Thanks, I've been studying, Loomis, Hampton and Vilppu for the past couple off months, so it's not like I haven't been studying anything. Maybe it's because I did all those girls without using a reference aside from a couple of things in there.

I was just trying to see how good I could be to at least get anatomy down. Proportions are a bitch to me sometimes. For some reason, it's still odd to me that they were all leaning like that though, maybe it's my positioning while drawing on a tablet, maybe I should stop using my wrist so often.

"Measure twice cut once"

It's ok, keep grinding and keep reading. But don't forget to go over your drawings with the books handy, and correcting as much as you can.

The relative sizes of the different body parts are easy to correct. The most basic step for beginners is the 7½ heads model.

Read > draw > correct > repeat

Slowly but surely you'll start internalizing knowledge, and you begin to execute with instinct.

Keep grinding anon, and good luck!

There's some interesting things happening with the color here but the overall lack of structure is really weakening this. I would suggest looking at a few animals you think this would most resemble and doing some studies of their heads in particular and how to construct a snout. I can't tell if you want it to be long like a dog snout or short like a cat or maybe squashed like it sort of already is, more along the lines of a gorilla or something, but no matter which one there's a way to do it that will make this beast look more believable and thereby more intimidating.

>> No.3299449

>>3299285
This is pretty neat. I'd only advise you watch the proportions a little. It looks odd to see such meaty legs and strong compact body carrying such a small weapon. I see there's some kind of cockpit which creates a human size scale. Since the cockpit takes up such a large portion of the structure it makes everything look relatively small. For instance if you picture an average sized human in the cockpit, those arms holding the gun seem to be about normal human size. I'd recommend playing around with the scale of some of the individual pieces like the legs and shell around the cockpit to push the scale and silhouette some more.

Proportions & general likeness is pretty good.

Two things that jump out of me:
1. Flatten your darks a bit into simple shapes. The reference (and other harsh light setups like this) won't have such deep darks. They can often be simplified into one or two dark values to block in shadowy areas. This is most noticable on his left (our right) eye area, where there is more detail than is necessary to describe the form.

2. Neglecting contrast. This is an issue I see a lot of folks fall flat. Contrast does not just mean a contrast in values and colors, but in other things as well. In this case, it's detail and edges. You're still learning painterly techniques so that's fine, but there's a missed opportunity here for you to really nail out some textures which makes the composition of the reference pack the 'punch' that it does. This is especially true in the beard, where you could really get in with HARD lines. This creates contrast between the face and the beard, which right now is currently only contrasted with smudgy values. Identify key areas of high detail vs low detail, and be sure to illustrate them. I really recommend using a brush with a harder edge for this (and just in general) as it will give you much greater control over your levels of detail. If you're working in Photoshop, trying using your brush presets with the Pencil tool instead of the Brush tool - it can yield some great results.

Attached is a really rough example of what I'm talking about. Just my opinions - hope this helps!

Why are Acrylics so fucking hard?
Is it because they dry so quickly?
Is almost imposible for me to archieve a nice look on most things because it always looks so amateurish, and small details are a pain. Anyway I kind of like how it turned out, the flowers look very cheap and half-assed but I put the best I could do doing them, the hair could have ended up better but I really had troubles with the transition and finding the right color for the light part, but overall it was a nice study to do. Are any good books or vids about acrylic painting out there? Most stuff I find is all about Oils.
Would apreciate really much critics.

>>3300268
You seem to be jumping ahead, what you're doing is very ambitious but you've got multiple issues, the biggest I'd say are - story-telling, proportions, perspective, composition. Having a good line drawing would resolve a lot of this. Nothing personal, it's very good you're being ambitious, but going back to fundamentals and doing studies is your best bet. Studies of still life, studies of photos and figures, perspective studies (drawing figures from imagination, drawing figures on a plane and making sure multiple figures line up), basic anatomy and form studies, etc. Really depends on what you wanna do but painting is very hard since it forces you to do everything to do much more, that's not to say don't paint but there's underlying issues other than color. Line is the basis for all of it, I'd start there, use good books from Loomis and others. Keep at it man! Mileage and adapting are the biggest things.

well its gouache, not oil/acrylic. its meant for illustration/posters. One person said it looks like a 40s circus poster etc. i dont take that as an insult. it is not meant to be fine art. honestly. i do enough of that. i am trying to evolve. i love this painting but i am still working on it. it suppose to FEEL like a comic/newspaper illustration. It was called this by multiple people so i think i succeeded. art is not limited to one genre.

i guess that a compliment. average people love this painting artists dont. I guess it is divisive. One artist said i should put the paint down and learn to draw. But when i drew this i wanted to stylize. everything except the woman suppose to be childish and the women soppose to be HEAVILY stylised. I dont know why artists hate it. Its a really good painting. the gouache dries fast so i am having craftmanship issues but i love this fucking painting. i am aware the compositional problems. i just wish artists didnt think everything suppose to look real. this isnt realism. it like old comic illustration. outsider art

I can't just keep spamming loose ideas forever. I've taken this project on to force myself to finish a piece, to take it to a somewhat refined state where I can say "right, now it's done," no matter how long it will take.

I can't really understand what is going on though. Who undressed the women? Do they wan't to be eaten alive? If not, then why is there no struggling? "Just pull your legs out of its mouth!" Why is there no blood? The animals are cracking their skulls apart to eat them. That's not a critique really. the other guy is right, the ladies are crawling out of the animals. The idea is that they transform into other creatures through their mouths, but you obviously can't transform into a human from, say, a mouse, that's too much of a size difference so you slowly scale up from mouse to ferret to rabbit to raccoon to dog to human. I imagine there's some magicy shenanigans going on facilitating this process, so if you don't think a raccoon's body could fit inside of a rabbit, you're right... don't think about it too hard.

Reducing images in general will darken them. Your app has to make a guess at a pixel value when reducing, and it generally favors darker. Back when I worked in printing, we'd have to apply curves to images when reducing certain percentages, like a 4.5% curve reduction in the midtones at 100% reduction. (yoou don't want to touch your white and black points, to preserve your contrast values)

Think very hard about the temperature of the light hitting your subject. How saturated is it? Then essentially pick the opposite for the shading. Always remember that a color's appearance depends heavily on surrounding colors.

I think a lot about why we choose specific colors and when but this is mostly organic thought that doesn't translate well to a typed out description.

Also pic related is a good way to think about choosing colors... when in doubt choose your colors along a curve.

You're certainly a promising anon, it's always nice seeing you posting in /beg/. These are nice, but in some ways I worry that may be a problem. The thing is Dynamic Sketching is a few things. First, it's a visual communication coarse, showing how things exist spatially and also a way of communicating a lot through a little (like gradated texture, contour lines, etc). But it's also a kind of visual note taking, and very helpful for building visual library.

But, that only goes so far in that you're drawing with curiosity, and to understand. I don't want to go into long theory crafty posting here, but I worry you get caught up too much in presentation and details and that hampers how much you learn with each drawing. The hatching and coloring on some of these things doubtlessly took as long as the basic lay ins themselves, in which point you probably weren't learning much

Another example are your leaf drawings. They're nice, very nice drawings of leaves, but what did you learn? Did it improve your shape language? Sense of perspective? Add to your visual library (the pitcher plant drawing seemed a lot more valuable in that regard)? Choice of subject matter is very important, pick yours based on how much you can learn from them, and avoid drawing redundant things.

So if I could give some advice it'd be
1. Don't draw subjects from reference that aren't adding to your visual library and helping you draw from imagination in the long term
2. Don't noodle it. Only spend as long on a sketch as you think it takes for your to "get it".

Thanks. I didn't think my boring ice study would get a response. And yours was helpful. Here is the reference.

Do you think I should have size variation on my hard brush? I currently have it at like 40%, and opacity at 5%, although even at 0% opacity I feel like it's a bit too sensitive; although if I turn pen sensitivity down I know that loose sketching and blocking colours will get more frustrating.

It's weird that you have a decent level of polish, while failing miserably on basic body proportions.
You made her torso very long and skinny, and the legs fat and stumpy. Pay attention to head proportions in anatomy, remember the middle point of the body should be a bit over the crotch. If you want sexier girls, make their proportions longer overall, and if you are going to break this formula, elongate the legs, not the torso.

Thank you for the kind words anon. I remember when I was going hard on perspective, I was absolutely obsessed about being able to turn thinks and show object from any point of view I want. I got pretty ok at it too, well, as long as the subject was not super crazy, but like chairs, tables, signs, cupboards etc. I do that a bit with these drawings, where I do not copy a photo or the object/plant from life, but more like I have the reference open in front of me or the subject I am drawing near by, so I can organize the forms to fit my chosen perspective/view.
>>3300997
Thank you for taking time out of your day to write such an detail crit, I really appreciate it. Yeah, I can see it, I do get a carried away with details and colors. I will focus more on drawing to understand. I do feel like I understand leaves better now, but I also agree that I did not get as much out of them as I should have. I also agree that the pitcher plants were the best when it came to understanding a subject. This crit gave me good stuff to keep in mind in the future, thank you anon.

If was really from the bottom then face would be getting far less of it, also it changes color from blue on pants to violet on shirt and then back to blue on face.
And the underside of the cape should be in light since it's facing down.

Generally it would be better, in my opinion, to erase most of the lights and leave only strong rim lightning on the edges of the figure for a better contrast.

Hair is - IMO - one of the most fun things to draw once you get the hang of it and you get a grip on a technique that works for you.

What I like to do is to block in all the darks of the hair, and then use a large brush to go in and draw the directions of strands to get the general feel of the structure of the hair. You're not drawing individual strands of hair, but rather trying to describe the direction different clumps of hair using a nice, clear brushstroke. Clumpy, wavy hair like this is fun because there's so much going on and there's a lot of movement to show. You've already got a good base for this, so I'd suggest trying it out yourself. Don't use a brush that's too small though. Again - you're not drawing strands of hair, just the general direction & movement of it.

Once you've got those directional strokes down, I like to go over those strokes with a light value/color and an Overlay / Soft Light layer, using the 'ribbon' technique to draw in any highlights. If you're not familiar with the 'ribbon' technique, search for it on Google - it's very helpful.

Attached is a pretty rough example of what I'm talking about. It's surprisingly fast to do and makes drawing hair a blast. Hope this helps!

Technically you've improved a lot but you lost everything about the old piece that made it appealing.

why all the gray?? it's such a boring colour
the eggs being visible had told a nice little story
you have way too much headroom when the bird isn't as big as in the old one
you also don't have enough contrast in the new one to call the birds a focal point

Not that you haven't improved, I think you're just focusing so much on your technical skill that you've lost touch of how to give your artwork life.

Yeah I know it's almost colourless in the new one. Probably desaturated too much. I thought the old one had too much colour though, Considering it's meant to be somewhat bleak and foreboding. This first page is just show that this is the setting and there's a storm coming.

I agree I didn't use much contrast; I think I'm gonna push the warm saturated colours up on the birds and nest so they pop some more. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for this post i'm definietly gonna put what you said to practice instead of just eyeballing where highlights/dark bits should go. What bugs me about hair is how complex it is. With skin you can just slap on colours and blend later, but hair takes a lot of refining to get it right. Here's my ref so you can kinda see what i was going for but royally fucked up lol

So this feels... plain, I just don't get anything from it. Maybe is because of the values as everything is light and the stroke is too damn soft, but whenever i try it to give darker values it looks just weird...

It would help to block in your values using a larger brush before adding details and pay more attention to the planes of the head.

Working on a single layer is fine, but learning how to use layers effectively can help if you end up wanting to adjust something later on.

Can I get some opinions on the lighting? Which looks more attractive (or a suggestion for a third one). Please don't tell me to go to Alt-Style. I just want more opinions.

>>3304124
I know you're trying to match the pic but imo it would look better if you gave more form to the hair, like the other anon did.

>>3304142
The proportions look a bit weird. Her neck is long and slender but her torso is huge by comparison. I can't help you with your shading though. Try weightier strokes for the to give it more contrast.

>>3304092
Cameras can be pointed up and down, and therefore it's reasonable to assume that it won't always be at eye level.

>>3304046
As the other anon pointed out, it looks better on a technical level but the old one had its own charm, like something that'd be found in Alt-Style. One isn't inherently worse than the other.

It's not bad.
You're failing to recognize the subtle shifts in colour though, like the greens and yellows in the sky, and some purples reds and yellows on the armor.

U got the more obvious ones down tho so kudos!! I swear I don't mean that sarcastically, you for real did a good job and the smaller colour changes can be hard to notice!

the story is really confusing. I think you made it a lot more clear that the ladies are transforming and have to build up to larger animals, I especially like the fox in there. But the men approaching the women are they hunting them? Are they friendly? They're so close and the forest has so little trees so surely they've been aware of each others presence for a while now. Why aren't the woman reacting so calmly when the one man looks so snarky

I'm sure you have a pretty clear idea but it doesn't read so well, I find myself just starring at the most rendered out woman's face and the closest mans face confused.
