I kind of think I'm danger close to over-layering this one, or already have. Already did a layer of black, then blue, then red, then I was drunk and used some extra greens and over smudged and the face keeps not getting better.

20x24. Somethings fucky with her eyebrows, and somethings missing from the eyes that stresses the anxiety she looks like she has in the og pic. Stone's face is so goddamn white.

overdid it with the blacks and grays for the base layer, then did it black and white with a blue shirt, then started trying to add color in. Needs a bunch of detailing and shit probably.

Needs more highlights, details around eyes and mouth, and some other shit probably. What should I do with background?

example of first layer with black paint. Not really advisable but I do it because I hate future me and like making that guy's life miserable.

I kind of wanted to just do most of the canvas with opaque black except for the important shit. Highlights from his uniform, his badge and key highlights and junk. Then just the hands and faces and are prominent.

Haven't decided if I want to do everything but the hat as black and white or not.

kind of a useless critique tbphwyf. Every painting is it's own trial and error where I experiment with layering and brush technique and blending and how best to misuse acrylic. For every relevant or ebin schlock I do there are dozens of paintings that were only done because they seemed challenging. Plus I'm going into doing more 20x24s and larger etc. Everything I do when I'm not blacked out is part of the process of improving.

Always open to suggestions for less-ebin source material though.

I do something different on literally every painting.

I mean I was able to do near-photorealistic chalk pastel portraits freehand when I was 15, 15-years ago. Part of the fun I have with this series is that I have some process rules in place so that I can goof around and subvert them later. Without structure and process it's more difficult to stay productive.

I don't. The part of the process that is "the exact process of every single one of these" is that they're graphite transferred to give the uncanny valley effect, and they are worked on in batches. I have dozens of canvasses prepped when I'm painting and jump around as needed based on which color I have mixed.

My issue with /ic/ is that this has always been the meme critique. But what does that really even mean? Everything is a learning experience. Not to mention that by working in clusters and jumping around, I often end up channeling frustration about something I don't like on one painting by shifting gears and doing something I do like on another.

I think that you should use less (less and not “no more”) gray to shade skin, and rely on cold colors to deliver shading. I like the work, but what is the concept? Preserving reaction faces in physical form? If so, wouldn’t mediums that are better at rendering (oil and acrylic paint) make more sense?

What are you seeking, exactly? All of your paintings feel rushed and unfinished, but, as I understand, that's intentional? If that's so, I would recommend changing your gimmick. Doing things fast is only impressive if you're some kind of genius who is particularly good at doing things fast. If you're not, you should just stick to your limitations and take your time to finish your works. Your work will drastically improve if you just take things slowly. Quality over quantity.

idk. One must imagine Sisyphus smiling. More practically they're all kind of part of a larger project called How To Paint Trump, where I filmed some of an introduction to a how to video on painting Trump's hair back in January 2017. Everything since the Cabin America painting has been part of a narrative of anxious, avoidant, manic distraction from finishing the project and finishing the original painting. None of the paintings are really supposed to be finished, and the implicit goal has always been made that they're props to potentially comedically destroy as part of larger productions. The idea in the beginning was that I would shoot an episode for each one where I talk about the ideas behind it, then do a mock tutorial on how to finish it, where it would probably end up getting destroyed or made worse.

Yeah the point definitely isn't supposed to be that I'm a genius, it's that any fucking idiot can make an okay-looking painting that someone may like, if they just do it. Yeah it is partially connected to a mock-apocalyptic world-view where the digital era was a mistake and the internet is probably going to destroy the world, and everything digital will be lost within one generation. So part of the bit is that it's converting digital memes into analog canvas panel or whatever.

But more practically I think it's kind of just funny and subversive without being overly edgy or confrontational. Absurdism is neat.

Yeah but the preservation thing is more of just a talking point than an actual concern. I started doing Acrylic portraits because Acrylic is the kids paint, and Acrylic is the worst paint for the job. Which is funny to me. Plus there aren't many notable Acrylic portrait artists are there? I'm cornering the market yall.

But yeah oil would totally "make more sense" and "not look like shit" but that's not what I'm all about you dig.

Don't do this. The watercolour will pool in the texture of the acrylic paint, making it hard to control. The watercolour will not adhere well to the acrylic and will probably wipe or flake off. Watercolour is soluble when dry so if it gets wet it will come off. Watercolour is transparent so you won't be able to make anything lighter with it, only darker, and it will be hard to predict the effect of the other colour beneath coming through. So many reasons.

The way to go is watercolour first, then acrylic.

Yeah I've tried that a few times before. My beef with that is that at that point I might as well just misuse Acrylics as watercolors for the base layers.

But yeah I was reading somewhere a few techniques where you can try and use darker watercolors on lighter acrylic skin tones for interesting effect that doesn't ruin it. At the very least it could be a fun experiment to ruin one of the paintings.

I think this kind of work only has potential if it is almost photorealistic. There was this guy some time ago who was doing something similar. He painted popular stuff and memes and then made collages out of it so you could hardly tell whether he used photos or paintings. Found the ideas pretty lame but it still looked alright because He copied everything very good. You should try and get more accurate with the paintings.

And I disagree about the "little attention to quality" thing. I focus most of my efforts on the ones that I like, and most of them are just ones that were suggested on 4chan that I work on when I have extra paint or am frustrated with something. I've thought about doing one where I try and go hard in the paint with the photorealism. My beefs are that I don't think I would be able to do it with Acrylic without going huge, and then it's just a time and focus thing that I probably don't have the capacity for. And I used to do photorealistic stuff with chalk pastel in school.

Basically all of them are entirely Acrylic on canvas panel. Some have some water color mixed in.

The overwhelming majority where done by editing and blocking in photoshop, printing onto a piece of legal paper, then graphite transfer onto canvas.

The first 6 were done by printing out the pictures, and then removing one color at a time with an exact-o knife, then tracing the cuts onto the canvas to mark where each color went. Was a real hassle.

I work in batches. I have dozens of canvasses being worked on at a time. When I mix a color for one canvas, I'll then keep applying it to the other canvasses as needed after the first one is done until I'm out of that color. A lot of the reason why it seems like many of them are unfinished is that they were coat-tailing in the rotation with the paintings I was more focused on, eventually shifted out of the rotation, and I just got used to them looking unfinished until I wasn't motivated to fuck with them anymore. Also it's kind of something that I'm spending over 40 hours a week working on when I'm not on a production or whatever. I've been treating it like a business, which it legally is, and I'm an employee, which I legally am, starting on January 1.

None. They're all treated as incomplete. They're all stacked against each other with no protection in bins. It's fun to feel your way through someone elses art and see where your techniques differ and notice the little mistakes that everyone makes which usually end up defining our styles. You feel closer to the person and it adds a layer of depth to your appreciation. When you realize someone didn't actually draw any of it, and probably mostly pulled all of the layers and colors directly from the photo, it moves from creation into fabrication, and something is lost.

This is one that I've repeatedly had fun ruining paintings with when I was already frustrated. I know very well why not to use black on these, and it's kind of my nuclear button. To me there's a level of spiteful russian roulette when it gets used in late game. For a lot of them I treat a final black layer like it's the finishing touch, where like I officially ruin the painting beyond recovery and can move on, knowing it is dead. Still good though. You've got a really good eye, it's just clear you've never sat down and done a study of a master painting or someone you really admire, or you'd understand a little better how to create the effects you enjoy.

Remember, art is just a group effort to strive for beauty, ideals and an understanding of how our minds work. Everyone builds on the breakthroughs and discoveries of the previous geniuses, from the Greeks improving the anatomy of Egyptian sculptures, to anime artists using the drawings of Rembrandt to work on pleasing simple form and colour. Geniuses are the first ones who unlock a new realm of understanding, which we are left to figure out and understand and marvel at their ingenuity and mastery.
The periods when people stop studying the past seem to be the periods with the most backwards progress in art, for instance the naive and crude understanding of isometric perspective and proportion employed in the Middle Ages where it was forbidden to actually paint a nude woman from life, or artists were cloistered monks, or the modern world of contemporary art, where snot nosed pretentious dyed haired faggots think that art history is just patriarchal old racists painting sexy nudes (as if that's a bad thing).

What I'm saying is, do some studies of masters you like. It might give you a lot more reward from your painting, give you the language to communicate between the image in your mind and the canvas, and it's immensely rewarding to study and breakthrough the thoughts of these geniuses laid bare for all to see and unlock.
