>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) remember to thank those who've redlined your work accurately. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>Where do I go to learn to draw Anime?
Read the sticky. And then come back and refer to the thread doc (pending)

>Community Resources (pending change)
Use the back link on "last thread" to look at the resources. This is changing momentarily.

p.s seriously, don't ask me.

My dude. You seriously. Need. To learn. Some fucking anatomy. At least the basic proportions and the possible shapes of virtually every joint. Only then you can start drawing such complex poses from imagination, and if you do so, post them in /beg/ first.

Just fucking compare your drawing to >>3305663, or >>3305337, or >>3305338. I'd normally redline even really shitty pictures when I criticize them, but this one is unsalvageable, and I don't care for this character enough to prove my point by drawing it from the scratch. For fuck's sake, the only things that are remotely bearable is the hair and the fact that the eyes are positioned like they should be.

Simple poses are what Nsio shows here as examples of Level 0 through 2nd Mastery. I'd define them as poses shown from standard angles, without bending joints so that they visually deform (like what happens if you raise your arms to scratch your head or tie your hair in a tail), and lacking distinct motion.

>>3305939
I see a strangely shaped head, weird-looking face (although not the weirdest I have seen from you; perhaps I'm getting used to your pics?), and strangely positioned neck, and the outlines don't read well since the lineart is so unclean. Can you draw the outlines of her neck and skull in blue and on another layer (then disable the underlying layer and see if you've got any errors first)?

And yes, as we have already mentioned to you multiple times, you definitely should use neater brushes. My experience says that unless you stop using a blurry brush, you'll always be nagged about your pics being blurry.

Yeah. Don't be afraid to do things that you like. I like drawing stupid OCs and right now I want to understand form and edge control so I'm using this brush that lets me twist it to get broad strokes like when you're using a pencil, and I try to imply light on my characters in a believable way. I feel like I learn a lot about form and I'm still drawing the things I want to draw.

Oh neat, thank you very much! Sorry for such an obvious question, I'm still a beginner when it comes to drawn art. I should just consider "beginner" poses to be more neutral in position then. Though, should I also assume that certain parts of the body could be neutral as opposed to others, right?

Yes. If I understand you correctly, the least "neutral parts" are legs (if you bother to draw all of their muscles correctly), feet, and hands. The most neutral parts are the torso, head, and limbs if the latter are simplified to the extent when they become cylinders.

>>3306119
I'm pretty sure this is impossible. Neck rotation does not affect the ribcage. Here's how I see it.

>> No.3306168

>>3306147
That makes sense because the legs are always supporting weight (even when sitting) and the hands/feet are naturally their own beast. What I'm getting is that It pretty much just boils down to the distribution of weight then. But anyway, thank you very much for the tips!

The term for what you're talking about is "center of mass". It shifts, according to the position of the body, and it's up to the artist to capture that, to make the drawing look more credible and realistic. It's a very common thing to work on in life study courses, with models. You're on the right track, you just don't have the terminology for it.

Something to think about, feet don't exist outside of that. Feet are important. How the feet are placed can finish a drawing, or ruin it - the feet "ground" the figure, our eyes look for cues for volume, scale, and perspective, and the feet are part of that. That's why you should work from live models, and not photos, because you get the whole figure, and a lot of "reference" (Around here, porn) doesn't have the whole figure.

I would honestly advise learning how to animate because it's harder to cheat things like perspective in animation; you can't for example, change a character's design mid shot to make it easier to draw from that angle

You're using a lot of cheats that I don't think you're even aware of, simply because you don't see your art in motion

There's a weird disconnect between brushes that look like they're supposed to emulate traditional media and brushes that almost look like abstract 3D models or stock photos of smoke. If you understand this then forgive me but some blues lean to red, some blues lean to yellow. Some reds mix to a bright orange, some to a dull orange. Some yellows mix to a green, some to brown. Knowing this will give you the ability to contrast colors to kick off of each other and will solve your problem without the need for lightening or darkening. Lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin red, Indian red, prussian blue, cobalt blue, these colors come in hues as well and will react differently to each other and the opposing colours mixed from them. Artists often wrote their own color theories, it's part of the mastery of art.

If that where the case we would have almost every chink that publishes high resolution images with watermarks plastered all over the image but we don't see that and yet people still recognize who they are without the need for signatures or any form of identification thereof.

How do they recognize who is who? The choice of medium, the workflow, the graceful line qualities, their unique way of establishing composition and their own idealized figures and their own method of refining form with light and shadow.

This is the first time I've watermarked an image because I generally agree with the Japanese mindset and find watermarks intrusive, but there are some different factors you aren't considering.

1. Japanese artists that sell at events like Comiket, Comitia, Reitaisai, and other events like it generally don't sell for profit, only hobby, because the market usually dictates that you sell entire doujinshi for no more than about 5 bucks a pop. This isn't the case at western events where even single posters(which are usually given out for free along with purchase at JP events) run $15~20 on average. A thief does not need to plagiarize an entire book or set of drawings from me, just one image.

2. This isn't hypothetical prevention. I am having issues with thieves both online and in person, with scalpers even selling some of my stuff at the same event that I am at. >>3309446
Unless I upload this stuff at ant-sized 300x200 or something these guys don't care, they'll print blurry images.

I personally believe that if someone really likes my art, they will just image search me or ask around to find out where it came from, but I've kinda been forced to do this since this is my job, you know?

Generally I start with darker, desaturated midtones that are close to the local color. Then I just think about the main source of light-- if it's warm, then the shadows tend to be cooler and vice versa. Saturation near terminators is great for punching out shapes of dark and light? Those are some basic ideas but I still very often may randomly pick some colors then paint over it with a non-opaque brush and let some random hints of different chroma shine through from underneath. If you just put some stuff down and push it around you might find some colors you like more than what you initially had in mind. If things get too out of control there's always masking with gradient maps and/or color balancing that can help you pull them back in.

(Thanks for the kind words btw!)

Also to answer your question regarding helping things "click" faster, I guess the most solid piece of advice I can give is to not be afraid? It's horribly vague advice but it's something useful for pretty much every part of the process. If some aspect isn't working, don't be afraid to change it wildly or even start over. Frankenstein what you have to maybe see something new. Likewise, when putting down colors don't be afraid to put down big notes of color broadly and opaquely. I guess also don't be afraid of fucking up. Pretty much every picture I've done so far has been fucked up but the next time you tackle a similar problem you'll remember how you fucked up and maybe you'll find a better solution this time around.

Some words from Hawthorne that I found useful regarding this:
"Don't spend all morning on a beach study; if it's a bad one you can do all you know in twenty minutes. Start a new one. I don't want you to work one minute after you don't know what you're doing--better start again and carry it further; don't work after you've stopped seeing logically."

"Don't paint thinly as a student-- later you will, but there will be something lacking unless you first learn to paint with more pigment. Paint with freedom, it gives you more mastery of the nature of paint. Make a lot of starts; wait till later to try to finish things."

Hawthorne often downplayed the importance of drawing but I think even with that you can take some advice from him a la carte with no problems-- it just depends on what kind of look you're going for.

>> No.3309673

>>3309614
>>3309649
Thanks for the detailed reply.

However, isn't the Hawthorne part kinda contradictory? It implies you shouldn't bother trying to finish pieces without enough skill, but how will you acquire that skill if you're in a negative feedback loop of never feeling good enough to finish pieces?

I think it's important to note where he's coming from. He's primarily speaking from the perspective as a teacher at his school to his growing students. He's giving mostly advice for doing away with preconceptions his students had regarding art. Because of that, he often downplayed drawing and encouraged just using broad strokes of paint so that the students could separate their technical illustrative skills from thinking with paint in big blocks of volumes.

So really, I read the advice as not being about literally not finishing a piece because you don't have enough skill or don't understand. It's more like, you will learn more if you start many things and failing often instead of falling into the trap of trying endlessly to refine/fix something that didn't actually work in the first place. Once you've made it over a particular hurdle, now you can quickly take on the next hurdle in the same manner as the first. For example, let's say you have issues drawing gestures. Instead of drawing one gesture and then trying to flesh it out with proportion/perspective then rendering, you'll probably learn faster by just drawing a bunch of gestures and analyzing what problems you had with them and correcting accordingly. Then when you get to fleshing out gestures, flesh out many gestures in the same way and again, correct them accordingly.

It's just a technique for approaching your work analytically-- it's just easier to organize your thoughts if you're not tackling a billion things at once. You can definitely take shortcuts and do this process for multiple steps at the same time while working on a piece from beginning to end if you want though. Just do what works for you. However, whatever you choose to do, you should be cognizant of what you did wrong so you can do it better the next time you try to tackle the same problem.

>> No.3309705

>>3309699
Every piece basically has some point where you start to have diminished returns for the amount of time you put in. Getting things to "click" faster essentially boils down to maximizing your returns. The more you "make a lot of starts" the higher your returns will be based on time invested. But you can't make the most of your returns on just that start-- at some point, you will have to hunker down and spend time refining. The area after initial returns is where you begin to discern yourself from other artists and is the hardest part to master because of how little return you get from it.
