>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.

Art school is mostly for building connections and having someone do the disciplining for you. Unless you're absolutely clueless with what your art goals are, you should be fine for the most part since you're not planning on using art as an income.

i mean, art school is a tool like any other. you'll learn a certain amount of discipline, build a network of artists, and be exposed to lots of things you wouldn't be otherwise, but you can do art without school, you just to have to be more aggressive with how proactive you are i think.

If you don't want to make a living out of it you'll most likely be able to take more than enough art courses in a science program. Most schools will still require you to do humanities electives if you do engineering or science; my school was starting to develop their art program into something more competitive and had a strong architecture one so I got to take two pretty good drawing courses mainly dealing with observation/life drawing and composition. We also had a figure drawing/anatomy course that I wish I had taken but I didn't get interested in it until senior year.

speaking as someone who just finished his first comic issue a few months ago, and spent years trying to prepare for it, this is what I tell people when they ask how to get good enough to make a comic: only making a comic can prepare you for making a comic. Sure, there's a lot that can be learned about panel layouts, facial expressions, storytelling, coloring, linework, etc etc but the thing that will make you good at comics the fastest is just sitting down, thumbnailing out a few pages worth and starting the dang comic. Comics are often just a vehicle for a visual story crafted by an individual, so what you have to say and how you say it is more important than looking like the best comics out there. just my two cents, good luck!

The only book I've really tried is Zarins' Anatomy for Sculptors (still have so much to learn from it). Other than that I take inspiration from doujinshi artists. Most importantly, I draw a lot of figures and often try to go for tricky poses because it forces you to think.

What do you want to learn?

Write out specifically what you want to learn. Then break down what you need to learn to be able to do each one of those. You'll want to learn perspective, figure drawing from all sorts of angles and poses, anatomy, character design, environment design, composition, storytelling. I've not done it but everyone I've talked to about it has said you can't learn how to make a comic until you start making one. So plan something and start tackling it. As you realize your weaknesses you'll find out what you need to learn. Two books I can think to recommend are The Skillful Huntsman and Framed Ink.

As you have it drawn, she's about 5+1/2 heads, which is pretty damn shrimpy for a (presumably) adult woman. The neck attachment is a far more glaring issue, though. Her head should be lower and farther forward from this slightly top-down perspective. Even if her proportions were right, it would still look wonky due to that; oftentimes what seem like body-proportion issues are actually perspective ones.

You need a much stronger base in fundamentals, particularly anatomy, perspective, and gesture. There are many other issues I could have mentioned above, but the simple fact here is - and I say this in the most encouraging and non-crablike manner I can - fixing them would be a waste of energy. Your issues do not stem from a misapplication of knowledge, they stem from a lack of knowledge. Until you learn how to construct a figure from shape primitives in proper perspective, you will continue making novel mistakes one after another and trying to band-aid over them after the fact.

It's like the other anon said, there's too much equal line weight.
Pick some areas and drop some darker/thicker lines. Usually wear two lines intersect, or a shape is moving away from you. Like for me the most appealing part is the bottom guy's eyes because they just have a different line quality. In order to achieve that in the rest of the drawing, it would be easiest to pick some areas and start varying some of those single thickness lines.

How can I fix this way of thinking?

I'd need to see some of your life-drawing work to compare. But, and I'm not necessarily accusing you in particular of this, I will remark that life-drawing alone cannot suffice without also studying constructive anatomy methods from a qualified teacher.

>Also maybe should have mentioned this before but it's supposed to be a DR character sheet. Wasn't that worried about the pose and shit because it's supposed to be them just standing there.

It looks a bit like you started with some very basic overall shapes and then just added anatomy piecemeal from there, rather than using a strong line of action to figure out what the hips, spine, and ribcage are doing and working from there. A person's pose always has purpose, even if that purpose is just "standing here and not falling over". Even though she's supposed to be standing straight, her knees look like they're meant to be bent and her shoulder are leaning forward, as if crouched. Because of this odd, confusing posture, her arm appears to be jutting out stiffly rather than hanging confidently to her side as in the character sheet you posted. See how, in the rear view drawing on the right, you can see her arms are farther toward the viewer than her torso? That's because she has her spine upright and her shoulders back, which is a nice confident standing posture.

Not him but I don't think so. That drawing has very incorrect muscles all throughout it. The ribcage as they already mentioned is wrong, mainly because the serratus muscle that attaches between each rib makes big humps closer to the back and the ribs form those smaller rows leading down to the abs. In the drawing it's the opposite, with the bigger forms are attached to the abs while the smaller ones are leading towards the back. The arm muscles aren't wrapped correctly, particularly the flexor muscles on the forearm and the brachioradialus is attached behind the tricep instead of between it and the bicep. In the neck the sternocleomastoid is drawn as if it's part of the trapezius. There are a lot of problems in it but they could be pretty easily worked out with some reference and in the long term some anatomy drills.

Death (top left) could use some work in terms of colors on the character, it looks a bit too muddy. And the Hanged man (top right) back ground textures need some more gradation using paint brushes to blend.

Death looks like a child (due to the face proportions)

I think your major problem is the composition anon.

First, there is empty space that is not adding anything to the whole image, this could work if it all was in one point perspective since the eye naturally will guide us to the subject. But there is no perspective guiding us to anywhere, this is not bad. But if you are going to use this kind of view is better if you just center the elements, so all the focal elements (the main subjects) are centered.

Second is shape.

You are using shapes to guide eyes somewhere, the center of the image in this case. The problem is that there is nothing there, so once we look at there, there is nothing to look at, we get confused as we don't know what is the purpose of the image or what is going on in there. Add something of interest so i can have a context. If you already had these two things in mind then i guess you know what i'm talking about. If you haven't i reccomend this video about composition:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8i7OKbWmRM&t=80s

Third is connect the eyes of both of them, the girl is looking at him so it looks natural, but his eyes are looking somewhere so it's also confusing in that way.

I see you had the perspectives correctly at first and then you change them. Remember that the girl is closer to the camera and standing, meawhile the man is sitting and further from us. So there is no way their feet can be at the same level.

Last but i thing this is one of the most important is weight. And maybe this is what you are refering to. Make them look real, and that meas not standing still. Look a G Washington from Assassins Creed and you can see how they convey emotion only with pose.

That's it, i think you have good skills but you just need to work a bit more your composition, so keep working on it anon!

I think I liked it better when you matched the head direction with the body. It enhanced the structural integrity more.

Making the head angled differently than the body can make the piece more dynamic, but right now the direction is just slightly and ambiguously tilted. It makes it read a lot less clearly and makes me question if it's a perspective error or a tilted head.

It doesn't help much with the gesture of the overall pose either

tl;dr if you want to make a tilted head, make sure you do everything you can to make it read clearly and never let the audience have a moment of ambiguity or doubt about it

Hope this makes sense, kinda turned into a weird rant

I didn't really do anything special to get where i am right now, just looked at stuff i liked and tried to approach it analytically-- how did they achieve a certain effect, what are the various ways i can use my tools to emulate the same effect, what ideas/concepts are they using that i can steal and apply to my own stuff?

You know, just the usual. Also i don't think my lineart is particularly good. I struggle a lot with clothes since I don't practice enough-- I have some real trouble transferring gesture flows into clothing flows. My inexperience shows a lot.

Fix the Perspective of the facial plane of the bottom two characters. You somehow got the top one perfect but the bottom characters look like their facial features are floating above their face or like they're not on the face at all, I suspect it's cause you had their side planes covered so you had a harder time accounting for it.

Also personal gripe but I don't really like the freaky long alien fingers the bottom character has going on.,
