Just learn to do it in grey-scale first sp you can train yourself in seeing values. Another good way to get a feel for it is to do pencil-style renderings. If you look at mine a lot of the rendering is just pencil style strokes.

Crab mentality is one of those things that you always observe and recognize in life, but you never knew there was a name for it.

It's just the basic application of envy, jealousy and self-loathing. It's a lot easier to bring someone down than to put in the work to bring yourself up.

Additionally, people often feel that they have it harder than others, regardless of their circumstance. This often allows them to react negatively to people's success while also feeling justified and guilt free in doing so. You see this a lot when people get into the idea of "natural talent", or when people seem to just "luck out" and get featured on a social media platform.

pro-tip: speculars on metalic objects partially reflect the object's local color. So if you're painting gold, make the specular yellowish, white will make it look like plastic.
Look at photo reference.

Mind, a couple years back we learned sting rays hang out in that bit of ocean to try and avoid migrating southern orca during the summer, and someone I knew got a barb lodged in her thigh in knee-deep water and had to spend a week in hospital getting surgery then IV antibiotics.

I forgot about the jellyfish. If there were jellyfish, we just plain didn't go in because those fuckers could blow on up the coast by the boatload. Case in point: the velella at the end of last year that basically covered the beach from dunes to shore. Sometimes the jellyfish that wash up aren't so innocuous.

This is basically my first real digital painting study. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Do I just keep refining the forms, blocking in colors, then blend/add details? I didn't color pick, how is my accuracy? Anything else I should know? I'm working with an opaque brush, will this fuck my shit up?

So, does the color look shit because I'm doing something wrong or is it just overall better to start with color and keep grayscale painting for studies?
It's some gradient map fuckery with overlay layer, but I just can't keep the saturation under my control.
