IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I dont agree with that. You can browse pixiv and see tons of different styles in amateur artists. Some even make mistakes but already have a defined style.

It all depends on the type of drawing you do of course and quality but a style is also your tendencies such as small mistakes you tend to make or things you value over others.

Don't misinterpret lack of fundamentals for style. You should know why the nose looks the way it does/form and then you can exaggerate or de-emphasize that part how you like, creating your style. Meaning you should understand why the kawaii xoxo anime gurls only have 2 slits for their nose and why that works. Don't just put 2 slits for a nose and call it quits cause then it'll never look right or you'll force yourself in to a form of drawing that's always copying because you don't understand it enough to draw it yourself. Style isn't magic it's knowing how to emphasize the forms you want and diminish the forms you don't.

im not really good at critiques so ill just make a list:
the eye is really large and not in perspective
the mustache looks like it's his mouth, probably because the actual mouth is really small and i think too high, also because the lines you used for the mouth are really light compared to the mustache
the ear is a really strange shape, it curves forward on the back instead of being rounded outwards
the whole face looks like its too far forward, kind of like its just sticking off of the front of the neck
the nose and forehead look really weird, like they're too flat
the hair looks really wiry, you might want to try drawing it in clumps instead of individual strands, especially with that brush and if you aren't going to really render it much
the neck seems to short and thick as well
i would say that you should try doing some skull studies, that will probably help with the general placement of features and the jaw

if you want to you should also check out this steve huston video

Hey man, it's great that you're getting back into drawing. I got 3 tips for you:
1: Draw from life more instead of photos. If you don't have access to nude life drawing sessions then pose naked in your room, I don't care. Trust me on this, the quickest way to memorize the human form. Photos are great supplementary material but can't replace the real thing.
2. Try sketching in pen for a little while and think about the motion of every line you make to improve your draughtsmanship.
3.Don't spend too much time on /ic/ or Discords like Putsu's. As long as you draw in shapes and visualize forms, it doesn't matter what technique you use, unfortunately, /ic/ is extremely autistic and thinks that there is a formula for everything when it really is just deliberate practice. Also, the Discords seem like they have "good" artists but they're all just arrogant pieces of shit that think they're better than everyone just because they know the basics.

I'm already drawing in pen, and I try not to spend too much time here, unfortunately i won't really have a way to study from life but at least I'll be able to learn quite a bit from photos as proof of my old drawings. Hey /beg/, I have a question. Usually when I'm drawing, I don't stop when the exercise is "finished" (because I currently lack the skill to draw it correctly), I stop when I'm overpowered with shame. I know it looks wrong-- I don't know how to fix it, but I can tell it's off, and the longer I work at it the worse I feel. I know the solution is to power through the feeling and keep drawing, but how? Has anyone else gone through this?

I go through the same thing and I've found that it really is good to write down some real failings (for my most recent session it's line economy, and proportions) and some things you're pleased with (visualing form and quickly capturing the figure)

Then take a break. And I don't mean do somthing else, I mean make a concious effort to enjoy yourself, even if that means just a nap or sitting somewhere other than your work station for a bit. take as long as you need.

I do try to fix mistakes when I can identify them, but I'm still at the point where even when I fix every mistake that I know how to fix, my work still looks shitty and amateurish (because I am a shitty amateur). I know practicing more is the solution and that I'll eventually learn how to identify what my mistakes are to fix them on my own, but it's still demoralizing to try so hard just to end up with a polished turd.

The only problem I see is that the lines are very shaky and messy, but that is probably just down to unconfidence with lining so I'm sure you can get better.all the other 'problems' that could be discussed are all style choices which in the end is up to you, I mean I would say the proportions are off, but you won't learn without trying so just keep drawing and testing new things.

Do you think drawbox's exercises will improve your linework? Do they look like something that would benefit you if you committed to them, or do you think you would just get bored by repeated exercises?

Every time I draw no matter what it is, be it traditional or digital I feel that I am lacking. I just never have any inspiration as my bland pieces get buried by inferior artists in the group that I post to; never to get any responses, critique, or anything really. It seems like you don't really don't understand the fundamentals of drawing. Your drawing is ridden with symbol drawing most noticably in the face, hair and hands. The body seems like you drew contours first and then traced over it on a different layer. Not using references doesn't make you better if you don't undetstand what you're doing anatomy and perspective wise. Also you seem oddly pessimistic about your art considering you consider it superior to others in your group. Swallow your pride and grind fundies. Actually read the sticky. All of it.

that depends. in doujins some use lines, some tones, some have more advanced techniques from 20+ years of experience. pick your favourite artists whose way of drawing you find most appealing and based on that look for a tutorial/guide.

if what your are asking is the very basic. how to shade at all. you basically separate where light hits the body and where shadow is created. start by simply outlining then fill them. after that you have to adjust where shadows are darkest and where lightest. in doujins you dont need to smooth things with brush like you would on some realistic painting.

pic related. pure black over eyes. grey for hair. white where there is none. its very elementary.

Make a line of action. Just take a page and draw a line with a bit of curve to it. Maybe draw another line across it. Then try to align the spine and leg curves with it and draw in the torso. The pose will usually end up looking aerial. Then try drawing a line of action where one foot or both are anchored on the ground. The line of action should be pressing into the ground in some way.

Also, an easy way to add a lot of motion to a pose is bend one leg and straighten the other.

Completely disagree. You can teach yourself proportion and other fundamentals and explore them w/o relying on reference.

Then when it comes to accurately depicting a figure/portrait from reference you have a base of understanding on the placement and proportion of everything.
This is especially helpful when tackling difficult poses or trying to capture the likeness of a portrait; Both of those can be difficult for a beginner and having a base understanding of the fundementals by practicing those things can be better than tackling hard references straight on and not knowing why you're sucking.

Do you mean it’s a shame I copied the sketch to study? I have original pics If that is what are you looking for.

If you're going to elongate the face, use smaller features. Especially the eyes. It is too much caricature without much contrast, so everything feels like it's geared towards one side.

I've seen you post this twice. Anon, if you know there are issues with this, please redo your drawing on another paper. I'm not fucking around, you will actually benefit from redrawing the pose until it looks right.

Have you heard of this cool book called Andrew Loomis's Figure Drawing for All It's Worth? I hear it's really popular 'round here. No seriously, if you copy some of the more fleshed out mannikins (pic related) and actually read the damn thing with intent you will improve (so long as you also do life drawing of course).
I'd recommend avoiding all of the simpler mannikins as they tend to end up looking too stiff and fake. Just copy each one of his plates like a madman until you get it too look his drawings and then try applying the shapes you memorized to real people.

Glenn Vilppu's videos for teaching you how to learn anatomy and figure drawing through observation techniques, Marshall Vandruff's perspective series, and for learning how to render and have good shape design try Kienan Lafferty's videos (also has good figure drawing stuff for beginners as well).
