The second one on the other hand looks like its off to a really interesting start. keep messing with that black and gold robe look with the high collar, I think think you have something good in the works. Furfag speaking. I listen to every constructive criticism I get, and even if there doesn't seem to be apparent changes, believe me when I say I do my best to adjust to them. Off the top of my head, the things I'm working on based on what the anons around here have said are:

- Better construction. This one's always been ambiguous and he never really elaborated but I'm assuming he meant more proper form/anatomy. I'm still working on that of course, and if anyone could provide some references that feature chubbier people that would be great. For the past few months, I've mostly been extrapolating from lean models since they're the ones I know best. Recently I'm doing some studies on more muscular people but that's because I still can't find any decent resources for chubby people, or I'm just really bad at googling I dunno.

- Expression/facial features. I've actually been working towards a less "obnoxious" style in that regard. You can see the eyes and mouth have gotten smaller over time. Still a WIP of course.

- Better composition/subject variety. Kinda hard since I've been mostly trying to focus on improving a number of other aspects of my art (many more that aren't listed here), but at the very least I do strive for better composition. I tend to stick to my raccoon/fan characters because it's one less obstacle to worry about, but it's not something I'm planning on neglecting in the long run. Sounds like a pitiful excuse but I am planning on making that push in the near future once I better understand lighting at the very least.

Anyways, thanks for getting me to write all this up. Helps to put my focuses in a more tangible form. I'd like to see your responses to >>3276258 and >>3276224, though.

Since you;re working flat, you need to take advantage of this fact and focus on inventing extreme and interesting shapes that sell the concept, nailing the composition, and playing with patterns and textures. Also, you could try to bump up the contrast.

Was commissioned last week to do some emotes for a streamer. I rarely do anything stylistic of the sort, but I tried my hand at it and he seemed to have liked it a lot.
So, I decided to continue working on said style. This is just some practice at clean lines for future commissions. The subject isn't anything but a place holder. Any help on the lines would be greatly appreciated.

I say, don't be a pussy - flatten the whole thing and work on top of it!

>> No.3278868

>>3278842
Basically I usually draw clean, maybe even inked lineart and then start coloring it with layers. The problem is it takes me so long to get the lineart cleaned up I'm usually too drained to want to color it and if I do get around to coloring it I'm always left with this black outline that doesn't mesh with the color. This time I left the sketch rough and jumped into coloring. Now I don't know how to bring it all together. I think what I might do is go over it now with a simple but clean lineart layer, block in a little more light and color and then paint it flat. But since I am a pussy I'll probably still paint on separate layers once it's flattened.
I wish I could work out how other people approach this shit.

don't worry about anime or not anime, it's a fool's hill anyways

be careful with your use of black, you lose a lot of the legibility on the legs when they melt together. i really like the shoes too, but your perspective on the front one is a bit off, the toe should still be rounded in some fashion i believe. the shoes too blend in a bit to the pants, which may be a desired effect, but with how detailed you went with them, i'd probs experiment with how to more effectively make them pop in some manner so they stand out more on their own, maybe some more rim lighting but more subtly than i can currently do in mspaint with a mouse lololol

i like this a fair bit too, you posting anywhere on the net?

This looks promising.
-The hand on the left is too small, and the gesture doesn't look like quite like she's gripping the cloth. I'd enhance it by bending the index finger at a steeper angle than the rest of the fingers and elevating the knuckle of the middle finger above the others.
-The eyes look slightly misaligned. I'm not sure whether it's the open one that needs to be lower or the closed one higher, but I lean to the latter.
-The leg that's passing behind the sword needs a line continuing it on the other side of the sword all the way at the bottom of the picture.

You ever try using a Screen layer above the inks? Paint-over the bad parts in the line art w/white - even colorize the lines (apply colors over the lines in the Screen layer.) Then you flatten the screen layer with the original linework - set it as Multiply over a normal layer - for the flat colors.

>> No.3279606

>>3279599
I saw someone mention something kind of like this a couple days ago. Theirs was turning the lineart layer itself to overlay or color burn or something like that and letting it blend with the colors underneath that way. I've never tried colorizing the lineart in either way, I think I'll test them both out on this one. Thanks for the suggestion!

That is better but make the fingers a little longer. They don't match the length as the fingers on the other hand right now. And I forgot to say that her ear and the back of her head are too low. Looks like you got the eye alignment working so try to line the ear up so that the ) curve lines up parallel to the ) curve where the open eye meets the bridge of the nose, following the same tilted angle both eyes are following so it will be slightly higher than either eye currently is. That might need adjusting but I think that should put it in about the right spot.

I can think of one reason actually, not him though

If I wanted to resize a huge image down to ~1000 pixels maximum, I might either take a screenshot of it with ShareX or crop it in MSPaint, then paste it directly into the quick reply box as an attachment, so I don't have to save it somewhere under a different filename like "image resized.jpg" then upload it.

If I then wanted to crosspost it later, rather than editing it again I'd just save it from wherever I posted it then upload it that way.

Just wondering guys, do you think it's more effective to just do greyscale values till I get good at it or do colors and values simultaneously?

>> No.3281868

>>3281865
Get a solid understanding of values first through painting w/ grayscale. You don't have to reach an expert level before you start using colors, but you'll find it much easier to work with colors once you know the basics of values.

>> No.3281936

>>3281890
I wouldn't recommend it. I put everything into learning proper construction and anatomy. Now I draw well but rendering and color are hard for me and not knowing them keeps me from achieving polished looking pieces that look cohesive. It also means I don't really have my own style. Experimenting with it now is fun more or less but I wish I had integrated it into my learning earlier on when I was more flexible, I'd probably have learned to do some really interesting things by now.

>> No.3281978

>>3281936
I'm not taking that other comment seriously because I wasn't asking for drawing advice. I already know I can't draw well.

I'm kind of the opposite. I wish I knew more fundamental stuff when I started to draw more. But I never took drawing seriously until now. I just really hate colouring and I don't know how to approach it.

>> No.3282018

>>3281978
I always hated trying to color too. Two things helped me get more into it. Mostly getting Clip Studio. Photoshop never felt intuitive to me and always seemed like the most effective coloring with it was more based on using layer effects and manipulating tools instead of physically painting. Clip Studio has that stuff but also has tools that work a lot more like traditional media that I clicked with immediately. With CSP I didn't have to slog through painting and coloring anymore so I got more mileage and finally started being able to see bad trends and correct them.
After that tutorials, books, and studies were more useful to me. Once it wasn't such a chore I finally felt like practicing what they showed. Then I was all around more interested in color and started examining it more closely irl and in art and taking photos or saving examples to study from. Since those two changes I've made a ton of progress with color. Maybe some of that will help you too.

>> No.3282020

>>3281890
You don't need to, as you could make an entire painting even with abstract shapes and a good use of color. It is bad advice to say "fundies first" imo.
It sure helps to have a good sense of form and understanding light when it comes to shading (shadow and light), but that will come any ways with mileage.

I've seen other comments talking about greyscale and values. Would you recommend learning and mastering that first?

>> No.3282107

>>3282048
I'm not anon but I think it's good to practice in grayscale (I encourage doing fun works alongside studying works yknow? Or you'll just get bored and not learn how to apply it).

Take your image into any program capable of it and greyscale it. A lot of the values disappear or blend into one another. I have this problem as well.

It can be a useful skill to learn to paint over greyscale too so you can learn color alongside it.

I'd say to focus on your line weight, right now it's kind of all over the place going from thick to thin without a whole lot of obvious reasons as to why; the best way to practice doing so is to simply look at artists you like who have good line weight.

Otherwise, i think it's looking quite good. Keep it up, anon
