Hey guise. I'm thinking of applying to some of the mobile game companies in my country because I'm fucking broke. I don't normally do cartoony shit so doing shit like this feels kind of cynical. You're right. I need to be more selective with that stuff. I'm probably going to let the BG dictate where I put my rim lights instead of how they'd fall on my character if he were a 3D-model to get some light against dark contrast. Need to figure out that background first though.

>> No.3288799

>>3288590

I think you need to darken the shadows on the left to match the values on the right. Also you need to push the buildings in the back away to add more dimension. Maybe with some fog, softening the lines or lighter/cooler colours.

I like the style of the clouds in the background. Would be cool if you incorporated that style more in the foreground. I can see the potential in it.

really good rendering overall, the rim light is believable on the skin but not on the armor. you should treat them as totally different surfaces. skin has subsurface scattering which gives it a strong rim light when backlit
design wise his chest is the weakest point. its just a big sphere with a belt across it. either give him more unique anatomy or add some extra clothing for interest.
also if he's leaning forward i would put his whole chest further back in shadow

Really great points! I haven't really started working on the armor. I'd imagine it would catch some super harsh and sexy whites from the strong light and blues from the environment. I'm probably going to do the SSS last. Obviously the ears are where we're going to see most of it.

>either give him more unique anatomy or add some extra clothing for interest.

Since this is just a cynical: "Hey, I can make generic mobile game art. Please give me money"- type of thing I think I'm probably going to go with the extra clothing suggeestion because it's going to take me less time. Maybe I'll give him some sort of medieval vest? Hadn't thought of that so thanks for pointing it out.

A good start! Good construction and a subtle but clear line of action is present. Would love to see you clean it up more... by inking it digitally perhaps?

Something I would suggest is that since I'm personally not a fan of the whole solid shine dot skin thing, try using a different color than white for highlights on the skin. (actually, looking closer it's not WHITE white, but maybe a color that's not so jarringly different value contrast with the skin...) Color pick the skin and just pick a slightly more subtle value change. I'd suggest one with a slight leaning in the warmer range since light is often warm.

Also, just a suggestion for you to try, since your overall palette is warm--try shading with some cool color tones instead of warm to build that nice color contrast. That color theory yanno.

Can anyone help me with this? This is a rough sketch based on a previous one I did from imagination, I used a ref for the legs with this one. I want to know if someone can point out anatomical issues with it, something that looks wonky, not so much proportions (although these are welcomed) but things not being logical, anatomically impossible etc... If nothing else, tell me if I got the breasts okay, they are supposed to be a little squished by the gun, don't have a lot of practice with these kinds of stuff.

I know the rifle is shit, its just a placeholder, the full piece will get more attention to detail.

Thanks.

Like, you've captured my interest enough that it's a cool-creepy drawing and it kinda makes me wanna know more context, but it lacks to provide any. Like did he just kill something? Is he looking for something? Is he threatening the viewer? I'm not really getting any answers to these other than it's a creepy goblin dude standing in a cave(?)

It's not bait. I've given you advice and seen others give you advice and you're defensive every time. Yesterday you asked for advice on perspective on your bear or dog guy or whatever grabbing his junk. Someone told you it was off and you said you didn't know how it could be off since you were using a reference. One glance in the beginner thread should tell anybody that having a reference doesn't mean your drawing won't be flawed. It takes time and training to look at it more objectively and translate it accurately.
It would benefit you to absorb critique and reflect on its merits without feeling a need to defend every drawing. Coddling each piece you work on will keep you from accepting and correcting your weaknesses. Mileage is everything in drawing, a certain detachment and ability to redraw or move on is good for it, and feeling less pressured generally leads to better pieces.

Okay... If you're not going to use photos as reference I think you should look at some artists who do this kind of work (stylized realistic females). Look at art from people like Samuel Youn, Artgerm, or even Sinix/Sycra. Shit like this isn't my specialty so I bet somebody could give you some better examples.

Even if you're doing a stylized thing I think you should be comparing your thing to something. Doesn't mean you have to copy their styles or anything but look at the kinds of proportions they use in their work and try to figure out what pleases your eye and what you want to use.

I'm >>3288859 and I'm completely out of my element here (I don't do cartoony stuff) and I can't even look at actual, straight reference here so I pulled up a bunch of Blizzard/Clash of Clans style shit and I'm vaguely basing my thing around that aesthetic.

I can't say much about your facial proportoins at this stage except that they're kind of flawed but your brush work looks nice. You'd need to give her a proper nose and a more defined mouth so we could really start to analyze her proportions. The round eyes are an appealing idea and you could incorporate those into your final piece.

>> No.3289778

>>3289739
As I said, reflect on the merits of a critique without responding defensively. Whether you think it's a good critique or a bad one, say "thanks I'll keep that in mind" and decide whether or not you'll use it. If you think they're just trolling don't reply at all.
The trend I see with you now is that you have some idea you're trying to do but don't know how to so you come to ask for advice, but when given advice you argue with the critiquer because what they say doesn't match your understanding, even though that's to be expected - if it matched what you knew then you'd already know what they're telling you to fix and you wouldn't have made the mistake in the first place.
Anyway I've explained the reasoning behind my assessment, why I think people have the impression you don't accept critique and what I think you should do about it, and that's as much as I'll invest in it. It's up to you to implement it, or not.

Another thing that grinds my gears is people who don't say anything about what they're trying to do with a piece.

It's really hard to crit a piece if it's just a random scrible of a naked chick with wings and the message attached to is:

"Plz crit my art. Am I gonna make it?"

Who fucking knows! Are you trying to become an illustrator or a concept artist for example? Is it a study? Is it from reference? Do you want me to crit it as a character design or an anatomy study? Are you going to get rid of the line work? What the are your goals with this piece? If the answer to this question is "Idunno lol" you need to re-evaluate what you're doing and why you're doing it.

Here's a method: try taking a hard edged brush, pick an "outside" color (in this case, the blue of the BG), and "shave away" at the edges of the drawing of the face to clean it so it doesnt look so fuzzy. I'm assuming you're "painting" this on a single layer.

this could also apply to the inner details of the face too. basically lots of color picking and cleaning up around the edges of features

i think, stylistically, it could pass off to be fine so far. I dont know what else to tell you because it's not finished. most details I'd reccomend are more for final touches, but I can't really say because i don't know for sure until it's done.

Also, just to consider, remember to balance out your work when you're doing an illustration--you wouldn't want a well rendered face and then "unfinished" hair/bust (unless that's your artistic choice, but that's another conversation for later lol)

I haven't seen this but man this blog is a great resource for the kind of shit I'm trying to do now. Thanks!

I've been looking at some of Peter Stapleton's (pic related) YouTube tutorials and he's another bloke who seems to have a great grasp on painting 3D-looking forms on cartoony characters. Doing cartoony stuff always felt kind of dirty to me but I'm slowly getting over it. I don't think I'm ever going to like looking at pieces made in this style though. It's just not my cup of tea but I need to get some work so... Yeah.

It's fucking killing me that every time I learn a new trick there are 10 new styles or techniques I want to learn and 10 000 people who can do that shit better than me. Painting iz hard bro.

Here's my 10 minute over painting. Your image has more expression and more unique facial features but that's not what I'm trying to fix here. I think the cheek bones are overly emphasized in your image. They don't look like that in real life even if you're skinny. His head is too narrow and long which fucks with the ear placement. You don't need to have that moustache stubble yet. Just focus on the anatomy. Your nose was all kinds of fucked up and too small so I tried to fix that. There's also an unrealistically long gap between his nose and mouth.

I think you could save time by doing some proper line art before even going into values. When you actually do go in with values you might want to show some more range even at the start. Your values are stuck between 40-80. It's a good idea if you're working in traditional but you're working digitally so you can tweak that shit later!

I don't know if he was supposed to be super stylized in your original images. If that's the case, you should have said so. If he's super evil you might want to make the eyes smaller.

Anyways. This looks nice and you seem to know your shit. I hope I don't sound too harsh...

Thanks for all the help guys. Yeah the thing I was trying to do was getting a better hand at painting values with what I had learnt so far and ended up squashing his head and didnt notice. The character I had used was actually one from a game (League of legends reworked swain) which is probably why he looked so stylized and not like an actual person from real life.
But all in all I really appreciate the feedback.

Thumbnail looks nice but the image is kind of fuzzy expanded on my screen. Nice first attempt anyway so GG! Try using large hard brushes for as long as possible and staying zoomed out. Zoom in and move to smaller brushes when you can't put in any more detail otherwise. Only use soft brushes when you feel like you can't blend stuff anymore. I'm only saying this because you said this was your first time using Photoshop. It's not universal or anything. Good start brahh.

Well it kind of looks like you went in with a single cloudy brush and painted all of it with that which is a challenge in and of itself. It's really up to you. I'd probably sharpen the things closest to us. The edges around the nose and the eye closest to us and possibly the bottom left part of his chin and lips.

Did you notice that he looks a little bit cross eyed? It's not a big deal but I just noticed it when I opened the image and looked at it again.

>> No.3290117

The rendering is too defined?

I one time got a critique on Conceptart.org that stated that my painting had depicted too much "depth" and "three-dimensionality" and that I needed to flatten the forms and un-define them.

I thank you for trying, but the ear and the crossed eyes can both be reasoned by A: ears usually aren't that important, and the exact placement of them varies from person to person enough that the placement being off by a bit a little bit usually isn't so grave a mistake that it's distracting. And B: the crossed eyes look more to me like focused eyes, as focused eyes do tend to cross like that depending on how close the object they're focusing on is.

The rendering is rather on the loose side as far as realistic rendering can go. It kind of sounds like you're trying to give me a critique that will shift my art more towards what you like, rather than what you think will help me do a better job of being true to my own personal expression, style and tastes as an artist.

Well I guess it's better to show than tell. I don't have the skill/time to emulate your rendering style but I did the best I could.

I think any of these eyes styles would be better. The first one is your original thing but fixed so that he's not cross eyed. Second one is lizard king mode and the third one is watching at the camera.

I added a smidge of red to his nose and cheek and I used some different brushes to make them look a little sharper than the other parts of the image. I liked the white part you had in the corner of his eye but I think it's positioned wrong.

What I want you to do:

1. Set that sketch layer to 50% opacity.
2. With a thicker brush, draw over the sketch with long & confident lines. The longer, the better. It doesn't necessarily have to 100% follow the lines on the sketch layer.
3. Once you've finished, clear the layer and repeat ad infinitum.

This is to work on line confidence and pen control. While you know what the shape looks like, you're using extremely small strokes that actually hamper the end product.

Challenge yourself on focusing to create more iconic designs. Work on the silhouette of the character, and the details within.

Why does he wear THAT shirt? Why that armor? Is he part of an army or organization? Sometimes it's more fun to see the different iconography on a character. Remember, this image should be all a person needs in order to understand this character.
Is he married? Does he wear jewelry? Does he have scars? What about his past does he carry with him? Are there patterns on his shirt or pants? Does he come from a rich or poor family? How do people treat dragonpeople? Are they seen as lowly people or highly regarded? Is he in battle a lot, or is he more of a handyman? Why those boots? Does he travel alot? Why does he have sparse armor pieces? Did he pick it off of some dude he killed? Then maybe he keeps more trinkets and stuff from his victims as "trophies."
How do those pants fit him when he has a tail? Perhaps there's extra seamwork that might hint to that. The straps on his bicep armor seem flimsy, really put some solid, tight belts on that. It's a lot of information, but it may be a good idea to write way before you even start drawing of who exactly this guy is.

Technical skill wise, it's not horrible. Definitely mediocre but capable and shows room for improvement. My main concern is that you're not thinking in Graphic Shapes. Establish clear, understandable value/color shapes before adding soft transitions. Having these hard graphic shapes will keep the painting from feeling less muddled and grey.

that's exactly my point. textured brushes are fine you just have to learn a balance. i didn't overpaint it i just blurred it and fixed the edges and colours that were out of whack so cool your jets jfc

heres some words to go along with the edit i guess

>textured edges on the face makes it look like his skin is peeling off
>eyes looked flat, i saturated them a bit and smoothed them out. again, i doubt you want them to look like blocks of rough stone as opposed to jelly-like eyeballs. i did try to keep them in your style though
>corrected the muddyness with saturation around the areas w most bloodflow
>softened lips because, again, with your brush they appear chapped
>i saw you were trying to make the shadows more magenta so i thought i'd show you what it would look like with that

i know you've denied it vehemently before but it is clear you're trying a wei feng/ruan style with extreme sharpness and texture. if you want to emulate that, props to you. but study them more and learn how to balance such extreme noise in your image. notice that theirs don't look flaky- just detailed

It's not that I deny looking I guess vaguely reminiscent of them. It's that I don't have to think at all for my work to turn out just like it does. The style aspect is auto-pilot.

If you practice drawing faces like a particular manga artist for long enough, you eventually get to a point where it's more natural than what you were doing before.

I know what brush RJ uses majority of the time. It's a standard chalk brush(the size 36 one) with the sea sponge texture overlaid in the dual brush settings. He builds up his texture with the sea sponge texture set to multiply, or color dodge/burn. He sets his opacity to pressure sensitivity, and lowers his flow on the top bar to really low levels. That is how he builds up texture and color.

that is not how be builds texture, yea he does use the chalk brush on some of his, but thats because he knows what hes doing. you are blending and making these shitty strokes its like you believe its all about the brush and ignore everything els. RJ softly glazes over areas and then uses other basic flat/round brushes to render the details, and occasionally will render with a dual brush. some are fully rendered with a dual brush but theyre rare. just look at pic realted, very few strokes softly glazed with texture and not over rendered like some retards believe the shitty 500 hours on each painting. you are making tiny strokes, he does not.

I like how you think I don't know how RJ paints, or how he achieves his signature look.

The brush doesn't matter. It's how you use it. RJ builds up texture by rendering while zoomed out. The result is a scribbly mess that looks tacky while zoomed in, but produces texture when zoomed out and downscaled. That's brush abstraction. I already know a lot about Ruan Jia's workflow. I studied him pretty intensely for a while.

I've decided to put the vehicle and figures in. Did a lil vehicle sketch. I'm going for something that feels practical, and not so "vidya", if that makes any sense.

Does this design seem sensible?

1: brush abstraction is not a thing.
2: its called painting at a high res, big canvas, its not a digital thing. look at high res images of oil paintings
3: u still dont know how he paints, considering pic related is yours.
4: he doesnt paint zoomed out all the time, look at his videos.
5: youre a novice.

Looks nice. Maybe you could have a little shape in the middle bottom part to make it look just a little bit less boxy? Where are you going to place it?

BTW thanks for the geothermal pool thing! Those things look alien as fuck and I'll be sure to use them in something later on.

I did a little study of Edwin Lord Weeks today. Just attacked it with large blotches of color I thought I saw in the original. Didn't try to go for accurate proportions as it wasn't the focus of the study. Rendered some parts I found interesting like the metal thingy on the elephants head. I really want to learn how to indicate materials and these 1800's travelling artists were fucking amazing at it!

Please tell me if you know of any similar artists. Guys I found:

John Frederick Lewis
Rudolf Ernst

Thanks!
I was going for something that looked a little clunky and boxy. Something out of Alien (from 1979) sort of. I might add some details to the siding though, like rust or bolts etc...

Not sure about the placement yet. It will be facing the viewer at an angle so depending on placement It will have either a light or a dark value, and be pretty dominant, or at least eye catching with it's (artificially) straight lines and all. So, I need to be mindful of value grouping and composition.

That study of yours looks great though! Gonna go further with it?

You might already know about this, but in case not: You seem to bee looking for "orientalist art". Just google that, and you'll find many more painters like the ones you've mentioned. I think both Zorn and Sargent had a little oriental phase, so that might be worth check out too.

They are either people who's art I like, or anons I've followed back to chat with or follow development. I'm also pretty bad at unfollowing, like when someone follows you, and they are kinda good but you're interested, so you follow back, and a few days later they unfollow you... (hate that)

Yeah. I bet a boxy car like that would work great juxtaposed against an organic mushroomy BG.

Not gonna go further with my study. I don't put that shit in my portfolio or anything. Basically got what I needed out of it!

Thanks for the "orientalist art"- tip! Found a ton of interesting stuff. I wish we had more art from precolonial South America. Oh well.
Made a quick dino sketch with my new iPad Pro/Procreate. Started with a random mess of shapes and ended up here. I've had a lot of problems 'painting' with this thing. The line work always seems to go great but I'm so used to painting with Photoshop it's really hard to get shit done here. Might revine this thing with my beloved Photoshop for another hour or something. Ehh...

I totally agree with you. I've actually studied Sargent a couple of years ago (pic related). You're still right though. I'm also struggling with my new oeypad.

I don't think that stroke economy comes from studying though. I think it mostly has to do with how much you've painted in general. You'll make more confident strokes when you know what you're doing (which I don't really 90% of the time)-

So I've got a question, I boight some Loomis, and his lessons have been helpful, but at a certain point there's a hump where it's hard to progress past. How did ya'll get past lessons that you didn't want to do, or it's stuff you already know how to do, just a different method. Cuz I don't want to move on to more advanced stuff until I get through them.

If you'd post we could probably tell you why you aren't getting responses. Often times it comes down to the kind of reply necessary to convey the problem your work has or how to fix it. A picture with a simple issue that can be resolved with little effort on the part of the commenter will likely get more replies than one that has lots of issues that may or may not require a paintover.

A suggestion for the composition in the future since you pretty much can't change it now, I think a longer reaching shadow would help pull the weight from the bottom of the canvas and to the top. maybe moving the head a bit to the left and making the shadow diagonal.

Well it's just as I thought.

None of this is outright bad, it's just amateur. It shows a general understanding of everything you put into it such as the folds of her clothes, her anatomy etc. So it's not easy to critique in a concise fashion which is why it doesn't draw much response.

It falls into the category I described where a little more nuance is necessary to critique it, which most people don't care to spend their time on, or, to describe my reaction, it's just a "blah" drawing there's not much to get in a fuss over technically or creatively.

But if I were to re draw this character for you, the lines would be tighter, her pose would be less stiff, and her face would look a little less weird... but I'd need a tablet to do that soooo...
