Have altered the saturation and size of the birds. Any critique would be good. Though I'm mostly done here. Only thing is I'd rather not make it any more saturated as I think it's already becoming more cute than sombre/foreboding

The background is looking very flat and plain in comparison to the foreground. You removed a lot of the icebergs that helped create depth, and the clouds don't have much depth to them either. Sort of looks like a textured brush of a lighter color swiped once across a flat dark background color. It'd be nice if you spent a little time at least giving the clouds a bit of form too. One more thing I think could help add tension and a sense of foreboding would be adding a splash of red or orange or some bright color like that in the middle of the darkening clouds.

You're welcome and don't worry, I understand that feel. I was curious though, if you feel like sharing. I had liked your old work a lot and I like this new style too but I'm wondering how you transitioned from a more graphic style of illustration towards a more painterly and realistic style. Any particular books or methods you studied to do so?

Well it was more like a slow decision. I like how my old style looks but it didn't give me much room to improve my skills. Plus it wasn't very efficient or adaptable as it mostly had to be done on one layer in SAI. When I switched over to Photoshop I wanted to learn how to paint better in general, and about 90% of my motivation and inspiration came from other artists I discovered like Therese Larsson, Terryl Whitlatch, Aaron Blaise, James Gurney, etc. I wanted to pick up my favourite bits of knowledge from their art and add it to my own.
Literally spent all last year going through Terryl's books and being re-inspired every time.

Currently I'm using that Scurry comic and a sort-of inspiration (mostly the best methods of painting and layer structure for a painterly comic). Would recommend checking out that comic.

I post an unfinished portrait of usually an Asian person once in awhile here, using only a 2px brush, having it look like shit, lack value, no hair, etc. So I'm trying to get completely away from that "style" and trying to actually finish pieces. So with this, I feel that I:
a) Managed to complete an image (in terms of a portrait, sweater needs work)
b) Managed to paint hair that looks somewhat convincing
c) Achieved an overall painterly feel which is what I wanted/soft/hard edges and what not

All things that I want to get better at... So hence a study.

Anyways... I changed the size of the irises a bit.

This looks really good! I have one suggestion though:

I feel like the hair is a missed opportunity in terms of adding some much needed texture & detail to drawing that doesn't really have a lot of it. I don't know how dark the reference is, but just because hair is dark doesn't mean it can't have some detail, as more detailed hair can do a lot for a portrait composition. Maybe the reference doesn't show a lot going on in the hair, but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way. I've attached a very quick example of one way you could show some more movement and direction in the hair without totally messing up the dark values. Really subtle, large strokes can do a lot for hair. You don't have to draw each individual hair strand, but rather to try and capture the forms and direction of different bits of hair.

You've got a great grasp of values but I wonder if you're hesitant to go in and really render out different materials and textures, as this portrait has that very perfectly smooth 'digital' look. Great work regardless!

Few things:

+ You're trying to draw an onion that is sitting in a bright white space, but you're trying to use some muddy, greyish background. This will needlessly throw you off - for the sake of what you're trying to study, just use the white background.

+ Use a larger brush and make larger strokes. It looks like you're going in with a much smaller brush and just scribbling around, while not capturing the overall important details & textures. When rendering, it's more important to capture the overall feel & gesture of the details than it is the exact, pixel-for-pixel details. Think about the bigger, cohesive picture. Zoom out a bit and just block things in in a more simplified manner.

+ Use a brush with a harder edge (like the default round brush). Whatever you're using now looks terribly out of focus, and makes the form suffer.

+ The onion is much more saturated than it looks - especially towards the top where you get that deep redish/magenta.. Consider using more saturated colors.

Just some thoughts - hope this helps!

How difficult is it to go down to the store and buy an onion?

If the OP was a student in a school, they would have friends to borrow objects from, an art department with objects to borrow, and a dorm cafeteria to ask for an onion from.

Nothing wrong with getting out into the real world, either.

I'm digging the right tree, the bottom left one is my least favorite, I think you need to add more distinction between the trees and the terrain/lake, for instance try to add some rocks peaking from the snow in the ground,

Moreover I think the composition is looking to symmetrical, especially when I look at both sides, try to make it more organic by elevating or taking down one of the sides.

Fox should tie things together nicely. My only other criticism would be that the roots of the tree on the right; it does not posses a very pleasing negative space and is therefore a bit distracting. Damn, I'm liking it! Any blog?

Also do you have any tips on approaching gradient map on grayscale paintings, especially environments like this? Do you have elements with different local colors separated out into folders, then clipping a new gradient map adjustment layer into each one? Or do you just manually mask it on the go?

Thanks mate, most of my stuff is here:
https://exitmothership.deviantart.com/

I usually don't work this way so I don't have a workflow for that.
I plan to go about it like this: I create a folder for all the gradient maps, work out the most dominant and re-orcurring colors first and then painterly mask certain areas out of the raw layers until something nice comes together. All the smaller stuff gets it's own gradient map then and from there I render the whole thing. First gradient map should layout the overall mood of the image.

So, I'm just being commissioned for the artwork and haven't played the game, but basically each player gets an identical deck with numbered cards of a dagger suit (rather than a 3 of clubs it's a 3 of daggers, etc) and face cards which all count for 1 except the king. the different face cards have different modifiers and the goal is to have the highest score at the end of each round. I guess it's kinda like poker but with tarot-inspired artwork and fewer numbered cards.

yeah both are from imagination. I copied gesture images with a muji pen forcing me to try and make clean lines on every drawing. I feel like the silhouette could be more interesting. The armor pads kinda clash with the bulky thighs and since both are a similar size, shapes from both fade out. If I were doing it I'd make the armor pads at the side of the hips smaller and keep the bulky thighs, or the other way around and make the cloth between the legs bigger.

The way you've shaded it makes it look like, at a glance, that her right thigh is significantly thicker than her left. I feel like the left foot should be more in front and therefore the left leg should take up more space than the right. Her right shoulder looks like it goes way too low and her left arm looks much thicker than her left (i.e, her right arm has that whole Popeye shape going on whereas the left one looks bigger in the upper half).

Thank you for the feedback anon, you da man. I think I might know where the technical look came from. I been reading a book about plants and while I do really like the illustrations on the book, but they are really technical. It`s not really an art book but more of a informative book on plants. I most likely started to take ques from it without realizing. I did not really have a sort of look in mind for these, outside of making them not look like garbage.

Not really. Don't know if you've seen the orc tutorial but he doesn't work quite like this. I bought it when it came out and Dave has definitely influenced my style. I fucking love the guy!

I'm basically trying to emulate what I learned at a traditional art (charcoal/oil) course I took a couple of months ago as strictly as possible. Most recently I've been looking at tutorials from Maxim Verehin and you can definitely see some of his infcluences in my workflow as well...

Looks better but it just looks like the time you put into the rest of the face is miles ahead of the hair. Even compare his ear to his hair in the back. The detail in the ear is crips and well done but then theres like a lazy scribble for the highlight in the hair behind it. In short you dont like drawing hair so you dont put in the effort. The block only exists because you put it there.

Thank you anon, I like the weard face on left. The pilot(?) also looks cool.

Thanks, that helps! I don't like drawing hair because I'm terrible at it, I'll try to put in more effort and look at how other artists approach it.

Made quick overpaintings on both of these. In the BW one I just deleted the herpes from her upper lip (like I said you should) and I moved her lips and chin up just a tiny boit. I also faided some of the outlining you had around her irises. I think you should learn to lose some edges especially on smooth skin. Otherwise this looks pretty good and I like how you put that poetic shit in your post. Classy as fuck.

For the red chick I tried to softer her skin up a bit and tried to make her nose more "beautiful". I know it was just a sketch and I loved all those hard strokes on your original thing but (might be personal preference) I like to see some smooth skin on my demon bitchez! I also tried to give her some nice highlights on parts that make her look more effeminate. Upper cheek. Top of lip. Side of nose. Corner of eye. Corner of forehead.

Also implied that she might be looking at the camera. Her looking to the side of the image kind of lead me off the page and I think it'd work better this way...

Anyways I fucking love this one.You should apply for Blizzard or some shit whigga!

Sorry for the typos dudes/dudettes. I think I'm more drunk than I thought I was. Hope I won't regret doing this in the morning. Just take it with a bucket of salt.

I agree with the upper lip and the composition change (though, not that drastic) but the facial features were fine the way they were. Especially because it's a portrait (and even then...)

Thanks!
