Some skinwalker women getting caught mid change. THere's going to be a hunting party aproaching from the background. I thought it would be neat if they shapeshift by actually puking out their next form, so in order to transform from, say, a mouse into a human, they'd have to go through a bunch of steps leading up to that which winds up leaving a gross trail of dead animals

You aren't paying any attention to form and it's especially obvious on the snout. Try constructing from basic shapes in perspective, and use your lines to imply the form. If you look at actual wolves you'll find their fur often 'wraps around' or sprout out in certain directions. Most good drawings of things like wolves use hints of the fur (but don't individually draw all the fur or or it'll look like a mess) rather than solid line to imply form.

No one's stopping you, but it's just more productive to post there, if you're doing almost full CG like this.
Also, Photoshop is a normal workflow for any 3D illustrators, doesn't exactly make it 2D though. Unless you're going to do an actual drawover/paintover, that is.

Practice concept for a piece I'm gonna be doing later. It's going to be a huge undead spider demon queen with a bunch of these little fuckers growing on her back. This is just a sketch for how one of those egg/creatures on her back might look like. Still need to design the queen, composition, etc. Trying to make things look as icky and scary as possible...

>> No.3261071

>>3261013
This looks like a piece little bit after the blocking of values phase, there's still job to do with the midtones plus the texture of materials and the hair for example, probably more but that depends on the reference.

It's not necessarily bad, just push it further so you can make the best out of your study. Have a goal in mind beforhand and it'll better for you, in this case you could narrow it down to a face study instead, that alone can take plenty of time but is more focused and you can learn a lot instead of trying everything at once getting nothing out of it.

>> No.3261082

>>3261013
is that "study" finished? if it is, it's sucks, if its not then i can't critique it. Right now you just have a bunch of random values sploshed around, nothing looks like its supposed to but that can be attributed to the unfinished state. I would recommend doing basic shapes first as it looks you don't have the knowledge and/or skill to render values yet.

Tanks for the crit. I didn't go into great detail with all those demon faces but I'll definitely have to do a better job in my final image. I think the tiny baby arms on a skinny undead creature are kind of unnerving. Maybe it's just a personal thing. I didn't do a really good job on them though. Looks like a little Michelin man. I think I should give them some more articulated poses (like pic related). Hmm...

It's very stylized, and it's one of the few times I've used a gel pen for a drawing.

My own critique:
- The parts entirety of the background looks scratchy from not using a proper ink pen.
- I don't make use of enough use of graphite for value in this drawing, and any shading there is, is very rudimentary.
- The right hand is smaller and looks less bestial than the left hand.
- Speaking of the right hand, the way the wrist and hand is bent looks very awkward.
- The entire right arm is fucked, because I seem to have drawn it at the wrong angle when it should have been, at least, somewhat facing the viewer.
- Those things on it's shoulder's are very badly drawn from how badly it's shaped to how little shading there is on it, to how I tried to cover a mistake by overwriting it with more ink.
- The pitiful excuse of hatching on the man in the picture shows that I have to get more practice in handling my pen.
- The letters on the side are too dull to effectively seen and the patches of white shows that I didn't take the effort to fill them in.
- Those "things" in the background look like they don't serve a role in the drawing aside from, "oooooh, edgy"

Does anybody have anything to say about this drawing that I may have missed?

I think your work still looks too CG-ish if you know what I mean. I recommend getting tutorials from guys Maciej Kuciara, Eytan Zana or Marek Okon.

I think I could make your piece look pretty good if I could paint over it for another 12h (Which you should definitely consider doing. Now it looks like a matte painting plate you give forward to a concept artist. Basic 3D with really obvious photo bashing like the knee pad and the kid behind her, the face etc. Come on!

It's a good start but it falls right in the middle; The 3D render isn't good enough and what you did over it isn't good enough so either learn to shade/render/model/sculpt better or learn to draw better. Sorry if I sound harsh but these are the things I picked up looking at it...

I mean look at this piece from Marek Okon for example:

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/vRB6

He's also using a 3D base but he's not giving an equal 2D rendering treatment to every part in his image. He's going by what's in focus.

Some concept work from Maciej Kuciara:

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/2boye

He's going for a really photographic feel but the atmosphere is the focus in his pieces.

Here's a piece from Eytan Zana:

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/5WBE1

He paints a lot and uses a lot of photos but everything's still tied together really well and I prefer his work tot he ones mentioned previously.

One more artist I'm going to mention is Jama Jurabaev:

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VYAyP

He also has a 3D-base but he goes in with some strong shape language and interesting colors. He can also produce some pretty realistic stuff.

Maybe saying it looks "CG" was the wrong word. I mean it's too easy to see which part is a random photo, which part is 3D etc. and drawing over everything is a great way of tying it all together.

Based on your own critique I'd say you have a shit ton of work ahead of you, as most of what you did isn't intended, so scrap any value from it other than nailing each individual problem and work on it (not full drawings, keep them as narrow as possible to see the results).

Gesture, construction, form, anatomy, perspective, you should focus on those because none of it shows in your image. If you are into learning inking and pen I'd assume you know how unforgiving it is, you could fuck up at any point and that is gonna stay, only good thing is the reminder that you need to fix said mistake but you'll have to work over it which is pointless if everything is wrong.

Practice with an HB pencil for now and if you want to learn to shade try it over basic forms using different hatching techniques like pic provided, the should fit your death metal album cover kind of style you are going for.

You have lot to work on so be patient, have fun and don't be a faggot.

For gesture, construction, anatomy and such Proko is a safe bet, his anatomy courses are recommended around here so you could try that.

As for pen and ink, Alphonso Dunn has lot of stuff regarding the cross hatching technique and how to work with the medium, don't know if his book is available here but if not check the artbook thread for other options >>3245999

First ask yourself, "what is he doing?" Then ask yourself, "how can I either make what he's doing more interesting, or change what he's doing to be more interesting"

I'll be honest there's very little interesting here. Personally I want to tell stories with my pictures, so coming at your illustration from that angle I don't see a story, everything is too plain and straightforward no to mention poor composition.

You can slavage this though. What if he was looking into the woods as opposed to his axe? What if there's something HE sees but we don't? and he's readying himself? How could you tell a story through his appearance? does he have fresh blood on his body? Is it his or is it someone else's?

There are lots of things you can do, try some brainstorming and experimenting.

Maaaan I don't know, the way I learned is to just keep drawing things that I found challenging. I also made challenges for myself, like I wanted to be really good at drawing a proportionally accurate human figure at a really small scale, which I found difficult for a long time. SO I just did it over and over again until I got it right.

For yourself, you don't need to follow any specific rule set via proko or loomis or whatever. Look at everything and just draw what you learn, rinse repeat. But don't take that to mean you have to constantly grind, if you don't enjoy the learning process you'll never stick to it and how you enjoy learning is for you to know or figure out for yourself. That's more important than where your learning comes from.

If you are op I think you have a major problem. You should understand that everythings you are thinking is not going to reflect in your painting. So even if you have some sort justification in your head it will still look weird by others. You have to put elements that makes the universe coherent at this point since your original content (skinwalkers) is already set in (and not make it more complex).
For example some sort of substance on their body like the other anon said. Also the lower jaw of the wolf should be hanging down. Maybe there is some clothes on the ground that they left earlier

the idea is very nice. the dark strange lighting seems unnatural and uncanny. i like it in a way, but still the individual elements don't interact with each other very well: the figures seem to have nothing to do with the forrest and ground, the trees are seemingly hovering above the ground, the shading on the animals is way too sketchy and doesn't match any of the other elements.
if you planned to put more work into this, no problem! right now, it doesn't go together very well. i mean not everything has to blend in perfectly, but believe there is a way to make it work, if you know what i mean? it can still have some of these odd convergent "mistakes" in the style, which make it interesting.

id be uncomfortable with posting a work in progress at that stage. it's odd that you would work out the vases this much while you still have the rest of the picture in sketched outlines. how do you get an overall feel for the whole picture? it seems to me like your working method is all backwards.

>> No.3262953

>it's odd that you would work out the vases this much
I spend about 30 minutes a day painting, and I focus on singular objects. I finish one object, then the next day finish another, and so on, to give each one distinct personality. It's a tic from learning art through portraiture, where I would do the gesture, render the face, the hands, and the feet, and then treat the rest of the body as "the background".

Usually the walls, table, and indistinct portions of the painting are done last when I paint.

>> No.3262979

that's an odd way of approaching the work as a whole. i work very differently and i usually want to at least have a haze of a background going to see if everything is falling together well.

>Usually the walls, table, and indistinct portions of the painting are done last when I paint.
aren't you afraid that that is exactly how it will come across? that you didn't care about the background? to me, even "empty" spots need to compliment the character of the painting.

>> No.3262989

>>3262979
>aren't you afraid that that is exactly how it will come across?
no, I'm not afraid of that, because I'm doing that on purpose... I'm infusing more character into the objects of the still life on purpose. I don't really care about the superfluous objects and background. I treat those parts as more abstracted than the objects. Usually I use the walls as a time to do some expressionist brushstrokes and mess around with nonrepresentational painting.

The guy that asked about the vertical foreshortening was someone else, notme. Also, not to be rude, but I don't see how your diagram makes sense. With those lines you're laying both her eyes and head like a flat plane, when in reality they have volume and any line going across them should be affected by said volume, especially considering the 3/4 view, and the fact that her head is tilted down like the other anon noticed. What I mean is: thanks for the redline, but this is not helping me understand my issues.

Eyes are spheres. Imagine two pool balls on a table with similar spacing and viewed from a similar angle to these eyes. The ball further away does not magically turn into an oval.

Likewise the eyelids have a set thickness and wrap around that sphere. If you're thinking in 3d there's no point where an oval can come into play like you've shown.

Even for stylized eyes, the ones drawn well are still simplifications of what the eye actually looks like from any given angle. Only garbage or heavily stylized eyes will treat them like a flat sticker, but even then they're probably breaking the rules of perspective at that point too.

Whazzup with dat shoulder? Even if his/her body was extremely turned it wouldn't look like that. The head is also really small compared to the arm. It gets super highlighted since the character looks kind of child-like so you'd think they'd have an even bigger head...

Love your lighting, ambient occlusion, sense of design and and brush usage. I wish my sketches looked as good as this...

>> No.3264723

>>3264694
Thanks a lot for pointing all of that out! I can see what you mean now, and I'll fix it. About the shoulder, it was supposed to be some kind of fur coat but I pretty much had no idea what the fuck I was doing and just kept painting (and I still don't know, I was thinking of cutting most of the left part of the frame soon). I was afraid to make the head bigger because I usually make them too big and anime-like, the polishing only kept making it smaller for some reason, so it all got lost somewhere along the way. The fact that you wrote "his/her" is enough reason for me to make her head larger again, I hope that's enough to make her read clearly as a young girl. Thank you!

Well, I'd love to do a paint over but I don't have a tablet at home so I'll say that her left eye (our right) is too small and you could stand to make her right eye smaller. It seems you're going for a slightly anime-ish style so the small nose and mouth work pretty well. The light hitting the underside of her brow is not working but to fix it and fix her brow in general you'd have to tweak her eyes and I think if you just get rid of, or blend in the light hitting her brow you can hide the fact that it's bad and you won't have to fiddle with her eyes too much beyond resizing them like I said earlier.

The realistic clouds in the background don't match the style of Grim, remember to keep the style consistent throughout your piece. It's not an absolute rule but generally one which you should keep in mind unless you're going for something.

Another thing, controlled edges nigguh, everything feels slightly blurry and gives it this overly hazy look which feels like I'm tripping.

Values and lighting seem everywhere and doesn't seem consistent like you kept changing where the light source is and because of this it feels really flat in some areas (snoot). I'd say your main problem lies in construction, parts of Grim feel like they've melted or warped which looks off putting in a way and because of this weird construction it fucked up how you should perceive light on it.

Overall it's a nice picture to stick on your progress wall, but it's best to move on and start exploring more elaborate ways of presenting a character and taking my advice as what you have is kinda boring in a way, it tells no story, no humour and falls away from how cuphead presented this boss.

keep pushing yourself, and remember to critically ask yourself is this the best I can do. I don't know how long it took you but take your time, a painting doesn't need to be completed in a day, take your time to think it through about what you want to present how you would like to present it. A little trick I like to do when I come near to a paintings finish is ask how would of my favourite artist painted this, what would have they done differently as a guess and try to use some of that intuition upon your own painting.
Sorry for spreading this out poorly I can't write well but I tried.

Take my image as a reference. Look at the flat planes on the image and compare them to the planes on your drawing that's in the same position. Then you just copy that value and paint over your plane with it. Repeat for all planes that are in the same position as the reference. Then try to eyeball the rest.

And the silhouette is crap, man. Take the image, change levels so that the drawing is completely black and background white, then change it back and tighten it up. Repeat until the completely black version looks acceptable on its own.

I'd like to see some more drastic height differences in the terrain and trees. I know it's probably because you haven't gotten to that yet though. Some atmospheric fog would be a nice touch too but that's also probably something you'd add in later. BTW that's a nice way of mapping out the foreshortening of the leaves before drawing them in. is the face really that manly? wouldnt it work as a bit older womans face? what should i change to make it more feminine, just round some stuff out, or should i change the proportions too?
i guess the defined neck muscles dont help either

Are left and right obviously the same characters at a glance? Is the right not good enough to justify how edgy it is? Are either decent designs in the first place?

yes I know the head on the left is too big and that the perspective in the middle is wrong and the shoulders are off on every sketch of the right one and they're all full of little screwups

>>3266631
The boat is fine, it keeps your eye framed around the girls and adds a needed layer to the background. The scene would look to empty without it. The white and red against the blue moves your eye towards the girls and keeps it there. Seriously check the butt tho, that's the only glaring flaw.

Background boat need atmospheric perspective. The sky is too desaturated for the sea. We don't know yet if it's a sunny day or not. Blonde girl's neck is off.

This looks great. The boat is fine and it helps sell the atmosphere though maybe tone down the red of it. Personally I'd like to see some more boats in the distance.

There's a lot of character here.

>>3266769
thanks for the crit. i find atmospheric haze tough to knock in this early, at least for objects that need it to be subtle -- im going to hold off on that until late stages. gave the sky a slight bump in saturation, but i want to keep it desaturated as a way to help keep the focus on the center girl. the sunny day thing -- yeah that's an issue. probably going to be struggling with the lighting throughout the process.

>>3266766
>Are left and right obviously the same characters at a glance?
at a glance, no, at least not to me, but that middle sketch bridges the gap well. getting a skullgirls vibe from the righthand sketch.

>>3266742
your m8 sounds gr8

>>3266982
thanks! hmm, yeah, the red could stand to be less saturated probably. maybe the atmospheric haze will take care of it. i played around with additional masts and boats in the bg, but couldnt get anything that worked well.

Yeah I agree but she doesn't get changed while she is still into the wolf that doesnt makes any sense.

>> No.3267021

>>3267004
Ok, since you are having trouble rationalizing this. Let me spell it out for you as I imagined it.

Ladies walk into the woods. These ladies are not like normal ladies, they can transform. But what do they do with their clothes??? They leave them where they are. They go off, do their weird transformy things, frolic about and what not and then come back to where they left their clothes, transform back into ladies and get changed. I imagined the process is slow so the ladies have time to throw a shirt on while they're half way out of the critter.

I'm sorry I triggered you anon.

My vision is simply "ladies vomiting out of animals and getting changed while they do it because they're in a bit of a hurry"

>omg she's wearing a shirt while still transforming WTF

I just dont' get this reaction you guys have. It's so weird you're sticking to it. I expect a bit of head scratching when people look at my stuff, because really I make it for myself alone so I know perfectly well what's going on and that's more than good enough for me, but I also expect a viewer to at least try to think rationally about what they're seeing and not get so monumentally hung up on any particular detail.

>>3267023
Why do you keep using the word "forcing?" Maybe you could explain yourself better?

>>3267022
