict with this when working with a pencil. I don't even have a proper eraser on top of the table when I draw, just a kneaded one to soften up some demarcations, and I don't even do that a lot. Also, doing fast-paced gestures was the next thing I was planning to do anyways. So I guess I'm on a right track after all. That's reassuring.

Second Character concept I been designing for 3D.

Putting more thought into my character design. Was trying to apply Mythophic character traits and colour theory along with my original concept.

A skinny, scantly clad, anthropomorphic female because I accepted my degeneracy. I liked Sticks, Wendy and Etna designs but being a little paranoid, the proportions and clothing it may lead to awkward questions about design choices. I find that a devolved chin and flare hips makes all the difference. It would also be a bitch to animate with short arms and legs.

Triangles pointing up and down for only having 2 main traits. Ambush and Explosions. Hence the ninja/Eastern clothing. Also I like that designs that come out of japan for fantasy ninjas. Not Naruto wizards... I mean "ninjas".

For personality, I'm thinking dual personality were its apathetic to unhinged depending if she is setting off explosions.

Want to go with bright colours for the fireworks to show danger with here being earth tone for contrast and to function as camo.

Am I doing anything right?
