can someone give tips for constructing anime heads? I've been studying proko's guide to drawing realistic heads, but obviously the proportions don't match up with anime style faes (e.g. see the attached image, where it's apparent that the brows and the base of the nose are high relative to her ear and the tilt of her head). I could just memorize a bunch of different proportions, but it's hard for me to figure out what landmarks will have the same relationships regardless of rotation.

The eyes are bigger even if you do more "realistic" anime eyes they're going to be bigger, which brings the nose down. A small chin and youthful faces are what you're going for.

Tbh reference asian girls with circle lenses and double eyelids, you'll get a good idea for the representation they're making that you won't get from drawing western models

Honestly when it comes to anime though you're best off just copying existing anime until you get a feel for it, then applying what you like to your own stylization of it.

Can someone please redpill me on using layer modes for finishing touches? I wanna say it looks cheap but at the same time it does bring out the colors more. Kinda frustrates me that I couldn't just produce those colors in the first place, guess I need to be more daring with my color choices.

Drawing still a WIP but this has been bugging me.

>> No.3283480

>>3283444
Layer modes are part of the digital medium and are perfectly valid to use to get the look you want. To me it's the equivalent of adding medium to paints to change how they work. If you're painting with oil or acrylic you can add glazing medium to the paint to make it semi transparent and glaze a layer of paint over other paint to colorize it. You can also add gloss to change how light hits it to make it have extra sheen and glow. That's no different than using layer modes to achieve the same effects. These functions exist because of photography too. They could capture a very colorful scene but they too would use similar techniques to emphasize or sharpen parts and downplay others or create other interesting effects. Manipulating the raw image is part of making it your own, in every medium.

>> No.3283488

>>3283480
Never thought of it that way. I still want to wean off of layer modes but now I don't feel nearly as bad using them for last minute touch ups.

>> No.3283489

>>3283488
Just one more thought on that, I think a piece should be planned with layer modes in mind. Using it after the fact is what cheapens the look. It stands out just as badly as adding a stock lens flare on top of it. So my advice would be either work with them through the whole process and make everything cohesive or plan to paint it all manually.

>> No.3283492

>>3283489
That makes sense, I actually was thinking that while trying to come to a conclusion (akin to how regular people tend to abuse Instagram filters). I can definitely see layer modes being useful in the long run, so I'll keep practicing and understanding how to use them effectively.

>> No.3283498

>>3283492
Good on you. It might be helpful to read up on the techniques I mentioned, manipulating paint and photos this way and to what end they do it. Even when photographers do it the good ones factor the editing in while they're planning and taking the photo, they never tack it on at the end.

I noticed that when I'm doing studies of stylized works, there are certain stylistic decisions that I would've thought to be incorrect or look bad were I to do it in my own original stuff.

But on hindsight those decisions actually do look really good.

So how do you internalize/normalize/ingrain these kind of stuff, so that I can do it on my own in my original works, without me ""correcting""" it in the end?

exciting linework my friend. i suggest a traditional approach to your use of colour and tone, real watercolour on high quality textured paper, so you can get a better feel for how it should sit on the page. the face is very stylized and seems to be coming from cartoons / graphic design, but you seem to be being over ambitious with the form of the hand and body, attempting to depict it quite realistically, but theres a bit of a style-disconnect where the neck meets the body. doesnt really fit! keep the stylized theme more harmonious. try thinking about what you want the artwork to achieve when its complete, and which approach best suits it- for example an observational, traditional realism drawing style may deserve a painterly approach to the lines and tone, as well as accurately depicting light. or a more graphics / illustration based approach, which is rooted in printing processes, would allow more creative freedom in the shading / lighting, but takes more skill to be able to refine down a complex form like a hand gripping a doorknob. i think you would have much better results with traditional techniques instead of digital painting. other tips may be to vary pen pressure, alter the settings on your brush and maybe look into using / creating custom brushes. clean up lines that dont have an aesthetic smoothness / shakiness. some of them swoop really nicely but some, like the neck of the shirt, look lazy and a bit weak. great work though, lot of potential!

right so, her right hand looks a bit off, the fingers (minus thumb) could potentially be fine but the hand itself looks off, the thumb looks off too. Her sleeve on her left arm looks a tad off, I'm not too sure if its rolled up or why it looks so marginally different from the other sleeve, seeing as it kind of bends outwards? Her toes on the left foot seems a bit left out, unlike on her right foot.
I'm not too sure about the hat, something seems quite off about it.

It's getting there but its being kept from being cohesive. Where your character sits in 3d space is unclear, mostly due to how the perspective changes from the head to the body. The head feels flat in the back, so give it a bit more mass for balance. Based on her pose and expression she's pretty tense, but her body language doesnt portray that very well. Bringing the shoulders in closer to the frame helps show she's in a 'defensive' pose. Keep it up, its about perseverance.

Pretty good, a few pointers, mostly compositional
>try not to have the staff be totally flush and 1-point with our POV. It flattens the whole drawing when everything is a little tilted away from us but the staff is dead on. I get you wanted to show off the design but this is a full piece not a thumbnail of the silhoutte
>The graphic rectangle creates a lot of bad tangents. There's two with the right side of her hair, one where her right thigh plate touches the corner, and in that same area one where the space between the character and the staff is too close for comfort
>Also if you want to add a graphic shape as a background find one that compliments the character silhouette. Think of the silhouette as one large simple shape (triangle, circle, rectangle) and choose a different shape to compliment it. Your character's silhouette is roughly rectangular, so a rectangle of about the same size as the character and proportions similar to the image itself was the worst possible shape you could have chosen.
>also not sure why you decided to crop the character, seems like you cropped off the parts that'd be easiest to draw. Doesn't really do the composition any favors either, almost all of your negative space is partitioned in big rectangular chunks because of the rectangle, cropping, and staff.
>I'm not much for criticizing the design or anatomy bit by bit but tl;dr there's no unity. She has the helm of a demonic sorcerer, staff of a holy priest, armored shoulders, wrists and thighs but not chest, and even her clothes are a mix of more feminine and roguish styles. If I were playing a game that had this character in it, like an MMO, I would not be able to guess what class or alignment they were just by looking.

Basically good fundies but work on your design and presentation anon, you'll be pro if you get those things right.

Linework, drapery and hair are all great, but the anatomy falls a bit short. By comparison her right arm is small to the proportions of the rest of the body, and the posing feels stiff and vague around the rib cage and pelvis, so make sure they work together to make the pose read as best as possible. Also, changing her right hand to a pose with a stronger angle allows for a better arc and sense of movement with the drapery its carrying

Sure, that's one way to go about doing it.

However, I usually work on the head and the face before doing the hair, so then I can draw the hair in a way where it would compliment everything else.

Also, detailing at an early stage would give me a basic idea on how things will look before it gets polished.

I'm not an organised person. I just draw anything I want to. but there's a few personal principle that i follow : no eraser. / no baseline. / draw twice per ref. first, try copy exactly in precision. and then, draw it again without looking. finally, compare those two.
almost all of my studying depends on references. I become human photocopier. except when it comes to making OC. I didn't use reference for that image except for a foliage texture at left side background and fishes.

An anon was asking for help with this a while ago and I said I'd try to help with the face.
If you see this anon I hope it helps. I tried not to change too much of what you had, mostly changed some proportions. I made the head taller, the eye a little bigger (big eyes are appealing even on males but try not to make them proportionately too big) and gave him a bigger jaw. You weren't far off from the Taylor Kitsch features, once I re-positioned the things I mentioned it already looked a lot like him, at least to me.
Good luck anon and sorry I took so long.

OK so I tried this, I see the point, but how do you go from a sketch from a reference to this (>>3289143) kind of utilization of the anatomy ? Like is it with practice and time that it becomes easy/natural ?

before I explain, please keep in mind that my method may not be the best choice for learning something.

the foremost goal of my study is to make drawing very trained and experienced to the point that I could draw it without consciously thinking about it.
for example, when I'm making OC from imagination, I gotta draw arms 1. without ref. / 2. without erasing too much. / 3. finish penciling under a minute per arm. If I fail to, then it's not good enough for me. because I must don't know how arms work and looks. so I just draw arms over and over and over. I can practice arms over a hundred times a day because I don't really care about quality. ( note that I don't use eraser and baseline ). I just flood my brain with arms. I don't care how bad and messy it looks. because it's practice.

I think the most important point of this method is comparing two drawing pairs from same ref. I think If someone want to draw well, he must know where he mistakes. without eraser and baseline every aspect of every practice must go somewhere wrong in a huge level. ( as I'm not kim jung gi level. ) then I can somewhat easily examine between the one drew by looking ref, and the other drew in pure imagination, and finally ref itself. both approach bounds to have errors in different aspect.

in short, I draw something deliberately making many mistakes (no erase no baseline). and find out what did I go wrong (two drawings per ref and compare). and try not to make that mistake next time (drawing over and over).

again this method is not proven to be successful and I don't think it is a good method other than lineart comfort zone dwellers like me.

I'm hoping someone could help me with this sketch I'm working on.

Been drawing for a while now, but I'm using homemade photo reference for the first time. I like the overall gesture that I was able to capture, but the torso and how the left leg (her left, my right) is attaching to the pelvis seems to be kicking my ass. I don't know. I can't get her obliques to look right at all.

I'm kind of a fatass so I don't think that's helping get her stomach and legs the right size and orientation.
