IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The reason why it is bad is because the values aren't being pushed out enough. It's unclear how much shadow a given part of the body is in.

In this picture, you kind of fixed it, but it is still kind of unclear where the light-source is at. And even with the new tones added, it still feels flat because you are only defining the major forms with it. You could be using the red light from the eyes to cast light onto surfaces other than the eye socket to further define forms. Also, the nose socket is very flat looking, because the shading is too subtle.

TL;DR: Push out your values.

I'm trying to draw this character form the game Krosmaga. Drawing her as a exercise and continue to improve is my goal.

I'm the first to see the problems, knowing that something is wrong and try my best to fix it resulting in a little less of a mess.

That of course does not discourage me.

Before I added those shades, I was going for stippling-only, and on the scale I'm working at it's becoming more difficult to occlude each point further together before I find a better pen for the job. Pic related, I'm going for that style in terms of shading.

Can I theoretically do what you're saying I should do in PT Sai? I'm currently layering over gray masks in PDN currently and that's non-intuitive as hell obv.

I'm only defining the major forms because this is for a largely weeb JRPG. If it becomes too detailed it won't match the other artist's style, which is largely what I'm apeing here.

The nose I can fix tomorrow, adjusting the luminosity on one side of it should do the trick. Thanks.

I'm concerned I'm not focusing on the right things. Could anyone chime in and tell me if my current focus isn't helpful?

I'm learning figure drawing. I've a good enough grasp of basic perspective and structure after studying basic shapes and boxes for like 2 months so I figured the next step was learning how to draw people.
I studied gesture for a moment and kept going through the Proko figure drawing lessons along with Hampton's for back up (I find his method more technical and less /beg/ friendly)

But then Proko goes full "Draw the whole fucking owl" in between landmarks of the body and fullblown mannequization. It's daunting. I turned to his specific anatomy courses for the 3 main masses of the body - hips, torso and head- and I'm getting decent at drawing them but I can't seem to piece them together.

It's like I know how to draw the puzzle pieces but not how to piece them together? Like how to draw the spine, torso, head and hips altogether without it looking weird and making them click.
I know I'm rambling but it's due to how confused I am at what I should be doing at this point. I hope someone can figure out what I'm doing wrong and help a brother out by pointing out.

Anon, if you haven't tried at all how to draw in the decade or so since you've been 6 and are hurt by a random person's comment, your mental blocks are probably more inhibiting to drawing than your financial situation.

Are you near any community colleges? I'm currently at one and my professors are amazing, and they're very accommodating to students' lack of access to materials. If you can't get financial aid or you still feel like it's too expensive, just go straight to paper, pen, and printer paper. Then you can save up 20 bucks, buy a pad of newsprint and some compressed charcoal so you can experiment with a medium that blends drawing and painting.

Beg-tier here so take advice with a grain of salt.
Eye's need to be darkened as they won't be paper white. it also might be the reason they look kind of flat. Might just be me but the ear looks huge (bottom of the ear goes below the bottom of the nose), although it is possible this guy just has giant ears.
Overall, the values are off as Im sure the guy's forehead isnt the same white as the guy's white collar.

You made a really obvious mistake which is easy to correct. You kept the same proportions for the fingers as if you were looking the hand from the front. The pinky isn't as long as the index, so the effect will never be the same if mirrored. Follow >>3324088 and keep practicing.

On a side note, your facial features really clash with how you draw the body in my opinion. The lips look flat and weird, the cat ears look weird in profile and I think you could make it look really interesting if you went for a less simplified anime style. Just my opinion.

How do I get better with drawing eyes, I feel like my shape is unrealistic. All I can ever find as references is those beauty all puffed up with makeup kind of eyes

Left drawing's monobrow is overlapping the eye. Left drawing's right ass cheek should wrap around the hamstring, not into. humerus and forearm are too short. define the left ass cheek more, it looks like an upside down cone. She looks pregnant with sagging breasts.

Right drawing, forearm and humerus is short. i dont know where her left arm is. neck doesnt match torso. Move entire head slightly to the right.

Studying figure drawing, thought I was getting better at gesture but I think I was just getting lucky or something. I'm still a bit confused about what the marks I make are supposed to indicate. I usually start by trying to capture the movement of the spine, limbs, and head but I'm not sure what to do after that because I'm left with some stick figure looking thing and the next marks I want to make are contours or defining some rough outline of the pelvis and ribcage. I get pretty confused because everybody says not to draw contours but in every gesture drawing I see half the marks look like rough contours.

This is why people hate /ic/ his drawing is not a ball nor a cube, yes you could argue all principles apply when reducing a drawing in to shapes but turns out there is much more variables to consider, which can only be confirmed or denied with proof ( 3d model or photo) everybody fucking knows that shadows are opposite to the light source! blending them is just question of ability, the problem is that everyone sees a different thing in their minds, a different position, intensity or number of light sources.

Stop refining sketches, keep a sketch rough and refine while inking. Too refined sketches only work as sketches and trying to ink them will just not hit the same notes the refined sketch did.

Overall, I think your biggest flaw so far is not spending enough time noticing how the different shapes of her face relate to each other. Which you should always be doing all the time throughout the piece.

For example:
Her shoulders aren't so low. (sure the right is higher than the left, but not to that extreme)
Her lips aren't as droopy.
Her ear is more of a boxy oval than it is pointed.
Eyebrows should be sharper.
Don't draw individual strands of hair like that, try for a smoother, darker, even distribution of shading on her scalp. all the texture is in her braids and her baby hairs, not the pulled back section.

I feel like you've gotten the left side of her face down pretty well, but you lost a lot of the likeness on the right side of the face. and don't be discouraged by that, everyone does it when they begin.

I also think you need to spend more time using smoother transitional shades overall, like its obvious where you pressed harder on the paper to achieve dark shadows, but its much more visually appealing to shade by layering up cross hatching. thats why your graphite is so shiny. you're just destroying your work, you can't completely erase that like you would if you had lightly layered it.

Learning how to accept that you need to start over completely is something you should learn how to embrace early. It'll save you from fidgeting on your work and it keeps your work looking cleaner. Its not what a lot of people want to hear, but you're saving yourself in the long run; just take breaks, stretch. recognize when you're being tense otherwise you will press harder on your pencil and make darker deeper ugly grooves.

sorry for typos

Shading is hard, but it's oddly meditative. I think the proportions were a bit worse this time, but I was more than a little inebriated when I drew it.

Hands/Heads still scare me, but I made an attempt at feet this time and at least an outline of the head.

I think I'll keep up with the 1 post/day stuff. It's been pretty good motivation so far. Adding the reference this time for better comparison.

There's some weird anatomy stuff going on. There's that weird angular ridge at the waist, the proportions on the feet are weird, the spot where the thigh meets the groin is really awkward and makes it look like the pelvis is way too small. The ends of the collar bones should be a lot closer together especially when viewed at an angle.

The toes and hands look pretty good though.

One thing aside from anatomy stuff is the pose. It's incredibly awkward to squat like that and keep your back straight up. She should be leaning much more forward if it's supposed to look like a normal squat.

I'm following exercises in Keys to Drawing, and the purpose is more for drawing what you see and proportions. The shading is just for fun really, but your 100% right. I should really give the head/hands an attempt, if only for the practice. I'll give it a shot in the next one I post today.

>> No.3326754

Honestly anon - forget the shading.

For now just focus on proportions. Look at the reference - how big is her head in relation to her body? If you took a measurement from the top (left side in the ref) of her skull to her chin and extended that length again where would it intersect on her body? Where does it intersect on your drawing? What are bigger - her hands or her feet? How thick are her thighs in relation to her lower legs? How thick is her upper torso in comparison to either of those?

You need to be constantly asking youself these questions as you draw. You want to avoid being on autopilot. So for now, set a goal with each study like this to get the proportions down as accurately as you can. Try not to cheat unless you're really stuck - just use your eyes. Start by making big comparisons (e.g. top half vs. bottom half, how many heads tall) and once you're confident with those you can start moving into smaller and smaller areas and finer details.

Once you get a handle on that - your eyes will be a lot sharper and you'll be in a better spot to start looking at stuff like gesture, anatomy and rendering.

now color pick and compare it yours. find what you tend to do
i can aklready tell you seem to pick both lighter and desaturated values than the ref.
Try doing b&w studies so you can focus one thing at a time.

the ear seems a bit high and we should be able to see the other one too. maybe try incorporating eyes coming out of it? as well as skin folding around the eyes with veins and whatnot
>>3327247
not bad! try to simplify it into simple forms and maybe practice pairs of hands doing stuff.
>>3327081
try to have a solid drawing first, as well as value comps so you can design the light and shadow pattern in order to guide the viewer to whatever focal point you choose.

The color and the blending is good anon, so about that i thing you did good.

However, I think you should work a bit on the drawing part and getting the proportions right. I see that you know what you are doing but maybe you don't have a method.

Try breaking the figure into simple shapes or making a blind contour of the figure so that way you can see if your drawing matches the original subject. If the shapes or the contour are alike, you're good to go.

If you want more info about this, the first section of Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson explains it very well.

Again anon, you are getting the colors right but if you don't get proportions right it will make it lack realism inevitably. So I suggest work on it.

Good luck anon!

Any tips on this? I want to make it look like she is extending the arm from above the viewer, but i'm having trouble with the hair perspective. Not quite sure how does it work from that angle.

Also any tips on how to work without making the pages look so dirty? Always that i scan them they look dirty as hell.

How can I improve this face structure? I must have redrawn this chin line 100 times and I can't tell if it's right anymore.

Wait til you get to the perspective section and suddenly you're reading a technical manual. Then you'll wish for more words.

If you mean to draw the outer shape of the head before the facial details, I did. But then after I drew the details I realized I was unhappy with the head outline so I kept redrawing it, which means I was back to inside out.

So what I really need is to train my eye to tell exactly what is wrong, in order to prevent those later-phase issues, but I don't have the experience for that yet. I thought asking might help in this case.

How the fuck do I stop drawing shitty anime and actually learn how to draw? I follow my books, go to figure drawing sessions weekly, but somehow the only thing that ever gets better is my line quality. I don't WANT my art to look like sophomore tumblr bullshit, but I genuinely can't figure out how to get there.

power just went out at my house for a split second before I could save my progress on my image in Clip Studio Pro. Now all my lines are jagged and I don't know how to fix it. The pen writes jagged even though anti aliasing is all the way on, and when I turn it all the way off. Visually no difference. How do I fix it? Also is there a way to fix it with my current lines, without having to trace them again?

What are some good drills I can practice? It seems like I have a huge amount of trouble with construction. I just cant seem to grasp the idea of putting complex 3d shapes on top of each other. Like a rib cage followed by breasts.

Im studying everything but these guides never give any homework or drills, can you guys help me out?
