I really like these "soulless random girl/dude looking cool doing random things while being well rendered" and I would like to draw things like this for a living, but is there demand for this in the western market? I always see Chinese and Koreans doing this kind of work, which is worrying. I would be fine being paid less than average (I'm not American so cost of life here is lower) but I wouldn't be fine not getting any work at all if nobody wants this shit here (I'm assuming I won't be able to work in the Chinese and Korean markets, but maybe I'm wrong).

if you can do pieces like this everyone will try to reach you, retard.

If you get nearly as good as this you will find work no matter what anon
Good luck grinding to get to this level though, pic related is incredibly good.

And yet that guy never works for AAA companies that pay hundred times better than whatever he gets in China. Think: where would that illustration fit in? Do you see it in a western FPS or open world RPG? Book cover? No, in the end it's only asian MMORPGs/etc. which want stuff like that.
I claim this guy wouldn't be able to get hired by any decent western company no matter how hard he tried with his current portfolio.

so do you reckon he can't draw literally anything else? you can apply knowledge to other areas you know

If you build up a proper fanbase you can sell whatever the fuck you want.

Depends more on the project rather than simply the company itself. Wei Feng's technique surpasses many working artists in the game industry especially, also he's sitting pretty comfy with his studio that rakes in outsourced work + students. Maybe he's even been offered a AAA job or two but required in-house relocation, maybe he just doesn't give a fuck, who knows.

Ruan Jia worked for Arenanet for a bit. Naomi Baker works there and seems influenced by that Asian aesthetic. The armor sets in Guild Wars games kind of have that stupid Asian style.

You could always make your own try to get Patreon bux and sell limited edition prints like Peter Mohrbacher. Normies like pointless pretty shit with ethereal backgrounds.

I was going to ask "what the fuck do you know about Wei Feng and how much he earns?" but this quote above just dismisses you as a retard missing a chromosome.

I'm pretty sure that's a personal work of Wei Feng, he doesn't just do "soulless random girls". And "Western/eastern market" means literally NOTHING if you're a freelancer. I know people who get regular jobs from everywhere in the world, including a friend who did several promotional work for a Japanese company despite not knowing Japanese or having an anime style. you sound like a complete newb who has no idea what they're talking about, OP, so you're probably worlds away from ever being Wei Feng's level anyway.

>> No.3298000

OP here, thanks for the replies. I am an absolute noob indeed, and I didn't mean to sound like I think I'm on this guy's level, I was more asking about the subject matter rather than the skill since I keep hearing that you must tailor your portfolio to your clients. In fact, knowing that super artists like Wei Feng, HGJ etc. can found employment is pretty meaningless information since I won't ever reach their level.

Look if you can draw at this level everyone on earth would want you. Tailoring portfolios is advice for the majority of artists who can't draw godlike.

Freelancing with chinese/korean/japanese studios is better than working for american studios.
Applibot currently pays more and fucks you over less than WotC, Wyrd or Paizo.

yeah if you're a shitty graphic designer lol...

Not really. Yeah, great painting skills will open the doors to you for many illustration gigs but for any more specific job you still need to have a portfolio that shows you can actually do that sort of work.

Literally just open Artstation and you'll find plenty of western artist drawing in a similar way, mainly working as concept artists/illustrators. Igor Sid for example works as an illustrator for Warhammer right now.

different anon, but Chinese in China make about 1/6th to half of what we make in the west regardless. it really doesn't matter how good they are. Even if they do the same job, even if they're better. I've worked for a Chinese company and made 6 times more than a senior level Chinese equivalent, my manager made more than the VP level in China overseeing our project. This is only because they need to pay competitive salaries tuned to the west. over there it's slashed.

I'm not anywhere near Weng Fei's level and I'm making a living in the west, so idk who you're trying to fool. Why downplay his skill as if he were mid-tier or something? This guy can make a living anywhere he chooses, this is a fact.

I use to work with them, pay was good but they don't hire westerners anymore, not like they use to. I'm not even sure they use outside people anymore save for a select few. I find it surprising i still see advice from crimson daggers era traded around here like it's canon.
