The main thing I was thinking about implementing is a more generalized challenge and streak counting mechanism. LAS would be simply be one instance of a daily, public challenge where the rule is simply to post a minimum amount of work, but people could instead make shared ones with different posting frequency and rules like the old community challenges. Alternately, a challenge could be a private daily/weekly/whatever one where the streak under that challenge doesn't count towards a global ranking but a user has the option of keeping any submission under it private.

The LAS challenge would be a no-token elimination challenge on something like a one or two month cycle, and everyone who completes it gets some kind of badge. Users would have the opportunity to join the next one or go do something else for a while. Shared community challenges would up the ante for anyone wanting to do more than the bare minimum, and private ones would cater to less competitive users who just want a bit of external accountability without necessarily throwing everything they do out into public scrutiny.

Yes, you should do shading. No, you don't have to make it smooth or aim for the super realistic approach.
Just do hatching/cross-hatching and/or just draw a line around the shadows.

No you don't have to do tones, it depends entirely on what you're studying. If you're studying facial construction then blocking in values isn't super relevant, Also just get markers or watercolor for if you are interested in blockin in values. Just break things down into 3 values, white, 50% gray and your darkest dark. It'll be good to render some stuff out at some point tho.

w-wow, i'm flattered. i don't know how to answer your question, but i can give you my main sources.

Micheal Hampton's method of construction is by far my favorite. I definitely recommend his book "Figure Drawing, Design and Invention." His methods clicked with me when I was struggling to understand Bridgman, but this is personal preference. You should find at least one teacher/master you can always refer back to when you need anatomy/drapery/ect advice.

I was also fortunate to stumble across a magazine issue
"Creative Masterclass Anatomy Essentials", which compiles a bunch of different anatomy tips from different teachers. It is a really REALLY great read if you want a little bit of everything. (pic related)

666pigeon is my inspiration style-wise. whenever i start to think too highly of myself, i take a quick look through their gallery.

nope, didn't color pick because I know color is one of my major weak points, I still don't properly know how it works. I did color pick one time, I didn't use the color but I color picked to determine the skin color of the portrait, I was too curious. Turns out you can paint a completely blue face and it will still look like skin if it's next to the right colors.

I'm not joking when I say if no one else is doing it, I'm fully willing to make one. My skills have grown crazy rusty despite doing software development as a job, so this is a great opportunity for me to improve my practical experience. cubebrush is doing a contest again and I'm not delusional enough to think that I could compete with the professional artists that are entering that contest, but I decided I'd do a character design anyway so I'm studying the process of character design while i go. also a random finished piece i did this morning.

oh whoops i forgot to respond, yeah, I used a reference that i took myself. the subject is lit by dim blue christmas lights and is holding a lighter so the yellow and blue mix to become pink and purple on the skin. it's quite amazing.

for choosing colors from a reference just be reealy careful when you choose your colors, make sure it looks like the ones in reference before you start painting. then study and remember what kinds of colors can be present on the skin and where, what colors can be used to shade in neutral light etc. I'm not an expert by any means so you might want a second opinion on that.

I don't think it's cheating, at least I hope not, I do it all the time. I guess it is a bit easier if you zoom in on the details and reference them in your work, as you wouldn't be able to do that in real life, but otherwise I don't really see a difference. And hey, no rules, just tools. As long as you're learning something it's fine to do whatever.

I’m sorry- I said the skin needs to be rendered better, but taking a 2nd look, my advice would be to grind more face studies. I know that doesn’t sound helpful or specific, but your problem isn’t one specific thing. You lack a solid foundation in constructing the head, and so everything built on top of it looks “off”. (It shows in your last piece as well.) So I’d focus on taking a step back and refining those fundies.
You have a fantastic way with clothing & drapery already, so I know you can do it!
